NEED HELP HEARING SUNDAY WORSHIP?
If you struggle to hear the various voices of our wor-
ship leaders, please speak with Jeff Zelensky. Jeff
can give you sound amplification headphones, so you
need not miss anything as we worship God together.
Rebecca’s Revelation
“But strive first for the realm of God and God’s righteousness, and all these things will be given to
you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also
should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for
one another.” (John 13:34-35)
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ! CHURCH! Our June 12th Homecoming Sun-
day in honor of Central’s 175th anniversary is almost here! Although I still have a million details to
attend to as I write this, I am so excited. In addition to all the “usual suspects” in our current con-
gregation, former members and pastors, Regional Minister and President, Rev. Rick Spleth, General
Superior of the Sisters of Providence, Sr. Denise Wilkinson, and General Minister and President of
the Christian Church (DOC), Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins will be with us. WE WANT OUR SANCTU-
ARY TO BE PACKED ON THIS SPECIAL, ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME DAY!
In the midst of all the work and energy and prayers for this day (and for this entire year-long cele-
bration), a book I recently read prompted me to ask, “Why?” Why are we doing all these things?
After 175 years, why is our particular faith community still here? In an age when many people are
not part of church or institutional religion, why do we do all that we do?
For me, it comes down to 2 major things. First, I truly believe God loves each and every human
being, God loves all of creation, unconditionally. God wants all to have abundant life and to have
what is necessary to thrive and be all that God intends. I know God best in the life, ministry, death,
and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and being part of the church helps me nurture and grow in my re-
lationship with God through worship, study, fellowship, and ministry with others who also strive to
follow Christ.
Second, far too many people do not know Jesus – or the God Jesus reveals – as I do. If they did
there would be far fewer hurting, lonely, and lost people. Those of us who know God’s love and
grace for ourselves, those of us who have made the decision to follow Jesus Christ, are – in no uncer-
tain terms – called to build God’s realm on earth. Even as we strive to find healing and wholeness
for ourselves, we work with God’s Spirit in making the world a more kind, more just, more compas-
sionate place for all. We are able to accomplish much more together as the faith community, we are
able to contribute more building blocks for God’s Realm together, than if we tried to do it alone.
For 175 years I think Central Christian Church has existed for these two reasons, and this is ab-
solutely worth celebrating. I also think that as we recall our history and all that CCC has accom-
plished in the world in Christ’s name thus far, it should inspire us to continue our mission and min-
istry with ever-greater enthusiasm and determination for the future.
Happy anniversary, Central Christian Church (DOC)! Rejoice, for God loves you!
Rev. Rebecca Zelensky
P.S. My Central Christian sisters and brothers, THANK YOU very much for the wonderful card and
spa gift to mark the 20th anniversary of my ordination into Christian ministry! I am so proud to be
your pastor and I am blessed to serve in Christ’s name with you.

BIG Read’s Focus for June is Joshua
Ahhh…to finally finish the Torah, the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures! My first se-
mester in seminary, my Old Testament professor thought that every minister of a local congre-
gation should know what was in each chapter from Genesis through Deuteronomy – that’s 187
chapters. Although I aced that exam, I am very grateful for Bible dictionaries, concordances,
and those concise titles at the beginning of chapters/sections in most bibles because other information in my brain
has buried most of what I memorized for that test.
Anyway, the time has arrived, BIG Readers, to move on with the Israelites into the Promised Land. Joshua is
an interesting as well as challenging book, especially for those who follow the ways of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
This book raises some important questions: Does God want some peoples to conquer others? Would the God of
the prophets and psalmists and Jesus really command the death of innocent children, women, the elderly, ani-
mals, etc. simply because they were living on land the Israelites wanted? Is there a more essential lesson to be
found in the pages of Joshua about God’s loyalty and faithfulness in spite of the disturbing issues of war and vio-
lence?
Even if you have not been reading the scriptures lately, jump back in with Joshua. To catch you up: (at the end
of Deuteronomy), Moses has died, the people have wandered for forty years in the wilderness, and (almost) every-
one who sassed God after leaving Egypt has died. It is time for the next generation of Hebrews to follow God and
settle into a permanent home. And don’t forget to send out your thoughts, questions, and reflections on these
readings via email!

