June 2020 Since mid-March, we have used many words to describe the current pandemic season for our church family including wilderness and exile. Our Church Council has identified a Task Force to work on the plan for opening our doors so that we can resume programs and on-site worship services, yet what might our Church embrace in the present and in the future to get to a *new* normal?

Believing. Church family & friends, continue to study Scripture and

to reflect on what you believe about God, Christ and the Holy Spirit. Join us as we continue to “tune-in” to our worship services & lessons:

► Worship on RADIO on Sundays @ 10 AM (91.3 FM).

► Worship ON-LINE through Facebook and/or YouTube Channels and/or website: Sundays @ 10:30 AM & 6 PM; 5-Minute Mondays @ 6:45 AM; Word + Table Wednesdays @ 7:30 AM plus other opportunities as scheduled and promoted.

► J.A.M. Lessons for children & youth ON-LINE on Sundays @ 9 AM & Wednesdays @ 7 PM. Plus groups for adults ON ZOOM: Sundays @ 8 AM, Early Risers; 9 AM, Seekers; 9 AM, Coffee & Conversation (contact Church Office for links to join Zoom groups).

Belonging. In addition to Sunday lessons & groups, we are creating

“circles of care” in our church family for connection — read more inside. Missing your small group & wanting to do something? Watch for *new* Love Languages group and other new possibilities — groups will resume in our facilities when safely possible & able to meet directed health measures.

Becoming. We continue to BE THE CHURCH — the Mission

Committee’s “Stuff the Truck” for area food pantries was very successful. Healthy Congregation Team challenges us with initiatives for positive mental health. Give the gift of life at our next First UMC Blood Drive on Monday, June 29. Lift up, reach out, make a difference.

5 Just as you cannot understand the path of

the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby

growing in its mother’s womb, so you

cannot understand the activity of God, who

does all things. 6 Plant your seed in the

morning and keep busy all afternoon, for

you don’t know if profit will come from one

activity or another—or maybe both. – Ecclesiastes

11:5-6 (NLT) I have been drawn to the book of Ecclesiastes during this time. I keep thinking over and over about “a season for everything”. I think about the need to keep focused on what is important and not the meaningless. The words in this book, if read in the wrong spirit, can be very depressing, but when we focus on the incredible things that our Lord does; there is hope. Because of these words, I’m looking back at other people in the Bible to see what they have done and how they handled the situations they were in. For June and July, we thought it will be fun for Cindi and I to ask “What Would ‘J’ Do?”

I hope this summer you find encouragement in the people who went before us: their failures, their successes and how they moved forward. Grace & Blessings, Pastor Joe

The LORD will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:7b-8

There was a question posed at one of my many Zoom clergy meetings that I have pondered: “Are we experiencing an interruption or a disruption?” An interruption is the break in the continuity of something. A disruption is a forcible separation or division into parts. Both can be perceived positively or negatively. Right now, we do have an interruption in the continuity of our daily, weekly and monthly tasks. Right now, we have experienced our lives being divided into parts.

Spiritually speaking, interruptions can be a welcome break to long days and life-giving reminding us to pray for one another and/or to reach out to a neighbor. Spiritually speaking, disruptions can break up the status quo and invite a new way of being or doing. Whether we are experiencing one or the other, there can be no doubt that the Church is being called to respond with faith and to embrace the new thing that God may be calling us to do for such a time as this.

Thank goodness the LORD is watching over our “comings” and “goings” in this season! Join us in June & July as we will dig deeper into Bible stories of divine interruption and/or divine disruption.

*NEW* Circles of Care

Our Great Plains Bishop Ruben Saenz, Jr. has encouraged and challenged churches to develop groups of about 12 persons to help to connect one another in this season of our Church’s life.

Right now, a small group of church leaders are helping to develop these Circles of Care groups and to identify connections thru geographical areas (like a neighbor-hood) and/or common interests or just what we’re calling “a wild blend”

as well as leaders who would be willing to do the following: ● Make monthly contact with each individual

or family unit in your “Circle of Care” ● Help to communicate church info ● Identify what’s happening including joys,

concerns, prayer requests and/or any needs If YOU are interested in helping to lead a Circle of Care, please let one of the following know ASAP: Anne and/or Doug Kallesen, Martha Davidson, Kara Asmus, Dee Kinkaid and/or Rev. Cindi. We are hoping to have these groups established within the month of June! Help us to accomplish this goal.

Mission & Ministry Pics

Class of 2020 “Drive By Honk & Wave” at the Church on May 17 brought some of our high school grads to celebrate with Church family members and friends. While scholarships have been announced, Christian Education & Youth Director Sarah Borgman reminds us that we are going to schedule an opportunity to celebrate our students in worship when we are able.

Stuff the Truck, Shop By the Church & collections for Peanut & Stretch made MAY Wednesdays fun!

$500 Healthy Ministry Grant provided an iPad & case, card stock, clipboards & wind chimes to area care facilities.

50 units of blood was collected on May 4 for the First UMC Blood Drive! Connie Jensen says, “Thank You!” Give the gift of life at the next First UMC Blood Drive on Monday, June 29.

Trustees Projects & Pictures

Board of Trustees members have kept busy in our facilities through the pandemic — the “shower project” at our Outreach Center had already begun & final touches are being made! This means that we now have TWO shower rooms thanks to an UMCOR grant from last year’s flooding. Showers & accommodations can be provided to mission groups traveling through.

Extra stained glass (from second floor restroom) has been framed, backlit and will be placed in the Gath-ering Area between windows! As a result, the Gathering Area and hallway has been patched & in process of being painted.

In addition, the Board of Trustees has been addressing other issues in our facilities and working on maintenance projects including: Education Wing HVAC — repairing of chemical pump & start-up of air conditioning system Chancel Spotlights — small crew finishing installation of LED bulbs Church Roof Leak — evaluating bids from contractors for repair Outreach Center Sound System — completing installation of cable & new amplifier Church Service Video Streaming — evaluating proposal from Electronic Contracting Church Basement Bathroom Remodel — subcommittee of Jackie Pope, Keith Riley & John Petersen are

researching, developing a plan and getting bids.

These projects are able to be completed because of the generosity of the Church through giving toward the General Budget, special gifts & memorial gifts. Thank you for your generous support of First UMC.
