CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2017 Page 2

Ahoy sailors, Summer is almost over (most places, anyway), even though it is hot and humid here in Southern Florida. It’s almost my favorite time of year, those shoulder sea-sons, when it’s comfortable to eat outside, anchor out on the hook, and generally just

be outside and not broil! The only Club event (besides the Parrothead Cruise 8/18-20 – see the Cruising report) since last Chowder Chatter was the Summer Picnic. Even though we only had something like 4 people signed up the week before the event, people got it in gear and we had 45 picnickers. Which leads me into my first plea: Let’s all try to be a little better at planning! We were almost ready to cancel the picnic due to lack of interest, but last minute, people signed up and it went off wonderfully. Our Liberty Ashore crew have a very tough job and we can help by letting them know if we are going to at-tend an event. They need the numbers of atten-dees to buy the correct amount of food. That also applies with cruises as well. Our cruise leaders may have things planned and need to know numbers. September starts a busy month with two cruises, the South Seas Kayusa Regatta and the Ladies Bridge Club restarting. It’s also a busy month for your Board of Directors, who will have to create a budget for next year and set dues. For those of you who haven’t kept up on the financial end of our Club, we reduced dues a few years ago and have been spending down our reserve to a level of twice our operating budget. We have now gotten to that target number and the Board needs to take a hard look at revenue coming in versus expenditures going out. Unfortunately, our membership num-bers are down and the projected revenue com-ing in fell short by approximately $3,000. So, as you can imagine, that means we will be over budget by that amount at the end of the year. Options available to the Board are to raise the dues, cut the Club subsidizing of events, bring

in new members or perhaps a combination of the 3. You can do your part by doing all you can to bring in new members. What’s important to you? Be sure to let your Board members know. Keep those channels of communication open and enjoy the rest of the “dog days of summer”. Fair winds and following seas

FYI, Moss Marine has backed out of participating in helping our regatta with any kind of slip rental discount so if you have already reserved a slip there, you may want to double check the rate they are charging you. If you haven't reserved yet, please consider doing it with one of our participating mari-nas, the Pink Shell or Salty Sam's. Don't forget to mention

that you are with Summerset. Arrangements are in place for our Skippers Meeting at Bonita Bills on Friday, Cocktail Party at Salty Sam's on Saturday and Awards Dinner at the Diamond Head on Sunday night. The music at Saturday Night's Cocktail Party will be provided by ToucanDo. You may have seen them at Overtime Pizza in Cape Coral or at Bootleggers. I know I really have enjoyed them the few times that I have heard them. You should have received your snail-mail copy of The Race Notice by now. You can either fill it out and send it in or for the first time go to our dedicated Summerset Regatta Website (WWW.SummersetRegatta.com) and do it on line. We are excited to have caught up with technology. You can register as either a Racer or Cruiser, purchase additional Cocktail Party Tickets, Sunday Night Dinner Tickets and/or Re-gatta Apparel.

Wait till you see the beautiful Sailor Bags that

each competing boat will receive at the Skippers Meeting. Our Committee has really made a concerted effort to make this year's 52

nd Annual

Regatta special. I for one will be taking part in the weekend fes-tivities and racing in the Sunday Cruiser's Race. Hope to see you all there. Don't miss our September Summerset Kickoff during our September 19 Membership Meeting at Cape Coral Yacht Club. We will be showing our fabulous Bill Gladstone Video of Summer-set 50, we will have a special 52

nd Summerset

Cake and will be having a contest to see who can come wearing the oldest Summerset T-Shirt. Be there or be square!

The Parrothead Cruise is in the record books. I’m sure Jimmy is sorry he missed it! Thanks to the Blessings for hosting. We’re sorry we missed it as we were in Chicago visiting family. Please look for the highlights in Jean’s article.

There’s more fun coming up.

Next up is the Naples Boat Club

cruise over Labor Day weekend from Septem-

ber 1-4. There could be margaritas at the tiki

bar, great conversations in the pool and maybe

a billiards tournament in the beautiful club

house. Great restaurants are just a stroll away.

Details are in the fliers elsewhere in the Chow-

der Chatter.

Please contact your cruise leaders Bob and Cathy Friedel as soon as possible if you’re inter-ested. Reservations have closed but there could be a cancellation. Or drive down and see us.

