St. Mark's Square is thesymbol that expressesVenice worldwide and

its image is identified with the city.Every part of the Squarerepresents a political, social,ethical or religious entity:from the church housing theremains of the patron saint tothe government building, thehome of the Principe, thehomes of the "St. Mark’sProcurators", the Library withits collection of valuable antique manuscripts, the Mint- symbol of economic prestige- and the seventeenth-centurybuildings on the site of SanGeminiano church and of theformer Procurators whichwere destroyed to make spacefor Napoleon's works. Situated at the centre of thelagoon, probably to assert thestability of the place chosenfor the third foundation of thecity, the fruits of a fortunateseries of events and meetingsbetween enlightened gover-nors and artists, St. Mark'sSquare was created just as it appears today despite centu-ries of later works carried outin keeping with its existingforms or by exploiting skilfulinnovations. On looking atthis ‘drawing room’, it strikesone how it lies almost apartfrom the rest of the urbanfabric: aloof, with its ownindependent countenance.This fact, conveyed by thegrandeur of its architecture,was undoubtedly what theVenetians wanted. FESTIVITIESIn the 10th. Century, when Doge Piero Orseolo died, he left his

estate to be divided into three equal parts: for his family, for the

poor and for the expenses of festivities in Venice. The magistra-

te of ceremonies who controlled the coffers (treasurer) was

usually restrictive in its use. However on occasions, the State

itself ordered festivities without cash limits. The citizens played

part in the choreography: spectators and actors at the same

time. The main square was covered in banners, damask cloth

and garlands to show the finery and power of the city.

LE FESTEIl doge Piero Orseolo, nel X secolo, lascia per testamento il suo

patrimonio liquido diviso in tre parti uguali: ai parenti, ai poveri

e alle spese per le festività di Venezia. Il Magistrato alle Pompe,

che controllava la cassa, fu sempre restrittivo, ma vi furono

occasioni in cui lo Stato stesso ordinava di spingersi oltre lo

sfarzo. I cittadini facevano parte della coreografia: erano spet-

tatori e attori allo stesso tempo. La Piazza in queste occasioni

era coperta di stendardi, damaschi e festoni per dare ancora

una volta il senso della potenza della città.

Collocata al centro dellalaguna, probabilmente peraffermare la stabilità delluogo scelto per la terza fon-dazione della città, frutto diuna fortunata serie di eventie di incontri, fra governantiilluminati ed artisti, PiazzaSan Marco venne realizzata,così come appare ancor oggi,attraverso secoli di elabora-zioni operate sempre nelrispetto delle forme esistentio di abili innovazioni.Guardandola si rimane colpi-ti nel riscontrare come essa sistacchi dal rimanente tessutourbano, presentandosi in unmodo quasi autonomo: que-sto fatto, suggerito dall'im-portanza delle sue architettu-re, fu certamente voluto daiVeneziani. is so replete with historicalsignificance that the visitordoes not merely gaze on - asoften happens when admiringancient monuments - but isinvited to recognise and redi-scover the place as it musthave been in the past. All famous or decisive eventsin Venetian history - as well aseveryday stories - took placeor were celebrated here. Thepeople gathered in the Piazzaback in the 10th century totake part in the most impor-tant decisions of the times. Allthe most important magistra-cies and the "Procurators"had their headquarters here.The magistracies connectedwith commerce, trading andfinance had their headquartersin the Rialto district, whichwas connected to the squareby "Marzaria", a traders’street. But commercial activi-ties also used to take place inthe square e.g. the Becarie, andthe bakery in the Piazzetta, aswell as the different trades car-ried out in the shops under theporticoes. Many other activi-ties took place on the barklooking out across the lagoon,between the shore and themoored ships, close to wheregoods were loaded and unloa-ded and the produce was sto-red in the provisions warehou-ses that the Venetians used tolocate in a privileged position.While these aspects of theactivities in the square invol-ved many citizens, they wereundoubtedly all affected bythe proclamation of generalrules or exceptional facts, readby a messenger who climbedatop the “announcement stone”at the corner of the Basilica bet-ween the Piazza and thePiazzetta. St. Mark's Square,above all a place of representa-

JUSTICEThe square is not a place usually associated with violent deaths, yet theRepublic used it for capital punishment by hanging or decapitation afterwhich the remains of the dead were left for days as a warning to all. Theadministration for justice had its headquarters, offices and prisons in theDoge’s Palace and manifested a strong and solemn influence not onlyon the common people but also on the ruling classes. It worked in a spectacular manner by the use of placing stone tablets toremember names, crimes and punishment inflicted against those whohad offended the State (in particular for theft from the revenues), also inthe choice of public executions, in the main square attended by theDoge and his main officials. This shows how the State wanted to keep a strong hold on its power andto see for itself how the people reacted to these sentences also showingit did not take punishment lightly, as often happened in that period. In fact, it was custom only for brutal crimes rarely for political ones.Executions took place between the two columns in the small square, orbetween the two red marble columns in the loggia of the Palace, for theDoge to look out on the scene.

