The Cleft-Craniofacial Center at Albany Med is led by Courtney Carpenter, MD. A fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Carpenter specializes in craniofacial surgery and is specially trained in microsurgery and pediatric plastic surgery.
Dr. Carpenter completed fellowships in microsurgery and craniofacial surgery at Albany Med and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, respectively. She completed her residency in plastic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center and received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dually accredited by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA), patients receive all the care they need in one place, from a team of Albany Med providers and community-based experts.
Specialists in disciplines that include plastic surgery, orthodontics, otolaryngology (ENT), dentistry, genetics, neurosurgery, nutrition, psychology, child life and speech language pathology expertly treat the full spectrum of cleft and craniofacial conditions, from birth to adulthood.

Aidan—Cleft lip & palate
Ryder—Craniosynostosis
Abnormal head Shape/plagiocephaly – flat areas on head
Alveolar defect (bone grafting) – bony gap in the gumline/ridge that contain the sockets of the teeth
Brachial plexus reconstruction – nerve injury resulting from birth or other trauma
Burn reconstruction
Cleft lip – an opening in the upper lip
Cleft palate – an opening between the mouth and nose
Congenital hand and foot anomalies reconstruction – Duplications, polydactyly (more than 5 fingers or toes), syndactyly (fused fingers or toes)
Craniosynostosis – one or more skull sutures close too early
Reconstruction techniques include Endoscopic, Open reconstruction, Posterior Vault Distraction, etc.
Dermoid cysts and other facial lesions or masses
Ear malformations – small ears (microtia), deformed ears, protruding ears, etc.
Reconstruction techniques include ear molding (no surgery) or otoplasty (surgery)
Facial asymmetry or facial paralysis
Facial trauma and reconstruction
Hemifacial microsomia – asymmetric growth of one side of the face
Jaw deformities – Micrognathia (small), retrognathia (posterior position), malocclusion (abnormal bite)
Reconstruction techniques include upper and lower jaw surgery, mandibular Distraction, etc.
Nasal reconstruction (rhinoplasty) – for arrhinia-absent nose, cleft deformity, etc.
Pigmented or vascular lesions – Congenital nevi, port wine stain, hemangioma, vascular malformations
Reconstruction after different types of trauma
Scar revision
Submucous cleft – cleft covered by mucous membrane of the roof of mouth
Syndromes and other conditions that impact craniofacial development
Torticollis – Tight neck muscle, head turns to one side
Velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) and speech disorders (congenital and acquired)
