In the previous issue we discussed what causes heartburn and we have recommended a low-carb diet, to prevent acid reflux. We will now discuss other lifestyle changes and supplements that help prevent heartburn.

lifestyle Changes:

•Reducing your stress levels. Impaired digestion is one of the first symptoms of stress. When your body feels that you’re stressed, it reduces the function of sys-tems that are not vital right now, like the digestive system, and focuses on things that will help it overcome the stressful situation.

•Exercising regularly helps with proper bowel movement, thus reducing the prob-ability of acid reflux.

•Smoking will also effect the digestive tract. Avoiding cigarettes will help re-duce heartburn.

Supplements:

•Chewable DGL is a special form of lico-rice that has been Deglycyrhizinated, which basically means that the part of the licorice that may raise blood-pressure has been removed. Chewing on 1 or 2 lozeng-es before meals, and at intervals through-out the day, is very effective in treating heartburn.

The Degel Machne Ephraim once came to a village and was in need of a place to stay. He was invited by a man who had an open home, and made sure that all his guests feel comfortable. The host complained to the Rebbe that he doesn’t know why he’s always having fires in his home. The Rebbe didn’t respond.

The next morning, the Rebbe left his host after thanking him and wishing him well. He hired a wagon driver to take him to his destination, but the driver didn’t know the directions properly and got lost on the way. The Rebbe was very distressed when he realized that he won’t make it to a Bais Hamedrash in time for davening. He ordered the wagon driver to take him back to his host to clarify the route in which they have to travel.

The host was pleasantly surprised to see the Rebbe return to his home. “What do you do when a guest comes to your home?”

“Why, I serve him food and drink to his heart’s content.”

“What else do you do?” the Rebbe inquired.

“If I see that the man is in need of a donation, I offer him one.”

“Is that all you do?” The host didn’t understand what the Rebbe was getting at. What else is there to do for a guest?

“If you would have walked me out of your home this morning and shown me the way to travel, I would’ve had a Bais Hamedrash when I needed one, and wouldn’t have gotten lost on the way.

After a few minutes of silence, the Rebbe said “Avraham Avinu taught us, – אשל ויטע לויה שתיה ,you fulfilled the first two , ,אכילה but omitted the last one; thereby forming the word fire. Had you fulfilled all three parts of the word, you would’ ve been spared much anguish.
