The Girls Softball League has proven to be a home run for the Huntington Park community. On Saturday, October 1, 2016, the City of Huntington Park, Parks and Recreation Department hit the ground with its new Girls Softball League, with forty-four girls regis- tering to participate in the league, their ages ranging from eleven to fourteen years old. The softball league provided a safe, enjoyable and re- warding opportunity, teaching life skills, such as the importance of teamwork, competing through adversi- ty, responsibility, and dedication. With much support and coordination from sponsorships and volunteers, the softball league will provide an opportunity for youth to partake in an or- ganized and structured athletic program. The league will provide participants with weekly practices, games, and knowledgeable coaches to learn from. The Mayor of Huntington Park, an advocate for the league and former softball participant herself, was a grand believer in the success of the recreational program in the community and personally sponsored each participant who registered for the softball league. The Parks and Recreation Department hopes to continue having great success with the softball league and encourages all those interested in participating in the near future to follow up with the Department at a later time in order to learn more about the softball league. “Haunt”ington Park Halloween Festival

City of Huntington Park staff and volunteers spent Halloween night screaming, springing at and scaring attendees of the “Haunt”ington Park Halloween Fes-tival at Robert H. Keller Memorial Park – 6550 Miles Avenue, October 31, 2016. The night of horror proved to be a success, with the haunted house as the main attraction for the event with over 3,000 participants walking through. Candy bags were given to all those who survived the haunted house and other activities; such as, free train rides and carnival booths. A special screening Hotel Transylvania 2 was also available for those who did not dare enter the horrifying haunted building. With assistance from multiple City of Huntington Park Departments, along with Huntington Park Police Ac-tivities League (PAL), volunteers, and sponsors, the Halloween Festival was truly a night to remember. Everyone involved in coordinating this event did a great job generating terrors.

The Youth Services Unit of the Huntington Park Police Department offers various community-based services and programs for the City’s youth. Most of the programs operate through the support of the Huntington Park Police Department and its Police Activities League (PAL), which is identified as a 501(c) 3 organization. Huntington Park’s Police Activities League was established in 1998, in part to deter juvenile delinquency, build leadership skills, and foster community relations. Eighteen years later, the Police Activities League continues to further its mission of offering innovative youth programs that promote positive relationships between cops, kids, and the community. This October, the Department hosted one of its newest youth programs — The Teen Police Academy. The Academy is a 10-week, after school program that is both educational and interactive. It is specifically designed for those between the ages of 14-17, with ties to the community. The objective is to provide the participants an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of how the Department operates and to demonstrate the benefits of community-based policing. During the Academy the participants will meet the Chief of Police and learn from police officers and specialized police personnel about various topics, which include, but are not limited to Department procedures; criminal investigations; patrol operations; support services; crime prevention and community relations; and much more. Ultimately the Department wishes to enhance positive relationships between Cops, Kids and the Community as a whole.
