Raphael, Transfiguration (1520) We celebrate the Transfiguration on August 6, wherein God the Father reveals Jesus as his Son and as the fulfilment of the prophets .

In writing about the sacrament of Penance in last week’s bulletin, I stated that “venial” – as in venial sin – comes from the same Latin word as “vein.” Shortly after my column went out by Flocknote, I received an email from Fr. Komonchak:

In your column today you derive "venial" from "vena," Latin for "vein"; but I'm afraid that's not correct. It comes from the Latin "venia," which means "indulgence" or "pardon," "allowance made for shortcomings," etc. These meanings are quite classical, pre-Christian. So "venial" means "pardonable," meaning something like "excusable," with the danger, not always avoided, of receiving the meaning of "trivial," etc.

I am grateful to Fr. Komonchak for the correction!

In the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced that the National Shrine of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, NY is one of five holy sites and places of pilgrimage where a

Holy Door, a Door of Mercy, is opened to pilgrims who would like to receive a Jubilee Indulgence.

To receive a plenary indulgence: it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time of

the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the

state of grace: • have the interior disposition of complete

detachment from sin, even venial sin; • have sacramentally confessed their sins • receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to

receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and

• pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff

Separated and Divorced Catholics will meet on Wednesday, August 3rd at 7:00pm in the Rectory

Meeting Room. Please call Helen Piltman at 563-0604 for more information.

Come and pray the Rosary every Sunday at 7:35 a.m. before the 8:00 a.m. mass.

St. John’s Rosary Makers is looking for additional help in their ministry. They are seeking donations of

wire rosary beads. They are going to the inmates at the Orange County Jail. Please consider giving your older rosaries a new life in evangelization. They may be left

in the wooden box on the shelf in the church vestibule. If you have any questions, please call

MaryAnn Saviello at (360-5180).

Next Sunday, August 7, 2016 is food pantry

Sunday. Please be as generous as you can to help the needy of the area.

The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this appeal works to support

home mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses.

The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, because educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for

these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at

home by making a generous gift to next week’s appeal.

+ + + After a year’s hiatus, we’re resuming the tradition of a parish picnic. This year’s event is on Mon-day, September 5 (Labor Day) at Myron Urban-ski Memorial Park on Craigville Road. There will be food, games, and lots of fun! While there will be no cost this year to attend the picnic, we do need to get as accurate a count as possible of the number of parishioners attending. Thus, we’ll be taking sign-ups after the weekend Mass-es beginning in mid-August. You’ll also be able to sign up via the parish website and through Flocknote.

+ + + A few weeks ago, I wrote about Cathedral Prep, a program for young men in high school who are open to considering the priesthood. The 2016-2017 schedule is now available; it’s posted on our website and on the parish Facebook page. If you have any questions about the Prep program, please speak with Fr. Peter, Fr. Jeff, or me.

+ + + I have been holding off in sending thank you notes to those who pledged or gave to the Re-new+Rebuild capital campaign, only because new gifts and pledges continue to come in. As of this week, the total pledged stands at $1,037,455 – well past our assigned goal of $816,000. While words cannot begin to express my gratitude, those letters will be in the mail soon!

+ + + To conclude our reflection on the sacrament of Penance: Once a penitent has confessed his/her sins, the priest may offer some words of advice or coun-sel, then assign a penance. The penance is not

our way of ‘paying back’ God for his for-giveness; He’s already done that for us. Rather, the penance is a small token of our sorrow and contrition. Some people stay away from the sac-rament out of fear that the confessor may assign an enormous or even impossible penance. But a priest may not specify a penance that would be difficult to carry out. That’s why the penance is often some prayers or, perhaps, a work of chari-ty. Once the penance is assigned, the priest asks the penitent to make or say an “Act of Contrition.” This may take many different forms (the one we teach our children today is slightly different from the one I learned nearly 40 years ago, just as my parents learned a different one when they were young). Any Act of Contrition is fine, as long as it expresses three things: true sorrow for one’s sins, a desire not to commit them again, and a commitment to avoid the ‘near occasion of sin.’ The final step is absolution by the priest. There are fewer more reassuring and peace-filled pray-ers than this, so let me conclude with them:

God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Fa-ther, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

BIBLE BASICS 25: THE NEW TESTAMENT, MATTHEW AND MARK

Fr. Peter Heasley

It might seem unfair to the Christian that in treating the whole of the Bible, the New Testament gets short shrift. This is primarily due to space – I’m leaving soon – but it also reflects the reality that, for the most part, we understand the New Testament much better than the Old. There are two reasons for this: first, we spend a great deal more time with it; second, the New Testament is written in Greek by speakers of Aramaic, which is to say it is already composed in a mindset much closer to our own today.

The New Testament, for purposes of study, is generally divided into three: Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), the Johannine Corpus (the Gospel of John, his three letters, and the Book of Revelation), and the Pauline Epistles. We will treat Matthew and Mark together here, and Luke separately, since he has also composed the Acts of the Apostles.

In the 20th century and before, there was considerable scholarship devoted to the question of how much the Gospels truly tell us about Jesus, and whether or not they are indeed

composed as books at all. More recent scholarship confirms the authenticity of the gospel record, and furthermore asserts that they are true biographies in the ancient Greco-Roman form. Matthew and Mark are true gospels as true biographies.

Matthew is traditionally the first gospel written and records the witness of the apostle himself. He begins with the genealogy of Jesus, so as to show him as the long-awaited Christ, a point to which Matthew often returns in numerous quotations of the prophets.

Matthew’s gospel is built around five great discourses, which seems to refer to the model of the Pentateuch and Jesus as a new Moses. The first is Mt 5–7, the Sermon on the Mount, which includes the forms of the Beatitudes and the Our Father that we recite every day. The second, Mt 10, concerns the mission of the apostles. The third, Mt 13, is about the Kingdom of Heaven, set in parables for our understanding. Mt 18, the fourth discourse, concerns the life of the Church. Mt 23–25 constitute the Olivet Discourse, in which Our Lord Jesus speaks about the end times, his return, and judgment; this ends with the division of the just and the wicked as sheep and goats, on his right and left. The whole of the gospel ends with the great commission by Our Lord to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” the formula we still use today.

The overall nature of Mark’s gospel is brief and focused on Jesus’ action. The opening words tell us that it is the “beginning” of the gospel, a word that may also mean “digest,” or condensed version. Mark traditionally records the tradition of Saint Peter’s preaching. After an introduction to Jesus’ teaching, in Mk 8:27, with the confession of Peter, the focus is on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus: following Jesus to the cross, servant-leadership, care for the “little ones,” and abandonment of riches and worldly ambition.
