A unique country house, once the gatehouse of an Elizabethan mansion, forming the west wing of Dingley Hall

The Property Dingley Hall is an exceptional Listed Grade I

country house of which The Cloisters is the

oldest part dating from around 1560. The

Cloisters was once the gatehouse to an

Elizabethan mansion. During this time many

monarchs visited including Queen Elizabeth I

and James I. The Elizabethan mansion was

demolished to make way for a Palladian

mansion, designed by William Wilde, in the

1680s. Later used as the chapel, The Cloisters

and the rest of the hall fell into disrepair

during the 1960s and 1970s, but was saved by

the architect Kit Martin, who restored the

building and converted it into houses and

apartments. The Cloisters has been updated

by the present owner, during past eleven

years, with works including a well fitted

modern kitchen and a refitted shower room

for the principal bedroom.

The Accommodation The front door from The Cloisters leads to an

entrance lobby with a spiral staircase which

rises to the dining room on the first floor.

This room has a fine 16th century moulded

mantelpiece and a chestnut boarded floor.

The room opens to the kitchen, which has

been refurbished by the present owner with

elegant fittings and appliances including an

induction hob with extractor above, a

combined microwave and oven, a further oven

and concealed fridge/freezer and dishwasher. The living room is reached from the dining room

and has a fireplace fitted with a wood burning

stove and extensive fitted bookshelves. In the

corner is a spiral staircase rising from ground

level to the second floor roof terrace. This

staircase also doubles as a wine store.

A further spiral staircase descends to the ground

floor bedrooms and another staircase rises to the

second floor.

The second floor landing has a glass wall and

door to a large stone paved roof terrace which

gives wonderful views of the garden, grounds

and miles of open countryside to the north, west

and south. Off the second floor landing is the

principal bedroom of large proportions with

double French doors to a second stone paved

roof terrace. Sliding doors conceal shelving,

hanging space and drawers. Off this bedroom is

a refitted en suite shower room within a turret,

with hand basin, WC, bidet and large shower.

The study/bedroom 4, also within a turret, is

reached off the second floor landing.

On the ground floor and accessed either from

the spiral staircase from the living room or from

a door to the garden terrace is a corridor, with

linen cupboard, which leads to bedroom two

with a beamed ceiling and to bedroom three,

another double.

A bathroom, serving bedrooms two and three,

has a bath with shower over, an inset hand basin

and a WC.

Garden This is a particular feature of the property and

the private garden lies immediately to the

south of The Cloisters. On the south side is a

large and private, stone paved terrace on two

levels flanked by a lily pond and a rock garden

in the Japanese style. Stone steps rise up to a

broad stone path edged by roses, a large lawn

to the west with a long fuschia border and two

magnificent copper beech trees.

The property also enjoys the use of extensive

communal gardens with a heated swimming

pool, woodland and further lawned areas.

Location Dingley Hall stands on the top of a hill with

far reaching views to the north and west over

open countryside. The village is little more

than a hamlet with its church in the grounds

of The Hall. Market Harborough, which is

conveniently close, has good local shopping as

well as a station with non-stop trains to

London St Pancras. The property is well

placed to reach Leicester, Oxford, Cambridge,

Stratford on Avon and Birmingham in under

one hour by car. The A14 which links the A1

to the M1 and M6 lies about seven miles to

the south. The property is well placed for

private schools including the preparatory

schools at Maidwell Hall and Spratton Hall and

the public schools at Uppingham, Oakham,

Oundle and Rugby