La sua funzione, oggi perdu-ta, era quella di torre campa-naria: il suono delle sue cin-que campane segnava, nellacittà e nella laguna, la vitadei cittadini.

Ma in Piazza c'eranoanche attività di commercio:le "Becarie", la "Panetteria"nella Piazzetta e i vari mestieriche si svolgevano nelle botte-ghe sotto ai portici.Molte altre numerose attivitàsulla riva, dalla riva alle naviancorate, in vicinanza deiluoghi di sbarco e d'imbarcodelle mercanzie e delle derra-te custodite nei depositi divettovaglie che i venezianisituarono in una posizioneprivilegiata. Se questi aspettidell'attività in Piazza riguar-davano molti cittadini, tuttierano sicuramente interessatialle "grida", su norme gene-rali o fatti eccezionali, letteda un messo salito sulla "pie-tra del bando" posta all'ango-lo della basilica tra Piazza ePiazzetta. La Piazza, luogo sopratuttodi rappresentanza e di rappre-sentazione, faceva sempre dasfondo: ad esempio all'accla-

The entire settingof St. Mark's, the square withthe waterfront and the basin,would to take on maximumimportance: a theatrical back-drop of stunning beauty.During the period of foreigndomination too, St. Mark'sSquare was given two indeli-ble signs: the NapoleonicWing - the wish of Napoleon,and the white facade of thepatriarchal curia, this on theother hand being the wish ofthe Austrians. The belfry withits grand cella, was an excel-lent observation point over thesea and the inland area. Itsfunction - since lost - was thatof a bell-tower, and the tollingof its five bells used to markthe life of the citizens, in thecity and the lagoon.

LA GIUSTIZIALa Piazzetta è un ambiente che poco si presta ad evocare morti violen-te, eppure in questo luogo la Repubblica usava far eseguire le sentenzecapitali, per impiccagione o decapitazione, lasciando i resti dei giusti-ziati per più giorni sul posto a esempio e monito. L'amministrazione dellagiustizia, che nel Palazzo aveva la sua sede, i suoi uffici e le prigioni, siestrinsecava in maniera molto forte e solenne per incidere non solo sulpopolo, ma anche sulla classe al potere. Il suo carattere era semprespettacolare: dalla consuetudine di apporre lapidi per ricordare peren-nemente i nomi, le colpe e il castigo di chi aveva commesso reati con-tro lo stato (in particolare derubando l'erario), alla severità delle esecu-zioni capitali in piazza, nel più importante luogo della città alla presen-za, spesso, del Doge. Questo fa capire come lo stato, così accentratoredi poteri, volesse rendersi conto di come i cittadini reagivano agli atti dicondanna e non avesse, in definitiva, il costume di uccidere facilmente,come era usanza in quei tempi. Si trattava, infatti, sempre di condanneper delitti efferati, raramente per delitti politici. Le esecuzioni avevanoluogo fra le due colonne della Piazzetta, o fra le due colonne di marmorosso della loggia di Palazzo, dove usava affacciarsi il Doge.

Collection, Venice,

Sculpture at Goodwood, is

the venue for an exhibition

“thinking big: concepts for

twenty-first century British

sculpture”.

There are 86 small-scale

works by 73 artists born in

seven different decades of

the twentieth century.

Produced in every conceiva-

ble material, from marble,

wood and bronze to rubber,

resin and photgraphic paper,

the works both reveal and cele-

brate the remarkable diversity

and innovation of sculpture in

Britain today.

In addition to an existing col-

lection of models of works

previously commissioned and

realized on a larger scale at

Goodwood, Sculpture at

Goodwood and the Peggy

Guggenheim Collection have

commissioned some 32 new

maquettes expressly for the

Venice exhibition.

As a complement to the exhi-

bition of maquettes in the

indoor galleries, a series of

larger works will be shown in

the Peggy Guggenheim Col-

lection sculpture garden.

Monumental Egypt.The monumentality of ancientEgypt through large-scaleworks that only the centralcourtyard of the Venetianpalace could contain.