Special Music for the Summer of 2016
As usual, the choir will be on "vacation" during the summer and we invite volunteers to contribute special talents
that will enhance the worship service during this time. You can sign-up at the Information Center to share your
musical gifts from May 22 through September 4. If you require an accompanist, please contact Karen Sagraves
with a copy of the music at least 2 weeks prior. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Sagraves or
Kelly Meyer. The musical offering should be something of a worshipful nature as it will be a part of the worship
service. We look forward to hearing from our talented congregation over the summer! The one exception will be
the Homecoming Sunday on June 12 when we will not only have the wonderful CCC Choir but we will have past
choir members joining us for this special Sunday. This promises to rattle some windows!
Save the dates!! The July 5th Sunday Musicale will be another musical treat. The regionally famous Little Ita-
ly Festival Singers will be entertaining us with traditional Italian songs. And, to top it off, the performance will
be followed by a spaghetti supper! You're going to want to come home early from vacation for this one! More de-
tails on this group in the July Clarion. Betsy Hine
Building God’s Realm through Mission & Outreach Sharing Acts of Kindness & Bookmarks (?) for CCC’s Anniversary
Tuesday, June 28, is the actual anniversary date for Central Christian Church. As a way of spreading God’s
love and grace and celebrating the congregation’s 175 years in Terre Haute, our Elders are encouraging all our
members and friends to do something extra special to commemorate the day.
Prior to June 28, bookmarks with the anniversary logo will be available at church. On June 28 – and through-
out that week – do some act of kindness for a person or persons in our larger community. For example, you may
want to pass out water bottles at one of our parks, pay for the person behind you in line at Java Haute or Sub-
way, put change in parking meters downtown, leave an encouraging note for a clerk or salesperson who waited on
you that day, etc. Then, give the recipient of your act one of our bookmarks that will say “This act of kindness
has been done for you in honor of Central Christian Church (DOC)’s 175th Anniversary!” Even those of us out of
town at that time will be participating: our God Squad will be passing out blessings bags – and bookmarks - to
the homeless in Lexington, KY that morning.
Mayor Duke Bennett has said that he will make a special Proclamation on June 28 to coincide with this out-
reach project, so let’s get out there, Central, and spread some kindness!

Special Thanks from Your Koinonia Fellowship Team We would like to thank everyone who attended our 175th Birthday celebration for our church
and our own birthdays on May 14th. We also extend a special thanks to Traci Tucker and Sarah
Wilson for making the delicious birthday cupcakes and the following ladies and young ladies
who volunteered to decorate and host a table for our 175th birthday party:
It was a fun, relaxing evening and another great way to join in the celebration of this very spe-
cial year in the life of our church. It’s always a blessing to gather and share in conversation and
great food. We have wonderful cooks here at Central and it’s a special treat to get to sample all
of the delicious dishes. The questions for conversation allowed everyone to get to know a little
more about each other and it was nice to mix-it up with persons sitting at the table of the
month of their birth.
Active Adult Activities
It was so nice to have fourteen persons join us for our May 13th dinner at Moggers. It was a per-
fect choice of a place to eat as we celebrate our 175th anniversary of Central Christian. We were
seated in a back room right in front of one of the beautiful stained glass windows that came
from our former church building at 207 N. 7th Street. A lot of other stained glass in the bar area
of the restaurant and the front doors also came from our old church.
Due to all of the June church activities and VBS in July, the next activity for the group will
be a cook-out at the Crist home at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday August 6th. Everyone is invited
to join us for any of our dinners or activities. There will be a sign-up sheet closer to the August
cook-out so the Crists will know how many to plan for. They’ll provide the meat, lemonade, iced
tea and soft drinks, and everyone can just bring a dish or dessert to help with the meal.
Update on Letter Campaign for Bread for the World
Dear Friend of Bread for the World,
I am pleased to report that on Primary Eve some 500 letters were placed in a basket on the altar in the
chapel of the United Campus Ministries center. There they were blessed in a ceremony attended by two
or more representatives from each of a dozen local churches. Bread member, Rev. Linda Peters officiat-
ed, and it was a true and memorable ecumenical occasion. The letters were delivered to the Indianapolis
offices of Senator Donnelly and Senator Coats and the Terre Haute office of Representative Bucshon.
The Terre Haute Tribune sent a photographer, so there may be a story in a recent Sunday paper.
If you intended to be involved, either as an individual or through your church, but didn't quite make it
this year, there will be many other opportunities, either next year through the community Offering of
Letters, or all year long via the messages you receive from Bread.org.
Our next Bread meeting will be June 13. For the time being, we will meet on the second Monday of the
month, at 6 p.m.
Thanks for being a part of this effort to address hunger, in Terre Haute and in the world at large.

175th Anniversary Homecoming Service & Dinner
Sunday, June 12th
We are very excited about this special day in the life of our church as we cele-
brate our 175th anniversary and hope you signed up to attend. It is an honor
that Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ), will be our guest preacher that day. Rev. Rick Spleth, Indiana
Regional Minister and President, will also be in attendance.
We were excited to hear that three of our former ministers will also be with us that day. Dr.
Rev. Richard Haynes will speak at the dinner, Rev Tom Russell will be doing one of his fa-
mous “Swag Bottom Creek” children’s sermons, and Rev. Verity Jones will be singing with
our choir. It was also wonderful to receive RSVP’s from several of our former members who
will be joining us in worship and those who were choir members will also be singing with our
choir that day.
Following the worship service we will transform the sanctuary into a dining area for our cele-
bration dinner. Rather than have a carry-in meal, the Koinonia Fellowship Ministry team
and your Christian Women’s Fellowship group have decided on the following menu:
Fried Chicken (from Baesler’s) Mashed Potatoes & Gravy Green Beans
Corn Tossed Salad Dinner Rolls
Birthday Cake & Cupcakes Lemonade, iced tea & coffee
Instead of asking persons to bring dishes for a carry-in, this set menu will make it easier for
people not to have to make a dish to bring to church; it will also move the serving line along
with access from both sides of the tables. A kind member has already talked to Bob Baesler
who has agreed to sell the chicken to us at half price and a donation to cover the remaining
cost has already been made. Special thanks to Traci Tucker and Sarah Wilson for their dona-
tion of one of their delicious cakes and cupcakes.
We have determined the amount of food required, based on the RSVP’s and the sign-up sheet
at church, and have posted tags of donated items needed for the meal on the display board in
the sanctuary. Since no one will have to bring a covered dish, if you are able, we are asking
persons to take a tag to purchase an item or make a cash donation. Koinonia Fellowship and
CWF will be preparing the food that morning. Please see Mary Beth Ripple or Sharon Crist
if you have any questions or would rather make a cash donation and they’ll do the shopping.
Other than the dinner rolls, all other items will need to be brought to church by June 9th.
Thanks for your support in making this special day in the life of our church one that we’ll
treasure and remember for years.

