City of Marion officials and local high school football coaches have announced plans for the David Bennett Football Camp sponsored by Anderson Brothers Bank. The free camp, for players 8-14 years old, will run Tues- day, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30-noon, June 26-28, at the Green Street Recreation Park. Marion County prep foot- ball coaches, along with the possibility of appearances from former Coastal Carolina football players and current NFL play- ers, will help with the camp. Bennett, the 2010 Big South Coach of the Year, most recently spent 10 seasons building the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleer football program. His teams have earned three consecutive Big South Confer- ence championships, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Five former players are in the NFL. Bennett said the camp is to inspire kids to become “better kids, better citizens, better friends, better students and all of that comes before being an athlete. Then one day that will transpire to being a good profes- sional, good husband and good father. I think that’s why we’re all here.” Berry said he knew high school football coaching staffs in the county would help be- cause of their commitment to the youth and their develop- ment in the sport. Pee Dee Academy Golden Eagles head coach Splinter Spivey said “Bringing the kids of the com- munity together, I think, is going to be a neat thing to do.” Mullins High School Auction- eers defensive coordinator Jimmy Vereen said the idea of a football camp is a great summer activity, giving young players something to do. Marion High School Swamp Foxes head coach Don Cribb was happy to have the camp near the team’s practice field. “It’s just a great opportunity to show the community that we are about our young people,” Cribb said. Creek Bridge High School athletic director Leon Sturkey said there is value in getting kids involved in some- thing early and that teaching the fundamentals of football is going to help future county foot- ball programs. Anderson Brothers Bank is underwriting the football camp and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be providing volun- teer coaches as well. Registra- tion ends June 19.