Three thousand years ofhistory: the gallery of por-traits of the pharaohs.These singular faces, fusingdivine and royal symbology,testify to an incessant rene-wal at work in Egyptian artwithin the continuity of tradi-tion. For the first time, thevisitor is able to view all thefigures who wove the historyof ancient Egypt together,from Chefren to Tutan-khamun, from Ramses toCleopatra.

The emblems of the pharao-nic royalty.The exhibition presents twomajor themes which at firstsight seem to be in conflict:the divine character andhuman nature of the pha-raoh. Multiple manifestationsof power which show thepharaoh in the role of a divi-ne child or as an animal.

Entro una lunga galleria diritratti, i profili di quantigovernarono l’Egitto che testi-moniano un rinnovamentoincessante delle opere d’artein Egitto, entro la continuitàdella tradizione. Sono stati riuniti tutti i perso-naggi che hanno tessuto la sto-ria dell’Antichità egiziana, daKefren a Tutankhamon, daRamesse a Cleopatra.

His good governmentis illustrated by the represen-tation of an official palacefrom where, written out byan army of officials andrecorded in the royal archi-ves, his orders were dispat-ched across Egypt.

The pharaoh and his court.Within his palace, the pha-raoh, the man, appears free

of the official nature of hisrole, with his daily life, hispleasures and his entourage.In this context, the soverei-gn’s family, with his manywives and children, plays acentral role. Numerous ser-vants waited on the sovereignin the palace, as did a richarray of courtiers, each with adifferent role: tutors of thenoble offspring, fan carriersetc. We know that at thecourt, and more specificallyin the royal harem, plots weresometimes hatched.

The death of the pharaoh.The exhibition itinerary con-cludes with the death of thepharaoh. After an evocationof the Valley of the Kingsand the royal burials, thesumptuous treasures of thekings of Tanis, heirs of thekings of the New Kingdom,give witness to the storeswhich the pharaoh was pro-vided with to walk the roadsof the afterlife.

An itinerary of posters, themost traditional visual com-munication instrument reali-sed by Ed Fella, creating adialogue between author andvisitor, a route telling a story,allowing the spectator toreflect. A type of exhibition beinginstalled during the period inwhich the other initiatives“Vasi Comunicanti” takeplace.Ed Fella’s work althoughmaintaining a traditional arti-stic approach, using paper,pens and pencils, is an exam-ple of permanent research,continual updating, and anuntiring consideration ofvisual art in rapid movement. Almost an ironical juxtaposi-tion compared to the visualart graphics of recent usealmost entirely digital means.

Since 1992 ErikKessels and Johan Kramer have advertised the hostel at Amsterdam, whose image has gainedin International fame. “To be honest, sincere and not to take oneself too seriously”, is the Brinkerstrategy. THE FEAST OF “MADONNA DELLA SALUTE”

A pontoon bridge is built acrossthe Grand Canal for the occa-sion. Tens of thousands of resi-dents and locals come to light acandle for the Black Madonnawho freed the city of the plague.Near the Basilica, street stallssell sweets and traditional dou-ghnuts, or toys and balloons as

they have done for the last three hundred years, mixing religious andpagan traditions.

Finita la peste del 1630 ilcastigo divino si inter-ruppe. Subito si pensò di

innalzare un altro tempio voti-vo ( quello del Redentore fucostruito alla Giudecca nel1576 per la fine della grandepeste nera). Nel gennaio del1632 si abbatterono le case delSeminario vicino Punta dellaDogana e si diede luogo alvaglio dei progetti degli archi-tetti che parteciparono albando. Ne arrivarono 11 e conquesti anche quello di Baldas-sarre Longhena, un 26-ennepiccolo di statura, semprevestito di nero, ma gentile contutti. Il suo maestro, VincenzoScamozzi, era stato uno deimigliori discepoli del Palladio.Baldassarre nacque probabil-mente a Brescia intorno al1598, ma non si è mai trovato

S. MARIA FORMOSACastello, 5263ph. +39.041.2750462According to legend, the churchwas founded in 639 AD by St.Magno, Bishop of Oderzo. It is oneof the earliest of eight churchesbuilt in the lagoon during the 7thcentury. In the 12th century it wasrebuilt in the form of a Greekcross. The shape underlines theresettlement begun in 1492 byMauro Codussi, the leading archi-tect of the early VenetianRenaissance. Codussi left it unfinis-hed on his death. In the interior, astriking play of lights emphasisesthe centrality of the church and theinteresting vaults and domes.