After that is the Kayusa Cup Cruise at South Seas from September 15-17. Dan and Debbie Merriman will be your cruise leaders at the fabu-lous South Seas resort. What’s not to like? There are three pools with servers who bring you drinks and food right there and a gorgeous white sandy beach with loungers and umbrellas and sunset celebrations. If you’re feeling really ambitious you can always play a round of golf. Great restaurants and Starbucks are only a trolley ride away. This cruise is in combination with the Kayusa Cup race on Saturday September 16th. Reservations for slips are made directly with South Seas but please let the Merrimans know if you are coming. If you are racing, please register with James Gallagher, Rear Commodore, Racing.

With your feedback from the survey, I am hard at

work planning the Cruising Calendar for 2018. In

October, look for Steve’s next installment detailing

our cruising destination explorations. That’s all

for now. Hope to see you out on the water.

AHOY CMCS members! It’s STILL hot out there! At the August meeting we en-joyed the underwater excursions of our Commodore. Cooled me off just watching all those won-drous undersea creatures. W e l -c o m e aboard

to new members Bobby & Shelley Brooks and their daughter, Sienna. They are now full time Florida residents and Bobby is the Dir. of Operations of Offshore Sail-ing School with "A lifetime of sailing experience in Texas and elsewhere". They are looking to be very active members, checking all the boxes . .!

Meet Us in Margaritaville Cruise Report

CMCS’s sixth annual “Meet Us in Margaritaville” cruise began on August 18th at cocktail hour (hey, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!) Cruisers were welcomed with souvenir margarita glasses filled with that immortal concoction. Friday’s arrivals included Ambi-ance, Chase the Clouds, Jazzy,

Mental Floss, Sail La Vie, Jack B, Salty Dog, and I Sheet U Knot. All settled in at Margarita-ville and got together for Buffett-inspired appe-tizers. All rose to their feet for the national an-them of “Margaritaville.” Some left for dinner, others just hung out.

Saturday morning at 10 AM, the competition be-gan for fabulous prizes! The first event: Flip Flop Flip. Bev Slager out-kicked everyone (including Jim) to win it for Salty Soul. Water Balloon Catch was pretty competitive, with the crew of Chase the Clouds (Bev and Bob Duff) com-i n g i n f i r s t

place. Knees of my Heart Frisbee was our third game, with Rick Eggers and granddaughter Vaeh (Mental Floss) taking home the honors. Our fourth event was the ever popular “Fill the Margarita Glass” which calls upon contestants to be resourceful and inventive, using water from the Gulf to fill margarita

Also joining CMCS is ”Sunny” Sue Cesare who is a retired corporate trainer. She loves traveling all over the world, often sailing adven-tures. She also enjoys kayaking and scuba div-ing, and is also an Artist. Sunny, you will find many similar talents in CMCS.

We have had several guests and folks who have visited us this summer. A CMCS welcome to: Ken Stanley who recently returned from a cruising trip in Greece; Susan Moyer, a former member coming by for a look see at our group again after several years absence. David Boersman is looking for a sailing group, & a sail boat to enjoy SW Florida; and Roger Wood, who is the commander of the SWFL Sailing Singles. If their Email address was on the guest book, they’ve received Applications via attach-ment with the newest Chowder Chatter.

Thank you all members for wearing your CMCS name tags to the meetings and other functions. It is so helpful for us to get to know one another! If you need a new name tag, please advise so we can have one ready for you at our next meeting. The best way to get to know others in the club is to attend the functions we offer throughout the year! I will say that August is our slow, laid back month. Check the Chowder Chatter for the de-tails.

Labor Day Weekend we’re cruising to Naples for our “Gypsies in Paradise” Cruise. The race of the fall season is the Kayusa Cup at South Seas Resort. Check the Chowder Chatter for racing form & cruising information. AND of course we’re all gears ahead for our signature event, the Summerset Regatta in October. Cruisers, Racers and sailors of all sorts, near & far are invited to participate in this event. Look forward to seeing the CMCS burgees fly-ing from your boats!

