The District Governor
Lion Biddy Weel is our District governor and she, along
with her partner Lion Nick, came to see us. Always an
honour.
DG Biddy has a personal motto, ‘It’s The Little Things’,
that was shared with our club. DG Biddy practices what
she says on a regular basis. On visits to her local town
shop, nearby Timboon, DG Biddy begins by saying
“HELLO” to all and gives a ‘Big SMILE’. When you see DG
Biddy smile you will understand that you can feel and
see the love behind that smile. I did!
DG Biddy took that smile around to farmers after the St
Patricks Day fires. She also took a large Lion’s Cake and
a petrol voucher. Lions of V2 district have raised in ex-
cess of $40K for relief for the fire affected farmers, and
counting. The same Lions have also no forgotten the
drought affected farmers and raised $11K so far.
DG Biddy spoke of our International President (IP), Gud-
run Ynguadottis of Iceland, and her motto “Never Give
Up”. Somehow I think after listening to DG Biddy that
the IP’s motto was not something new.
The fact that a citizen of Iceland became a Lions IP is
testament to the truth of her mot-
to.
DG Biddy spoke plain talk and
clearly with great honesty. Such
talk connected to the hearts and
minds of all gathered on the night.

Here's this month’s contribution. I WAS going to write about Melvin Jones, but as I read about him, with the attention span of a mosquito, I became distracted and got fixated on his star sign: CAPRICORN, the noble and steadfast GOAT. It doesn't sur-prise me that our illustrious founder is a Capricorn, so I thought I'd find out how many more of these Goats were “famous”. I found at least 250. Spooky how ONE star sign can produce such a DIVERSE group of individuals. Google them if you don't know who they are. I find this absolutely fascinating. Here's my RANDOM list:

Ocean Mind
Sometimes the dots look random until they just con-
nect up.
Not that long ago this club gave $500 to a group
of Geelong Grammar students who were fund
raising for an organisation called, ’Ocean Mind’.
Lions Cub Tywren had been on a Bethany
waiting list for a surfing program for quite some
time.
Out of the blue we were called to be told that
Lion cub Tywren had now made it onto the list of
participants and that a worker would come and
interview us and Tywren.
The program, we were told, was Ocean Mind!
Well when a club does some good. As we did with the
sponsorship it is nice to know that someone we know
well becomes a beneficiary.
It have been some weeks now and Ocean Mind is all
that it said it is, and more.
Additionally the CEO Rachele is going to make a great
‘Guest Speaker’. A very smart and insightful CEO,
great communicator, and a genuine ‘Surfie Chick’, to
use an old fashioned and politically incorrect term,
Drives the modern equivalent of a combi, a VW Trans-
porter, decked out well. It will be good to hear how
our Lions money is helping.
Australian International Airshows & Lions
Next year, 2019, the Australian International
Airshow returns to Avalon. This means that
this club has the privilege to run the carparking
for that event, under the guidance of our own
Lion Les Cropley.
By any measure a massive undertaking. Howev-
er what many may not know is that there is also
the Australian International Aerospace Exposi-
tion, 26th February– 3rd March, held on the
Avalon site. The business side of the Airshow.
Airshows have tasked our club to assist in
setting up the carparking site and providing per-
sonnel for the carparking on all the days of both
events. At a rough guess that is about 200 shifts.
To do that we invite all the Lions of the region
to assist along with any other clubs and organi-
sations we partner with over the year. This is a
MAJOR fund raiser for all. Clearly the 1st-3rd
March public days are the big ones for volun-
teer numbers.
For the volunteers you get to see the flying dis-
plays up close. Come join us.
Lions Hearing Dogs
Australian Lions Hearing Dogs was conceived in 1980 when two past District Governors Bob Allen and Brian Carter attending an International Convention in the USA discovered the Hearing Dogs in Colorado. At the Multiple District Convention in Canberra the Lions Club of Australia voted to fund this project.
A property was acquired at Verdun in the Adelaide Hills. Gale Gould from the American program came out for two years to start the project.
Since the program’s inception hearing dogs have been delivered to deaf and hard of hearing people nationwide
as a gift from the Lions Clubs of Australia. Currently there are Australian Lions Hearing Dogs assisting their own-
ers in every State and Territory in Australia.

A World of Lions Recently the 201V2 District Governor
Biddy Weel visited our club and it turns out Diabetes or specifi-
cally ‘Juvenile’ was a pet program for ‘DG Biddy’.
Diabetes is a growing world epidemic. Currently, 1 in 2 (46.5%) of adults with diabetes are undiagnosed. The pur-
pose of diabetes screening is to identify asymptomatic individuals who may have diabetes and not know it, and
refer them to qualified healthcare professionals for additional assessment. A diabetes screening can help de-
tect prediabetes as well as diabetes.
Diabetes Chairpersons serve at the district and multiple district levels and are appointed by the district governor
or council chairperson, respectively. Diabetes Chairpersons support Lions and Leos engaged or interested in pro-
jects to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the quality of life for those diagnosed. They may collabo-
rate with leadership throughout the organization, including the Global Service Team (GST).
Our Club Could Organise a Diabetes Screening by:
Partnering with healthcare professionals to carry out screening events: Government
health departments, universities, hospitals, nurses, certified diabetes educators or private physi-
cians often agree to perform free or low cost
public screenings. They are knowledgeable
about local healthcare laws and appropriate
medical screening equipment and supplies to
be used.
Everything is changing. People are taking the comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke. Will Rogers
Diabetes is a disease in which the body either does not produce
or does not properly use insulin. Diabetes can lead to serious health
complications and premature death. The number of people with dia-
betes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 and
continues to rise, according to the World Health Organization
(WHO). The WHO also projects that diabetes will be the seventh leading cause of death in 2030.
Why the Fight Against Diabetes Is One of Our Global Causes
Diabetes is one of the most pervasive and fastest-growing diseases in the world today. It affects people of
all races, income levels, and ages—even children.
Lions Clubs International Foundation is responding to this global epidemic by committing to help prevent
diabetes and improve quality of life for those who have been diagnosed through multi-faceted, comprehen-
sive health initiatives.
Managing diabetes is easier when family members understand the condition and how to monitor and treat it.
Strength in Numbers
We're partnering with the International Diabetes Federation to take on diabetes. Join us in the global effort.

