Dear Members,

We the editorial team have enjoyed bringing you Oarspeak. Hopefully you have enjoyed reading it.

The October issue carried an interesting article from a senior member recalling his days when he rowed for Gordon Woodroffe. It would be nice if some more senior members shared their experiences with us. All these writings make a record for the club and would inspire the young ones in time to come.

The younger rowers who have taken part in the various regattas at home and away could share some pics and their memorable experiences at some of these regattas. It would also be a good record for the future.

Happy to have had a a historical write up from Nandan Kaushik a plus twelve student in our last issue. This should inspire other young students to come forward and get their contributions published.

We hopefully look forward to increasing the number of pages with more relevant content and towards this end we need your active cooperation.

Your suggestions on what topics you may like to see covered by Oarspeak even if you do not write on it yourself are welcome. We could look at sourcing these topics. This would make the magazine more aligned to it’s readership.

Our sincere thanks to all those who readily contribute again and again without hesitation and would request them to please keep coming forward as your contributions make the magazine!

Looking forward to your involvement!

Warm Regards,

Ted Thadani

Dear Members,

We write further to the communication dated 17th November 2018 to members.

We start with a quick review of happenings in the last fortnight: The Millennium Regatta between MBC and Calcutta Rowing Club (CRC) was held on 17th November 2018. The Regatta was well attended by members of the Club. We are happy to inform you that the MBC crews won the Overall Championship.

The Chief Guest for the Regatta was Mr. S. Mahalingam, Chairman of City Union Bank and former CFO of Tata Consultancy Services. The Boat named after City Union Bank was also launched on that day after a brief ceremony.

Our Bar Nite and Regatta Nite on 17th November 2018 were a big hit and resulted in record sales in both Bar and Catering. Due to popular demand, the same DJ of Millennium Regatta Nite was invited to perform on November 24th, 2018, which was also well received by members and their guests.

We have taken necessary steps to reduce input costs. Mr. Srinivasan, the Catering Member-In-Charge, has streamlined the purchase process and a new Store Keeper has taken over maintenance of Stores. Few key changes to staff deployment have been made and we hope that such moves will help the Club usher in better efficiency and service.

As for the fortnight ahead, you would have received by now the Notice calling for the EGM on 10th December 2018, seeking Approval from the General Body for the Management Committee to continue in Office till the end of its regular term, until July 2019. The EGM has become necessary on account of recent resignations of key office bearers. In their place, the Committee has co-opted Directors as per the Articles of Association of the Club and the Committee has been discharging its duties and managing the Club effectively.

Members with any queries on the Club Management may seek answers directly from the Committee in the EGM. We will respond to your concerns, clear misconceptions if any, and share our plans for a brighter future.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Extraordinary General Meeting on Monday, December 10th, 2018 at 6.30 PM, and welcome your participation in the referendum.

It was in 1923 that the Justice Party put out a plan to create a housing

colony, the ‘Mambalam Housing Colony’, to deal with Madras's population explosion. However, it was only in the ‘30s that the idea was implemented, and the scheme went ahead. Finally, the colony was ready in ‘40s. The only downside to this grand scheme was that the land was created by filling up the Long Tank.

Long Tank was a natural waterbody that defined the Western limit of Madras, from the first ever map, drawn in 1814. In fact, the western limits of the tank are left unmarked in that map, as they are considered outside the city! According to the Madras Tercentenary Volume, the Western limit of the Choultry Plain was the Mylapore (or Long) Tank in the West, in 1721 itself.Long Tank was mostly used to denote the Mylapore tank to the South. However, the

Nandan Sankriti Kaushik is a class 12 student of humanities at Sishya. He loves writing as well as history, especially local history. He volunteers in his spare time, at the 200 year old Madras Literary Society library, on College Road. He is the son of Kaveri Bharath (PC 101), and the grandson of former MBC President and Treasurer, the late V. J. Bharath.

name was also applicable to both the Mylapore as well as the Nungambakkam tanks, (to the north), taken together.

During the Siege of Madras in 1761, Major Lawrence, defending Madras, cut the bund of the tank, inundating Mount Road, or ‘the cart track’, as it was referred to, then.

In 1786, Fourbeck, a British civil servant, left money to the city of Madras, to build a bridge over the Mambalam Canal, a feeder from the Long Tank to the Adayar River in Nandanam.

In 1798, a map drawn of the environs of Madras is confirmed by the Governor who writes that the Western limit of the city will be the Long Tank.

The banks of the Tank were abundant with ‘gardens’ and ‘choultries’ as they were called.

