“GOOD MORNING FAMILY”

…..thoughts from DAVID

THE CHURCH WINDOW PAGE 2

Danny Hillis is a computer engineer and inventor who thinks all types of leaders should care MORE about the long-term future. He is so committed to that end that he designed a 10,000 year clock. He explains why: “I want to build a clock that ticks once a year. The century hand advances once every 100 years, and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium. I want the cuckoo to come out every millennium for the next 10,000 years.” Danny’s motivation is building the clock is to inspire people to take more responsibility for the future. He hopes the clock will raise the question, “Are we being good ancestors?” and cause people to start projects that will outlast their lifetime. For many reasons long-range thinking is harder and harder to come by these days. Steward Brand, who is working on the same 10,000 year clock project, writes: “Civilization is revving itself into a pathologically short attention span. The trend might be coming from the acceleration of technology, the short horizon perspective of market driven economics, the next election perspective of democracies or the distractions of personal multi-tasking. All are on the increase. Some sort of balancing corrective is needed.”

It is a delicate balancing act, isn’t it. Jesus says, “Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34). James writes about making plans. He asks, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow” (James 4:14. Yet, at the same time, we cannot ne-glect the future. God has always been pointing His people forward: to a Promised Land, to a Promised Messiah, to a Promised Home. Let’s hold a proper perspective on this. We can be so invested in the future that we neglect the present, or we can be so invested in the here and now that we neglect the future. This is true in so many areas of life…including your spiritual life. Scripture encourages us to live expecting that Jesus is returning today. With that mindset, we simultaneously live in the present AND the future. We recognize the urgency of personal preparedness and leading others to Jesus. WE live in the land of NOW and NOT YET, keep our eyes and mind on Christ who will work His will in our lives today, tomorrow, and every day. Will you let Him?

Happy New Year!

LINGERING WITH LAWANIA

A while back I thought I would just stop doing “Lingerings”. I have been doing this since October, 2002 and I was having difficulty finding things to submit. Then

all of a sudden, I started finding so many that I thought would be appropriate. Well, I figured that was God's way of telling me – don't stop now! I appreciate

those of you who tell me you enjoy them, and so for you, I hope each month you'll find something in my “Lingering” to either encourage you, or make you laugh.

A WOMAN'S SOUL

A parents worst nightmare. Losing a child and having to bury them. A man lost his son and couldn't bear the thought of living without him. He was suffering and

couldn't believe his son was gone. He cried and cried every day and night, missing his son, wishing things were different.

He couldn't sleep and hadn't slept in a long time. One night an old man came to him in a dream and told him “Enough! That's enough crying!” The dad told him “I can not stop, I am never going to see him again!” The old man said “Do you want to see him again?” The dad says “yes of course” and the old man takes him to the gates of heaven where he sees many beautiful little children, so happy and inno-cent, carrying lit candles into the gates of Heaven, smiling and laughing and just so beautiful. The dad asks, “Where is my son? Who are these kids?” The old man

said “these are the children that are called home early. They are innocent and loved and they go right through to Heaven, so happy”. The dad says “and my son? Where is he? Why isn't he with these children?” The old man said “come this way”

and guided him to the side of Heaven's gate. A small boy with a beautiful smile was standing there watching all the children enter Heaven. He was standing there with a candle that was not lit. His dad grabbed him and hugged him, and the boy

kissed his dads cheeks and told him he missed him. The dad said “why isn't your candle lit like the other kids? Why are you waiting

here at the gates?” The boy said “I keep lighting it Daddy, but your tears put it out. I see you are so

sad and I am tied to that feeling so I wait here until you're ok”, the dad burst out crying. For the last time, he told his son, “light your candle and go, I will be ok,

and I know you will be too”. Don't cry too long for that loved one you lost, whether son, daughter, husband, mother or father! Let them rest in peace, don't torment your life, because they

won't come back. Have faith that you will be together again, and that the Creator makes us a beautiful home with all our loved ones when we leave this world.

Amen
