You then visit Manassas National Battlefield Park, site of Civil War battles in 1861 and 1862, and Fredericksburg, where the Union army was badly bloodied in 1861. From there you carry on to Spotsylvania Battlefield, site of some of the Civil War’s most ferocious fighting, before touring the historical sites of Richmond: Hollywood Cemetery, Monument Avenue, St Paul’s Church, Chimborazo Hospital, and the White House of the Confederacy.
Rounding out your educational experience is a tour of the Siege of Petersburg Battlefield; a visit to Appomattox Court House where Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865; and an evening at the outstanding Pamplin Historical Park and National Museum of the Civil War Soldier.
This is going to be a fascinating learning experience on some of the most hallowed ground in America in what is the final year of the 150th-year observance of the Civil War. Expert guides, great museums, historical re-enactors, and friendly companionship—this is American history at its finest and most engaging.

locked in a bloody conflict between northern and southern states that would determine the future of the Union. Join UW-Madison for an extraordinary educational journey from the site of John Brown’s Raid in Harper’s Ferry, through the battlefields of Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Spotsylvania, and, ultimately, to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. You will be joined by expert guides and historians who will bring these events to life as you walk the grounds and experience firsthand the ebb and flow of the brutal battles that were waged between the Union and the Confederacy.
Your tour will begin in Harper’s Ferry, WV, where John Brown failed to incite a slave uprising but succeeded in shocking the south into the formation of the many local militias that would ultimately become the core of the Confederate Army. From there you will visit Antietam, the bloodiest one-day battle in American history, which ended Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the north and enabled President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
The next day will find you on the fields of Gettysburg. One of the more poignant sites in America, the battle between the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac that occurred here effectively ended any Confederate hopes of independence, at an unimaginable cost to both sides.