The Madras Boat Club used to hold regattas in the Long Tank when it was full. Throughout the late 19th century, races were held here. The first mention of competitive rowing was in 1875, with scratch fours. Then in 1884, on a half mile long course, a race was held. In 1893, the race is recorded to have been held, ”from Cathedral corner to Sydapet”. The first temporary boathouse was constructed in 1896, and a permanent one in 1899. It was said that all the who’s who of Madras were seen at these races. Races continued till 1904, when the club put down roots in Adayar. Finally any rowing activity in the Tank stopped in the 1920s, when they started filling in the Tank with soil and rubble, to create today's T Nagar.

The problems of population growth had troubled the Madras rulers for quite a few years, and finally the Justice Party, (in power at the time), decided that housing was more important than ecology. That decision lost the city 6 km of a water body. Some argue that this was necessary at the time. Others argue that if it had been maintained, and another solution found, our water problem could have been averted. But the fact is, Long Tank is nowhere to be seen.

The Long Tank first lost 1600 acres, that went to the Mambalam housing scheme. In 1941, Lake Area was formed. The Loyola campus then took in 54 acres. Over the years, various adjoining

localities, and institutions, including PSBB in 1958, were built over the lake. Finally, the last remnants were eaten up by Valluvar Kottam in 1974.

Names are the only things that remember the tank. Lake View Road, Lake Area, Tank Bund Road, Erikarai Marriamman - all of these denote things that were once linked to the Long Tank. Another piece of the Tank that survives is the Fourbeck memorial, in Nandanam, on Mount Road. It stands inside a compound, to the west of the road, more or less forgotten, while the Mambalam Canal continues to flow on, under the bridge he built.

So next time you go to Usman Road for some shopping, or admire the layout of T Nagar, or complain about it always being flooded during the rains, remember what was there, and what we lost.

The MBC AfTon WATer

The MBC AfTon WATer Polo TournAMenT 2018This year’s MBC Water Polo Tournament was full of surprise finishes. This edition had MBC Teams A & B along with Madras Cricket Club (MCC), Gymkhana Club and Anna Alumni Club. Unfortunately RMYC had to pull out at the last minute due to player injuries. The teams were formed into 2 groups and the top 2 teams in each group were set to play the semi finals and move on to the finals. Group A had MBC A, MCC, and Alumni Club and Group B had MBC B and Gymkhana. The Group matches saw some teams making a strong start.

MATCh – 1 : MBC-A vs MCC MBC-A and MCC kicked off the show with the first match. They were

considered to be well balanced teams but the match turned out to be totally one sided. MBC-A beat MCC 5 – 0. Philip James was at his best, scoring three goals and Chandramouli and Sharan scoring one each.

MATCh – 2 : MBC-B vs GyMkhAnALast year winners took on MBC-B in the second match. Gymkhana played up to their reputation by beating MBC-B 3 – 1. For Gymkhana, Aravind scored 2 and Rajesh 1 goal. The surprise package came in the form of Hans of MBC-B who scored 1 goal.

MATCh – 3 : MBC (A) vs AluMni CluBThe debut match of Alumni saw MBC-A beating Alumni 3 – 0. Siddharth of MBC

was on a roll, scoring all 3 goals.

MATCh – 4 : MCC vs AluMni CluBThe 3 As of MCC Abhishek , Agnishwar, and Arjun were at their best scoring 3 , 1 , 1 goals each! Sadly for Alumni Club they were unable to make a dent on the scoreboard in their second match. The damage would have been more if not for some acrobatic goalkeeping by Alumni Club’s Jagdish.

seMi finAl – 1 : MBC-A vs MBC-B The game moved on to the knockout stage. Hans of MBC-B surprised everyone by scoring the 1st goal and taking the lead in the 1st half. Under pressure Chandramouli of MBC-A scored a brilliant equaliser. The match

was evenly poised and towards the end an unstoppable Hans scored his 2nd goal and took his team to the finals by eliminating the favourites MBC-A. It was a gripping match with lots of twists and MBC-B played brilliantly.

seMi finAl – 2 : MCC vs GyMkhAnA CluBYet another tournament favourite, Gymkhana was in for a surprise. MCC regrouped well and played as a team with good passes and Abhishek again scored 2 goals along with Agnishwar (1 goal) to comprehensively beat Gymkhana 3 – 0.

finAl : MBC-B vs MCCIt was remarkable final for both the teams made it to the finals after losing their 1st match very badly. Since both teams were under pressure they changed strategies by making their defence strong. It was a well-fought final with Abhishek of MCC scoring 1 goal to beat MBC-B and lift the MBC Afton Water Polo Trophy 2018.

Congratulations to the winners, MCC!