glasses from 6 feet away. Ambiance (Cathy and Bob Friedel) walked away with a win! Following an afternoon of relaxing and pooling, cruisers met on the dock for 5 O'clock libations, appetizers and dinner, partying in true Buffett

style. Cheeseburgers were served fresh from the grill. We were joined by a number of land cruisers including: Judy and Charles Tomlins, Steve Romain and Cindy Carlino, Pixie and George Noyes, Bill and Mary Misenheimer, new members Bobby & Shelley Brooks, and possible members Hugh & Deb Marlor. Boat guests: Jennifer Hayman with Austin, Carol Beauvois, Stacey Bohannon & her sister-in-law

& BF, Ashley Villanueva. We apologize in ad-vance if we missed someone – quite a crowd to try to take attendance!! Seriously, we were thrilled so many took the time on a hot day to come to ‘Tween Waters! Prizes were awarded for the morning competitions with winners going away with the finest wine $3 can buy. Mark and Carol Beauvois with daughter Jennifer treated us to live music a little later in the evening!

Sunday morning, Jimmy Buffett’s referenced Café du Monde opened with our own Linda Eggers preparing fresh beignets! Mark provided espresso for attendees. A couple of quiches found their way to the buffet and frittatas, too, along with fully loaded deviled eggs. Coffee was served and breakfast shared. It was an incredi-ble spread. Then most boarded their vessels and headed home to their own Particular Harbor to await next year’s festivities. Remember: We are the People our parents warned us about! Gary and Jean Blessing

Meet Us in Margaritaville Cruise Report

Greetings Y’all! Well, I think we had a great time at the CMCS Sum-mer Picnic at the Yacht Club on July 29! We had about 45 atten-dees, and a hot but su-per sunny and windy day. Perfect crowd and

weather for the Pavilion! Bill Cook, George Noyes and David Naumann did a brilliant job as Grill Masters, and provided us with juicy Italian sausages and cheeseburg-ers. Along with the meat, we had grilled onions and peppers courtesy of Pixie Noyes for garnish on the sau-sages, and all sorts of other accou-t r e m e n t s courtesy of CMCS for garnish on the burgers. M e m b e r s did a great job of providing appetizers, sides and desserts. For certain, nobody went home hungry that day!

GYPSEAS IN PARADISE CRUISE

September 1-4, 2017

Bob Friedel is now taking reservations for the cruise to Naples Boat Club over the Labor Day weekend—September 1-5. But this year we will forgo the hurricane threats and arrive on Friday. According to the dock master slips will be more lim-ited this year, currently 8 available. So sign up early to make sure you get in!. The time and date of your email will determine the order of selection. Naples Boat Club is on the Gordon River about a half mile north of Naples city Dock. The marina is very nice with a pool, poolside tiki bar (where there will be complimentary frozen concoctions for your enjoyment), a very nice clubroom, show-ers and walking distance to Tin City and downtown. Slips are $2.25/ft/night + $10/night electric. To sign up for this cruise, please provide your name, boat name, length, beam, draft and a credit card number. This is to hold your slip. You will not be charged until you check in at the dock. Also indicate the number of nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, etc.). This has been a popular cruise so don’t delay in signing up. FYI: Most slips have a 50 amp electric service and splitters may not be available so bring a splitter if you need 30 amp service. For further information either email or call Bob Friedel (239)984-2118 or [email protected] Please use the on-line registration on the CMCS website.

The Kayusa Cup/South Seas Cruise is coming up on September 15th to the 17th. Dan and Debbie Merriman on Air Boss will be the cruise leaders. All those cruising can join us on the dock on Friday at 5 pm. Bring cock-tails and appetizers. Dining will be on your own and South Seas has gas grills available for our use. The racers will be offshore on Saturday while the cruisers already there will be watching from the beach or poolside. We'll get together at the marina side BBQ area at 5 pm, after the racers have finished. Bring your favorite libation and snacks to share. For dinner there are many great restaurants nearby. Many boats may leave Sunday, but some will be relaxing around the pool and departing on Monday. We'll figure out cocktails depending on who is staying. Reservations at South Seas Marina must be made on your own. Contact Charles Martz at 888-777-3625. Our group rate is $2.35/ft and $10/day for 30 amp and $15/day for 50 amp electricity. It's never too early to reserve a slip and the deadline will be the middle of August. This is a great way to enjoy all that South Seas has to offer. Please let Dan & Debbie know who will be joining them after you make your reserva-tion. Dan & Debbie Merriman [email protected]