THE PLAGUEIn just one year, Venice lost 46,000 of its inhabitants. They were

victims of the third wave of plague which hit the city in 1630. In

the June of that year, the Venetian troops returning from Mantua,

who had been sent by the Serenissima to help the duchy with

the German invasion, were placed in quarantine on the island of

Lazzaretto Vecchio. A carpenter who came into contact with the

Venetian ambassador who had also returned from Mantua in the

evening at home in the San Vio area spread the disease throu-

ghout the city. The health superintendents issued many instruc-

tions on how to decontaminate homes, divide the ill among the

different hospitals and send uninfected people out into the

country. The patriarch Giovanni Tiepolo ordered processions

and public prayers throughout the city. Already back in the six-

teenth century, someone had realised that the infection was

spread by “certain tiny animals so small they cannot be seen”,

but a long time was to pass before it was understood that those

tiny animals were the fleas of the black rat.

was probably born in Bresciain around 1598, but his bap-tism certificate has neverbeen found. His father was amodest mason called Melchi-sedech, meaning he was pro-bably born Jewish. The life ofthis cordial and very culturedarchitect is a total mystery -he never studied regularlyand he had a passion formysticism. For those peopleable to read them, the basili-ca is a maze of thoughts,cabalistic phrases and strangesymbols. The Venetian Sena-te chose the drawings of thisman from Brescia as theywere the most beautiful,although they were unusualfor a temple dedicated toliberation from a plague. The tablets of the design havequite detailed dimensionswhich describe a squared dia-gonally overlapped layout witha symbolic, but explicit, refe-rence to Venice being re-bornfrom the water, similar to thatof Venus Physizoa (the litho-graph contained in the work ofFrancesco Colonna, Hypner-otomachia Polifili, 1499).Number 8s blatantly appeareverywhere (it is octagonal),like 11s and 15s (e.g. theaccess steps, whose numberalludes to Solomon's Temple,and the 15 mysteries of thecrown of the Rosario). Thereare numbers, symbols andletters, such as those in theJewish Kabbalah. Every detail has a meaningthat only a careful hermeneutcould discover. In the firstbook of Kings, the Bible sta-tes, "In the eleventh year, inthe month of bul, which isthe eighth, the temple wascompleted in all its plan andorder" (Kings 6.38). TheBasilica della Salute was con-secrated in 1687.

Il numero 8 compare palese-mente ovunque (è ottagonale)come anche l’11 e il 15 (gliscalini d’accesso, il cui numeroallude al Tempio di Salomonee ai 15 misteri della corona delRosario). Numeri, simboli e letterecome nella Kabbalah ebraica.Ogni particolare aveva unsignificato che solo un attentoermeneuta poteva scovare. Nel primo libro dei Re, laBibbia dice: "Nell'anno undi-cesimo, nel mese di bul, che èl'ottavo, il tempio fu condottoa termine secondo tutto il suopiano e il suo ordinamento" (iRe 6,38).La Basilica della Salute fu con-sacrata nel 1687, cinque annidopo la morte di BalthasarLonginus.

LA PESTEIn un solo anno Venezia perse 46 mila abitanti. Erano le vittime

della terza ondata di peste che colpì la città nel 1630. Nel giu-

gno di quell’anno le truppe veneziane di ritorno da Mantova,

spedite dalla Serenissima in aiuto del Ducato contro l’invasione

tedesca, furono messe in quarantena nell’isola del Lazzaretto

Vecchio. Un falegname, a contatto con l’ambasciatore vene-

ziano anch’egli di ritorno da Mantova alla sera in casa nella

zona di S.Vio, propagò il morbo in tutta la città.

I Provveditori alla Sanità emanarono molte disposizioni su come

bonificare le case, dividere gli ammalati nei vari ospedali e

spedire nelle campagne le persone non infette. Il patriarca

Giovanni Tiepolo ordinò processioni e preghiere pubbliche in

tutta la città. Già all’inizio del ‘500 qualcuno aveva capito

che il contagio avveniva grazie a “certi animaletti di tanta

piccolezza che non si possono vedere”, ma si dovette spettare

ancora molto per capire che quegli animaletti erano le pulci

del ratto nero.

MARIADELLA CARITÀ Dorsoduro, 1050La Scuola della Carità representsone of the ancient Venetian non-denominational institutions: foun-ded in 1260, it received the apella-tion Grande (formerly Scuole deiBattuti, that imposed flagellation tothe faithful, were Grandi). Like allthe other Scuole, this one too wasclosed by Napoleon’s edict in 1806,when the building became theAccademia di Belle Arti (School offine Arts).

