Digitization of Slides: AimsStop deterioration of collection due to time

(pink slides, etc)Allow use of visual material through newer

technologies (ex. Powerpoint).Make images available for teaching to all

with disabilities (ex. Visual impairments).Eventually create a resource for teaching

and learning available to the public.

Digitization of Slides: ResultsSome 6,000 slides digitized until now.

Roman Architecture (Part 2 course, 25 students) taught through Powerpoint.

Hellenistic World: Art and Culture (Part 2 course, 10 students) taught through Powerpoint.

Heaven, Hell and the Bit in Between (Part 1 course, 40 students) taught through Powerpoint.

All images for these courses made available to students via the P:Drive for use in essays and study.

Considerable reduction of photocopy costs.

Digitization of slides: The Future

• Complete digitization of Departmental collection by July 2009.

• Enter into digitization project with British Institute at Ankara for Asia Minor slides (part of the K. Hopwood collection).

• Complete copyright transference procedures.• Complete metadata creation for Departmental

Collection by June 2010.• Make Departmental collection available as part

of a database-based project by January 2011.

Podcasts of lectures: Aims

• Provide reliable access to lectures to students with disabilities (ex. Visual impairments, dyslexia).

• Provide students with the opportunity to revisit lectures for essay preparation and exam revision.

• Provide students with access to “missed” lectures.

• Integrate alternative methods of learning.

• Two Part 2 courses and Two Part 1 courses piloted the program in Lent term 2009.

• The podcastswere made available to students via the P:Drive initially in WAV format and later in MP3.

Audio-recordings of lectures: The Future

• Introduce recordings of lectures to all undergraduate courses in the department in Michaelmas 2009.

• Buy 2 more audio-recorders. • Make audio-recordings of lectures

available on Moodle. • Start a pilot project for video-

enhanced learning in Lent 2009.

The Classics E-Learning Initiative

• The HEAT bid was part of the E-Learning initiative launched by the department in October 2007.

• The Aims of the E-Learning Initiative are:1. Provide better learning for students2. Increase student satisfaction, particularly in

relation to the lack of resources issue in past NSS.3. Increase resources available for research.4. Be Greener5. Provide lecturers with more and better teaching

material.6. Provide better distance-learning at MA and PhD

level.
