Tips for Safe Sun Exposure

Yesterday we discussed the many benefits the sun provides for our health. But as you may know, the sun could have potential harmful effects on our wellbeing. So how do we get the health benefits of the sun and yet still avoid the potential harm it may cause?

C o n v e n t i o n a l wisdomThe accepted approach among doctors and dermatologists is that you should never go out in the sun unless you slather yourself in sun screen, as this will protect you from the harmful rays of the sun, right? Wrong!

There are many problems with using sunscreen. For one, it will block all vitamin D-producing ultraviolet B rays, thus causing vitamin D deficiency. But this is not the only problem; sunscreen mainly blocks the UVB rays but will still let through at least some UVA rays. Even those brands that claim to block UVA, do not do so efficiently. According to some experts, being exposed to UVA in the absence of UVB may do more harm than good. You may not get burnt but it may create precancerous changes in the skin cells Hashem yerachaim.

Here are some tips for getting out in the sun without burning or damaging the skin.

1. Take it slowly: our body has its own natural way of dealing with sun exposure, but it takes time to build it up. The more we are in the sun the more our body builds up resistance. So take it one step at a time by starting with a short period of time under the sun and working your way up gradually. Every person has a different tolerance for sun so be alert. The whiter the skin the quicker it is to get burnt. If you get sunburned, you’ll know you overdid it.

2. Moderation: Though our body does build up tolerance, being out for longer periods of time may get you burnt no matter how you go about it, so it’s best to just allow your skin moderate exposure. Again, everyone’s tolerance is different.

If you do plan on being out long than it is best to use sunscreen.

3. A n t i o x i d a n t s : consuming large amounts of antioxidants will help your body’s natural defense mechanism against rays harmful to your skin. It’s a great

idea to take additional vitamin E which is fat soluble, thus helping you keep your cell membranes stable.

Ingredients1 cup water, divided

1 cup unsweetened apple juice

2/3 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled

2 cups strawberry yogurt

1/4 cup sour cream

2 tablespoons milk

Directions:In a large saucepan, combine 3/4 cup water, apple juice, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.

Place strawberries and remaining water in a blender; cover and process until smooth. Pour into apple juice mixture. Stir in yogurt, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until chilled.

Ladle soup into bowls. Combine sour cream and milk; spoon about 2-1/2 teaspoons into the center of each bowl. Using a toothpick, pull mixture out, forming a flower or design of your choice. Yield: 7 servings.
