Opportunity in the Cloud: What Are We Waiting For?FeaTuRed PResenTeR: Kenneth C. Green, Founding Director, The Campus Computing Project

modeRaToR: Ronald L. Danielson, Vice Provost for Information Services and CIO, Santa Clara University

Campus IT leaders have been discussing cloud strategies for years. But cloud adoption in higher education has been slow, save for the movement to cloud-based e-mail. Referencing the latest data from the 2012 Campus Computing Survey (http://www.campuscomputing.net/item/campus-computing-2012-mixed-assessments-it-effectiveness), Kenneth C. Green offers a look at where we are today in leveraging cloud strategies and applications. Where are the clouds? And what issues impede campus efforts to move resources and services to the cloud?

session 2: 2:00 Pm - 2:45 Pm

Cloud Implementation StrategiesPanelisTs: Joy Hatch, Vice Chancellor, Information Technology Services, Virginia Community College System; Matt Lawson, Director, Enterprise Services, Virginia Community College System

modeRaToR: Ronald L. Danielson, Vice Provost for Information Services and CIO, Santa Clara University

What are the implementation issues institutions should be aware of when approaching the cloud? Will you chose a hybrid implementation or move services fully to the cloud? Are you defining a private, community, or public cloud infrastructure? What aspects of campus culture should concern you as you introduce new, cloud-based services? Here, a team from a very large state community college system shares its strategies.

session 3: 3:30 Pm - 4:15 Pm

Cloud Security IssuessPeakeR: David Escalante, Director of Computer Policy & Security, Boston College

modeRaToR: Ronald L. Danielson, Vice Provost for Information Services and CIO, Santa Clara University

Security issues may be holding back many institutions considering a cloud implementation. But these are less often technical issues and more often security-related questions about institutional policy, implementation strategies, governance and contractual/legal issues. Here, we’ll look at the range of security concerns IT leaders need to address when approaching cloud implementations and we’ll consider the future of the cloud—not only for possible “answers” to questions about security in the cloud, but also for ways that cloud implementations may break new ground in offering institutions a more secure operating environment in line with the myriad changes coming to our institutions and communities.

session 4: 4:30 Pm - 5:15 Pm

Future Visions of the CloudPanelisTs: David W. Dodd, Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, Stevens Institute of Technology; Mary S. Wheeler, Assistant Vice President for Finance, Stevens Institute of Technology

modeRaToR: Ronald L. Danielson, Vice Provost for Information Services and CIO, Santa Clara University

Higher education has been slow to enter into the cloud, in many application areas. But there is no lack of visionary thinking and some institutions are leading the way with implementations in areas that have not been well traveled in the cloud—areas like financials and other administrative systems. So while it’s still very early for most higher education institutions to consider putting major administrative applications in the cloud, a few visionaries have been leading the way. Here, Kuali serves as an exemplar of this kind of vision as leaders from Stevens Institute of Technology discuss their instance of the Kuali Financial System, fully in the cloud.
