“Dear John Letters: Love Lessons from John”

I realize the expression “Dear John Letters” does not conjure up pleasant thoughts for

most of us. To have received a Dear John Letter was to have received bad news, news

that a relationship we were still invested in had unbeknownst to us gone bankrupt, a

flame of love that we thought was still burning had unbeknownst to us gone out. In

short, a Dear John Letter was heart breaking.

During the month of February, (the “love month” with Valentine’s Day) I want to share

with you a new sermon series that may not heal any of your painful memories of previ-

ous Dear John Letters, but I hope will give all of us a greater and deeper appreciation

for the Love Lessons found in the Gospel of John and the First Letter of John. This ser-

mon series, “Dear John Letters: Love Lessons from John,” will explore the theme of

love in the writings of John.

Now I realize that there is perhaps no more overused and misused word in the English

language than the word “love.” And I am as guilty as anyone. I catch myself all the time

saying things like, “I love chocolate chip ice cream.” “I love basketball.” “I love that

movie.” And in the same breath and using the same word, “I love God.” or “I love Je-

sus.” As you know, to overuse any word can contribute to a diminishment in its overall

    power, meaning and impact.

What could we possibly learn new about such a familiar word? In this “Dear John Let-

ters: Love Lessons”series, I want to find out. I want to reclaim this overused word and

seek to help all of us discover new depth and new meaning in this most powerful of all

    the words in the Bible.

As you know, Jesus said that the entire Law and the Prophets, we would say, “The en-

tire Bible” could be summed up with two commands, “Love God and love your

neighbor.” The writer of John, who has more to say about love than any other writer in

the Bible, puts it this way, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten

son…” “If you say you love God and hate your brother or sister, you deceive your-

selves.” “I give you a new commandment that you should love one another.” “Whoever

does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

    February 5 John 3:16 “Love’s First Move”

    February 12 1 John 4:7-12 “God is…”

February 19 1 John 4:16b-21 “Lovin’ or Lyin’”

    February 26 John 13:31-35 “Love’s Marching Orders”

If the expression “Dear John Letter” still has a great deal of painful residue for you, I

ask that you lay that aside, invite someone to join you in worship in February and open

yourself to new discoveries, new insights, and most importantly, a new commitment to

what the writer of John has to teach us about the word “love.”

Much grace, peace, and dare I say, love!

    Dr. Jay