SCUOLA GRANDE DELLA MISERICORDIACannaregio, Fondamenta dellaMisericordiaLa Scuola della Misericordia unlike the other scuole is not near a church and it has not been restored. The imposing brick building wasnever completed. It was built onthe other side of the Rio dellaSensa. During the 20th century itbegan a sports building. Full restoration works currentlyunder way will allow it to be usedagain.

THE CHURCH OF SAN VIDAL The Doge Vitale Falier had this church built in the 11th Century,although traces of later structural additions are evident. A hundred and fifty years ago the monument to Titian was crea-ted and it is eighty years since the convent monks returned to thebasilica. Il sistema fognario venezianoè complesso e antico come lastoria della città. In pratica pochissime casesono collegate alla rete fogna-ria comunale. Le altre scarica-no direttamente, o parzial-mente, tutti i prodotti deibagni nei canali. Che con l’ac-qua alta esondano.

Mose (Experimental electromechanicModule) is a mobile gate system whichmany hope will solve the problem ofhigh water in Venice. It was planned bythe “Consorzio Venezia Nuova”, for the“Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia”.The acronym was successful possiblydue to its biblical reference to the childsaved from the water and bulrushes.It is made up of 79 sluice gates to placeat the three lagoon openings, LidoMalamocco and Chioggia. In a normal position they will be underwater but when a high tide is due, 4-5times a year, they will rise up to the sur-face to stop the water coming from thesea into the lagoon, remaining on thesurface for three or four hours. The costis estimated at two billion euro, and theconstruction time eight years.Environmentalist groups remain wor-ried and oppose the plan: the tempo-rary blocking of the water flow coulddestroy the particular ecosystem of theVenice lagoon. The path has been longand difficult but now it seems to be atthe operative stage. A plan awaited bymany and feared by others.

Nelle case il pane era una rarità, era il com-plemento delle pietanze a Natale, a Pasqua,durante le feste in generale; attaccata ad un

trave della cucina c'era la cesta del pane ed il panefatto in casa era custodito con gelosa attenzione.All’inizio del 900 ogni contrada aveva il forno, unforno in comune ove periodicamente (il momentodel pane era legato al tempo della mietitura) il paneveniva sfornato. Chi coltivava terre di proprietà godeva del previle-gio di avere "il pane quotidiano", anche se occorrericordare che il frumento costituiva una fonte diguadagno e quindi la polenta finiva per essere pertutti la base dell'alimentazione. Ogni zona avevaparticolari "forme" di pane: la ciopa, la ciopeta, elpaneto, la roseta (a forma di fiore), el bovolo (aforma di chiocciola), ecc…ed ancora oggi a Veneziac’è solo l’imbarazzo della scelta.Accanto al panebianco fatto con la farina di fiore e al pan traversoa base di farina integrale c’era el pan scafetò , checorrisponde all'attuale pan biscottto, prodotto informa e dimensione diverse.Il pan biscotto deve un po' al gusto e molto allanecessità il suo grande successo. A volte la pastaveniva ingentilita, addolcita e resa più nutrientecon grasso, miele, uova, diventava un biscotto daoffrire in dono alle donne dopo il parto. Ma per iveneziani, uomini di mare spesso costretti a restarea lungo imbarcati, il pan biscotto (per la produzio-ne del quale presto sorsero numerosi forni gestitidallo Stato) fu il pane preferito grazie alla sua caratteristica di mantenere inalterato il gusto permolto tempo.

Bread was a rarity in the homes of theVenetians, an addition only to the mealsat Christmas, Easter, or special occasions.

Hanging from a beam in the kitchen was thebreadbasket, the home made bread jealouslyguarded.At the beginning of the 20th century each areahad its own baker’s, a common oven wherebread was baked periodically (bread making wasconnected to the harvest time). Those with theirown land to cultivate were privileged and couldhave “daily bread”, although it should beremembered that wheat was a source of incomeand therefore corn mash was a basic food foreveryone.Each area had a different shape for bread: theciopa, ciopeta, el paneto, la roseta (rose shaped),el bovolo (snail shell), and so on and even todayin Venice there is still a wide choice of rolls.Near the white bread, the “pan traverso” brownbread made with whole wheat flour was the elpan scafetò, which corresponds to today’s “panbiscotto” melba toast, made again in differentshapes and sizes.“Pan biscotto” was popular for its taste and fornecessity. Sometimes it was sweetened and mademore nutritional by adding fats, honey or eggs.This became a traditional offering to ladies afterchildbirth. But for the Venetians, men of the sea,often remaining on board ships for long periods,“pan biscotto” became a favourite thanks to itsquality of maintaining flavour and texture forlong periods.
