May 2017

Dear 4-H Families: It’s that time of year! One of the most exciting, busiest times in 4-H is sum-

mer, and that means fairs, achievement days, and camps! This issue will

focus on the upcoming Lawrence County Youth Fair and Achievement Day

activities!

For Lawrence County 4-H members, our Achievement Day will also be held

during the Lawrence County Youth Fair. A schedule is enclosed with the

newsletter for your information. All members are encouraged to bring pro-

ject exhibits, participate in member judging, personal appearance, fashion

revue, public speaking and demonstrations. This is your time to shine!

You will also want to check out the information in the fair book on the

Brownfield/KRMO LCYF Gold Buckle Award! Now in it’s fifth year, this

award will recognize one boy and one girl based upon a point system. The

highest point categories are in public speaking and demonstrations, so con-

sider adding one or more of these events to your plans.

Why is participation in the county fair and achievement day so important?

The fair and achievement day, along with completing a report form, are real-

ly the completion steps for the 4-H year. The fair gives you an opportunity

to share what you have learned this past year in 4-H, and to earn the oppor-

tunity to compete at regional and state events. How often have we gone

through some kind of program, but never really stopped to consider just

what all we have learned? The fair and achievement day give us all an op-

portunity to reflect on our year and see where we want our 4-H career to go

from here. We use conference style judging in Lawrence County, which

simply means our 4-H members sit down with the judge and discuss the

exhibit item.

For those that live outside the county and are not members of Lawrence County 4-H,

the fair livestock shows are open to 4-H members from other counties.

Camp registrations are due May 15, and it will be a blast this year! A few scholar-

ships are available for those wanting to attend camp but not able to pay the full fee.

Contact me for more details.

As always, if you have questions about anything, please don’t hesitate to call, text or

email. My goal is to help each and every member and volunteer be successful in the

4-H program.

Silent Auction Fund-Raiser Lawrence County 4-H Council will hold their silent auc-

tion fund-raiser during the fair again this year. Each

club is asked to bring baskets that have a total value of

$100, so that could be one $100 basket, 2 $50 baskets, etc.

This is one of our two major fund raisers each year. Pro-

ceeds go toward Recognition Day awards and other

county activities. Bring your basket on Friday, along

with the list of items and an estimated value. We had

such a great response to the auction being down at the

Wright Pavilion last year, we will be doing that again

this year! Last year’s silent auction raised nearly $1000—

Let’s see if we can make 2017 the best silent auction to

date!!

Sportfishing State Event The Missouri 4-H State Sportfishing event will be held Satur-

day, June 3rd , 2017 in Mid-Missouri. The event is open to all 4

-H members enrolled in the sportfishing project (if a member

is not enrolled in the project they will not see the event in

4HOnline when it opens). Event registration for youth will

take place in 4HOnline and will open April 1 and close May

15. This event is generously supported by Missouri Depart-

ment of Conservation and Bass Pro Shops. Cost of the event

is $20 per member (additional cost for family members who

want us to provide lunch rather than bring it). More infor-

mation about the 4-H sportfishing project can be found at:

http://4h.missouri.edu/go/projects/sportfishing/

4-H Move Across Missouri (MOVE) MOVE is back for 2017! And, youth and adults can register for it on 4HOnline!! Enrollment for new and re-enrollment for current

MOVErs begins now and continues until May 1 (please make sure to register by May 1 so you can participate in the competition!). As

you know, MOVE promotes physical activity and encourages youths to engage in a broad range of activities such as walking, biking,

running, swimming, dance, taekwondo, gardening and more. Here’s what youth and adults need to do to participate: Enroll in the

Move Across Missouri (MOVE) project (HF775) in 4HOnline in their profile. Enrollment in 4-H MOVE does not count as a part of

county limits on projects. Using a paper tracking system found on the 4-H website at: http://4h.missouri.edu/4hmove/moveinfo, youth

and their families can “log” the number of minutes they accumulate throughout the year and during the competitive component of the

MOVE program (scroll to the bottom of the website page and click “My Move Activity Log”). Record keeping through the paper

tracking system is important because the competition period will be from February 1 to April 30. Youth and families will submit their

total number of minutes logged and activities throughout the 12-week competitive period between May 1 - 15 in 4HOnline. 4-Hers

and adults can register for the competitive event as individuals and/or as part of a team. MOVE awards will be provided.

Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share, and work

in groups, explore their interests, and build self-confidence. Each Clover

Kids Corner provides an activity, information or other materials that Clover

Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing experiences that intro-

duce five to seven-year olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing.

Mother’s Day Tote Bags Transfer the following poem onto computer t-shirt transfers. Iron the poem onto a canvas tote bag. Have children place their hands in fab-ric paint and make handprints on the bags for a very personal Moth-er’s day gift! I know you get discouraged Because I am so small And always leave my fingerprints On furniture and walls But every day I’m growing I’ll be all grown up someday These tiny fingerprints Will surely fade away So here’s a final handprint Just so you can recall Exactly how my fingers looked When I was very small!
