We’re on the home stretch toward the end of another busy year for the club. Of course it’s not over by a long chalk, but the club will be in recess from mid December until February 10th. We’ll be winding up with a bit of a social function on Sunday December 16th, an opportunity to actually come and have a chat with your fellow club-members - we’ll put on some nibbles for you and you’re welcome to bring instruments.

Although we take a holiday from Sunday clubnights, there’s still the Whare Flat Folk Festival from 29th December to 2nd January. Already we’re filling up 2013 with some great acts, so keep your eyes on the website and our facebook page.

Mike Moroney

Ukulele Class every Sunday from 6 - 7pm at the NEW venue, the Polytech Whanau Room , a pre fab building in Otago Polytech A Block (carpark accessed by St David Street). Ukes supplied if you don't have your own. If you've never played an instrument before, or even if you're a guitar whizz, this is a great way to play together. Our ukulelelady, Anna Bowen will have you strumming and singing along in no time. Probably the most fun you can have for $2.

Contradance is a form of American barndance and is an enjoyable mental and physical activity. Come along 7:30pm on Monday nights to the Baptist Church Hall, cnr Calder Ave and North Road (N.E.V.), and you'll be whisked through a number of exciting dances. You can learn-as-you-go; dances are called and you don't need to bring a partner. No previous dance experience is necessary, though knowing your left from your right is useful. There is a $3 cover charge.

Bits and pieces

Are you a member of the club? It's worthwhile, at $25 for an individual and $40 for a family or household giving you significant discounts to almost all our events. Email [email protected] and we'll set it up for you - you can even pay online, or ask at the door next time you come along to one of our events.

John Egenes and Dr Glam$3 / $5 Floor spots available

For those who still think folk music is something played on banjos by bearded men in overalls, the music of John Egenes just might change their minds. Sophisticated songwriting doesn't have to be elitist, and quality musicianship doesn't have to be inaccessible to mere mortals. Egenes is an Executant Lecturer in Contemporary Music at Otago University as well as an active founding member of NZMiC.

Dr Glam will present a sparkly variety show during his half of the Dr Glam/John Egenes Show at the New Edinburgh Folk Club. Being close to Halloween, appropriately nail-biting tales of things that go bump in the night will feature; a sci-fi vibe will again be present in the form of original tunes played on the hang drum ‘sphere-of-pleasure’, and the glittery one will also attempt to consummate an unholy but seductively apt alliance between folk & glam musiks – all live before the studio audience.

His latest CD, “The Stone Soup Sessions” was recorded at Albany St. Studios, with additional tracks sent from friends and colleagues from all over the world. In addition to working as a multi-instrumentalist recording session player, John is active in producing other artists. His latest projects include harpist Helen Webby’s new CD, “Pluck”, and a new album by New Zealand songwriter Donna Dean.

Four multi instrumentalists performing styles merging Celtic, Eastern European and Gypsy with Latin and tango rhythms underpinning great improvisation. Craig Denham (Mamaku Project, ex-Ardijah, Club Manouche) on accordion, keyboards, vocals and whistles, Jess Hindin (The Exiles, Tim Beveridge, Boh Runga etc) on violin and keyboards, Chris Koole (The Warners) percussion, and acoustic guitar star Mark Mazengarb on guitars and bouzouki.

Mark LaurentBrenda Liddiard

and

Mark and Brenda are part of that secret army of ‘indie’ musicians who fly just below the commercial radar, playing grass-roots music in an “unplugged” style. They’ve been touring New Zealand, Australia & the UK for 20 years, and what they enjoy most is to connect with audiences on an intimate level. They love playing acoustic clubs, small theatres, house concerts, churches - wherever people want to come close and really listen. But they can also be found jamming in a crowded cafe/bar, or filling large open spaces, like city squares or festival marquees, with the sound of guitars, mandolin, Rowan lute and harmonies.

They’re both songwriters, with their own styles, so they’ve become each others’ backing band. Mark has a penchant for acoustic rock, blues & reggae, whereas Brenda’s songs lean more towards new folk & alt. country. So what you get is an eclectic mix of material, that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate, or sound like a 4-piece band! They often also pepper their shows with short bursts of poetry as well, just to keep things interesting.

The Moroney FamilyAll performers in their own right, it’s oddly rare that they come together as a family ensemble; so here they are. After playing at the Whitestone Festival and encouraged by the reception they received there, Bernadette, Siobhan and Mike are coming together again to reprise their Whitestone set - and maybe one or two new items as well. Though each of them have diverse musical tastes, there’s plenty of common ground in the folk and country styles they’ve chosen.

Battered Old Hat$3 / $5 Floor spots available

Jean Barkman, Neil Copeland & Denis Gordon have each been involved in the local folk scene, on and off, since the the 70’s. Between them they have performed in a number of lineups, both solo and in groups. 'Battered Old Hat' brings their varied musical backgrounds together in one place, performing a range of music with vocal harmony as the prime focus. Their material includes songs both humorous & serious, songs to sing along with & songs to just listen to.

From time to time we may require volunteers for an hour or so for food preparation or gate duties, so let us know when you register or arrive that you might wish to put your hand up. The Whare Flat Folk Festival is run entirely by a volunteer crew. We are always looking for skilled helpers but we don’t just take all-comers. The festival crew is a team with a sense of ownership of the festival, many have years of experience behind them. Crew members should ideally:

• be dedicated and committed over several festivals• be even-tempered, problem solving and team players• have a particular skill or ability (organisational, technical, construction,

food and beverage, cleaning and consumables, security and supervision etc)

There is an organisational committee comprising of the various “heads of departments” and the during running of the festival we defer to “Camp Mother” (currently Sean Manning). If you wish to become involved in some aspect of the festival, please drop us a line to [email protected] and tell us a bit about yourself.

Want to help out?

Registration for the Whare Flat Festival is $140 per adult and $50 per school-age child (incl GST). This includes camping*.This is reduced by 15% for all bookings/payments received before Friday 21st December.

Day and Evening visitors are most welcome too, $20; school-age kids, $7.50 for the day (10am - 6pm) and the same again for evening (4pm - finish). Just pay at the gate. EFTPOS is available on the site for cash withdrawals and purchases.