The question is: What can our club do to help?
By, Tha Lay Paw
My neighbour and best friend in the Thai refu-gee camp was an old lady. She was 73 and just like my real grandma, scary, happy, but never sad. We always joked with each other.
Around my house I planted roses and jasmine, she planted just jasmine. She lived with her daughter and granddaughter who was my age. Every day she scolded her granddaughter, but her granddaughter just put earphones into her ears and listened to music.
I asked her granddaughter, “Why does your grandma scold you every day?”
“My grandma is very annoying. She never understands me, in her eyes I am just naughty. She says everything I’m doing is wrong. When I ask my mum to help me speak to grandma, she says ‘your grandma is very old now, you need to understand her’. My grandma is very annoying.”
She said her grandma was very annoying and I thought maybe she was right. If I was her I would feel the same.
Next day her grandma came to my house and asked me, “Do you think I am an annoying person?”
Continued over
I realised she heard what her granddaughter said behind her back.
“Sometimes, but you should try to understand your granddaughter. She is a young person, I understand her because I am young too.”
“Yes she is young, that is why I have to scold her every day. Everything I am doing is just for her and I want her to know it’s because I love her and worry about her.”
Her face was worried. “I want to see that she can do everything by herself. I can’t live with her all her life. Before I go I want to see she can be independent and can look after her mum. She will never understand old people like me.”
Tears were now falling down her face. It was the first time I ever saw her cry. I understood in that moment what she felt and the meaning of her scolding.
She asked me, “Why did you plant roses and not just jasmine?”
“Well, you see, jasmine has a good strong smell and roses are beautiful and the smell is not too strong. When I’m angry the smell of roses calms me down.”
Then she smiled at me. I felt her love and kindness. In that moment I understood that old people love their grandchildren more than they love themselves.
From time to time issues arise in a members life that mean the juggling of life and Lions becomes impossible to
manage. Lion International made allowances for those situations.
Sometimes it is work and career that gets in the way of a members intentions to serve their community. Other
times it can be; health family or other personal issues. Whatever the issue Lion, and our club in particular, do not
want to be in the way of a solution to those issues,
A Lion who has an issue can apply to their club board of management to become ‘A Lion At Large’. This is a pro-
cess where you step away from all Lions duties and do not attend meetings for a period of up to six (6) months.
Lions often find that in those six (6) months they have gotten on top of their issues and return to the club. A
good outcome. Some Lions have felt that they cannot see themselves coming to Lions for an extended period
and choose to resign. Many times that Lion solves their issue within a year and wishes to return to Lions. They
will be welcomed back to Lions without loosing their continuity of service to Lions. Some other Lions have been
transferred in their careers interstate or overseas. Lions can organise a transfer to a new club. Some find their
new position means they just can’t do Lions for years. However when things, in their life, settle down they will be
welcome to join a Lions club wherever they are. Lions don’t just look after the community, they look after each!

Important — The Royal Geelong Show
Each year, for 20 years, this club has managed the gates at the Royal Geelong Show. Seven (7)
major and two (2) minor gates over four (4) days is a large task.
Each year it is a close call on whether we will have enough people to staff all the gates. 2018 is no
different. So if you belong to a group and that group can provide some volunteers to assist, your
group will be paid for their efforts. All you need to do is e-mail our club secretary Elaine:
[email protected] or call 0408 371 249. All gate staff must be 18+ years of age.
The shifts do not exceed four (4) hours. Training will be provided and the very experienced Corio
Bay Lions members will manage the process with you.
The money is good and for a volunteer group a great bonus for their funds!
Recently the Geelong Red Cross Emergency Services team decided to engage with the community in the area of Emergency Preparation. To do that the team formed a partnership with the Regions SES Community Engage-ment Team. Together, Red Cross and the State Emergency Service (SES) , will make Emergency Preparation
Presentations (EPP) to a wide range of community groups.
The EPP include some serious information, some amazing videos and a fun activity with a twist. Red Cross has a
publication called ‘RediPlan’ which across the emergency service community is the ‘GO TO’ book. The EPP is
based around this book and all participants will receive a copy along with other vital information hand out from both the Red Cross and SES.
The SES Regional and Red Cross Regional teams have jointly developed this EPP to make their communities a
safer place when an emergency or disaster occurs.
If you are a member of any sort of community group or know members of a community group you need to ac-
tively encourage them to book an EPP. Most groups or organisations like to have community speakers and visit
from this team will educate and delight the members.
The EPP’s will begin in the second half of October 2018 and continue until all groups and or
organisation have been visited.
To have a Emergency Preparation Presentation in the Geelong area it is as simple as:
Calling 0429 402 639 or
emailing: [email protected]
Your Local ‘Divisional Operations Officer (Red Cross) , Elaine Anderson, and ask for a EPP.
