Mike Kloeppel, the newly hired Director of Economic and Community Development, is responsible for Community Development. Mike, a native of
Bernalillo, brings a wealth of experience to the Town of Bernalillo. Prior to working with the Town, Mike was the Director of Admission at New Mexico
Tech. He is a graduate of Bernalillo High School and received his Bachelor of Science from New Mexico Highlands University in Biology/Environmental
Science.
“One of the main reasons I wanted to work in this capacity for the Town of Bernalillo is I’d love to give something back. My family has a long
history here in Bernalillo, and it’s a wonderful place to grow up and I’d like to continue
the great work already started and work on adding a few more things to enhance them.”
We’ve already had a few programs/activities for the residents of Bernalillo. In April, we had
ARBOR/EARTH DAY (sale of trees/plants/shrubs/flowers at a reduced price), GREAT AMERICAN CLEAN-UP (free dumping at Sandoval County landfill and Public Works
Department), and a MEMORIAL DAY PARADE (remembering our fallen heroes). The Town
will continue to have many of these programs in the future and we’ll be adding a few more so
please be on the lookout for the dates/times/location.

4TH OF JULY F IRE SAFETY
Fire Chief Mike Carrol
Did you know that on July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States? Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event. It declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as the new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.
Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and political speeches and ceremonies.
As we celebrate this great historic event please keep in mind that there is nothing patriotic about suffering injuries and having to go to the emergency room when everyone else is celebrating.
Here are some Fourth of July safety tips: ∗ First and foremost, obey local laws. If you do partake in lighting fireworks proceed with caution and use common sense.
∗ Follow the directions on all fireworks, and don’t use them for anything other than what they’re intended for.
∗ Don’t attempt to alter nor combine fireworks products. ∗ Report illegal explosives to the nearest fire or police department.
∗ When lighting fireworks, always have water handy. A hose is best, but a bucket will suffice.
∗ Spectators should remain a safe distance from the fireworks being lit.
∗ Whoever lights the fireworks must be sober, wear safety glasses, and keep clothing well away from the flame when lighting.
∗ Only light fireworks outdoors on a smooth, flat surface, away from all flammable materials including dry leaves and paper.
∗ Never try to relight fireworks that appear to be duds. Wait up to 20 minutes for a possible delayed ignition. Then if nothing happens, soak the firework in a bucket of water and dispose of it.
∗ Dispose of all firework materials by first soaking them in water before putting them in the trash.
∗ Keep sparklers away from clothing and other flammable materials.
Most of all this is a reminder to use caution and be safe this holiday season. So, to each and every one of you: HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!