JUNE 18TH IS RAPIDLY APPROACHING
IT’S ALMOST TIME FOR THE COW DROP
We thank all of you for your support in selling tickets, wearing your Holy Cow shirts to ad-
vertise, posting flyers and putting up yard signs for our 3rdnd Annual Holy Cow Drop. It’s
not too late so keep selling those tickets! We hope you’ll join us for this fun event that
has the potential to be a huge fundraiser for our church. It is truly a family festival. The
day offers free parking, admittance and popcorn. While waiting for Betsy the Cow to choose
the winner, there will be free games, bounce houses, and other activities for the children.
Rondrell Moore of WTHI TV has already agreed to be one of our celebrity judges. Children
twelve and under will receive a free raffle ticket for a drawing at 2 p.m. for a Walmart gift
certificate for a bicycle. Grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, cow pie (no bake oatmeal
cookies), snow cones, soft drinks and bottled water will be available for purchase. Invite
your family, friends and neighbors to come and bring their lawn chairs, blankets or sit in
the bleachers and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
A grid of up to 3,000 (2 ft x 2ft) squares will be created on our property between the church
and the cemetery. Each $10.00 ticket purchased will be randomly assigned a square. Betsy
will be allowed to wander until 2:00 p.m. and the ticket holder of whichever square Betsy
decides to “fertilize” will win $10,000. If by 2:00 PM Betsy does not choose a square, then
the winner will be selected by a random drawing of all tickets sold. The winner does not
need to be present to win. Additionally, every half-hour beginning at noon there will be a
drawing for $50.00. Winning a $50.00 drawing does not affect the chances of winning the
$10,000.00.
We are still in need of lots of volunteers to help at the event, make cow pie (no bake oat-
meal) cookies, and to keep selling those tickets. Please sign up at church if you can help or
contact Lorri Ugo, Holy Cow Chair, at 812-249-3034 if you have any questions or need
more tickets to sell.
Please keep wearing your Holy Cow shirts when you’re out in the public at ballgames,
events, dinner, etc. to publicize our event. If you’ll be attending the Strawberry Fest at
First Congregational church, wear your Holy Cow shirts and have tickets with you in
case anyone’s interested. The tickets also make great gifts!!!
HOLY COW PIE COOKIE RECIPE
3 cups sugar
½ cup Hershey’s cocoa
½ cup milk
Dash of salt
1 stick of butter/margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-2 T peanut butter,
(smooth or crunchy)
3 cups quick oats
Combine sugar, cocoa, milk, butter/margarine and salt in a heavy 3-
quart saucepan (if you butter the top sides of pan when it is cold, this
usually helps prevent boiling over). Cook over medium-high heat,
STIRRING CONSTANTLY, until mixture comes to a FULL BOIL.
Cook 1 minute at full rolling boil, continuing to STIR CONSTANTLY.
Remove pan from heat. Add vanilla, peanut butter and then the oats
stirring well as you add each item. Drop by teaspoon onto waxed pa-
per. Let cool until firm.
HINT: Stirring constantly is the key to success in this recipe.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS
Cashiers-Yard Sale for Mission Trip
Youth & children plant geraniums at church Youth present check to church
Due to our extremely busy summer schedules at Central Christian we are giving our very dedicated children and youth Sunday School teachers a much deserved break! Sunday School will meet on June 5th and June 19th. We will not return to class again until August 7th.
Christian Education will still be ongoing in July through VBS. Our 1840s "Bethany Vil-lage Live" will be held each evening July 17-21. We will meet from 6:30 - 8:15 pm. Many people have volunteered to help with this important ministry for our children, but we still need help. We have various jobs available, but our greatest needs right now are an adult to lead games outside and people to build scenery. If you are able to help please let us know. Most importantly, we need children! Please invite your family, friends and neighbors. A VBS celebration will be held during worship on Sunday, July 24.
The Christian Education Committee will meet on Wednesday, June 1st at 6:00 pm. The main topic will be VBS. Everyone in-volved or interested in VBS is welcome to join us.
