Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Samaritan Woman at the Well (ca. 1550)

To conclude our reflection on the sacrament of Penance:

Once a penitent has confessed his/her sins, the priest may offer some words of advice or counsel, then

assign a penance. The penance is not our way of ‘paying back’ God for his forgiveness; He’s already done

that for us. Rather, the penance is a small token of our sorrow and contrition. Some people stay away

from the sacrament out of fear that Father may assign an enormous or even impossible penance. But a

priest may not assign a penance that would be difficult to carry out. That’s why the penance is often

some prayers or, perhaps, a work of charity.

issues being considered in Albany. Some claim it is simply “medical assistance in dying” and not suicide. But what’s

really at stake here? Are lethal pills the most we can offer to those who find themselves suffering with a terminal illness? Join us to learn the facts as we look at the legislation and all

of its medical, legal and ethical implications. RSVP to [email protected].

St. John’s Rosary Makers are seeking donations of wire rosary beads. The are going to the inmates at the Orange

Once the penance is assigned, the priest asks the penitent to make or say an “Act of Contri-tion.” This may take many different forms (the one we teach our children today is slightly differ-ent from the one I learned 35 years ago, just as my parents learned a different one when they were young). Any Act of Contrition is fine, as long as it expresses three things: true sorrow for one’s sins, a desire not to commit them again, and a commit-ment to avoid the near occasion of sin.

The final step is absolution by the priest. There are fewer more reassuring and peace-filled words than this, so let me conclude with them:

God, the Father of mercies, has recon-ciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, a Capuchin friar, holds the title of “preacher to the papal house-hold.” Among his many excellent books is a re-cent publication, The Gaze of Mercy: A Commentary On Divine And Human Mercy. I’m going to lead a discussion group for those who are interested, be-ginning next Saturday, March 5 following the 8:00am Mass; we’ll meet on the second floor of the parish center. Everyone is welcome to partici-pate.

As first announced in this space a few weeks ago, we are going to have a holy hour of reparation this evening (Sunday) from 7:00 to 8:00pm in the church. The focus of our prayer during this time will be for victims of sexual abuse by members of the clergy.

The word “reparation” is not heard often enough today, which is unfortunate, because I believe it has a richer meaning than its synonyms, “restitution” and “compensation.” In fact, it could be defined as offering expiation for a wrong or injury done to another. The ultimate “expiatory sacrifice” is that which Christ made for us, and in which we participate every time we celebrate the Eucharist. This hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, then, is itself a small sacrifice to make.

There is much I could write on the topic of clergy sexual abuse, but I never have, probably because there’s been much already written about it. So, rather than add to that, it’s simply better, especially given our parish’s history, that I pray – that we pray – for those who are victims, whether directly or indirectly.

Faithfully your priest,

Fr. George Hafemann

BIBLE BASICS 3: THE LAW

Fr. Peter Heasley

As we saw three weeks ago, the Old Testament is divided into three major sections: the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. Now, we will look more closely at the first major division of the Old Testament, the Law.

By “Law,” we understand the story of the giving of the Law by Mo-ses and the receiving of the Law by Israel. This story covers several centu-ries – indeed, a millennium or more of human history, not counting the sto-ry of creation. In general, we could consider two basic divisions of this sto-ry: the Pentateuch or Torah, and the Historical Books.

The Law is one continuous story, the story of the giving of the law. This story begins with creation and continues through the patriarchs – Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – and culminates in the giving of the law through Moses on Mount Sinai, and it ends with the rediscovery of the law under the reforms of the kings Hezekiah and Josiah in the 7th century BC and the subsequent exile to Babylon.

Here is a breakdown of the story, by book and chapter:

Genesis 1–11: the Prehistory of the World: Creation, Fall, and Flood or, why we exist and why the world is the way it is (Big Bang to ca. 1850 BC) Genesis 12–50: the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob or, how the Israelites got to Egypt (ca. 1850 – 1250 BC) Exodus 1–18: the Exodus from Egypt or, how the Israelites got out of Egypt (ca. 1250 BC) Exodus 19 – Numbers 10: the Covenant at Sinai or, how God gave the law to Moses, and what it contains (ca. 1250 BC) Numbers 10–36: from Sinai to the Plains of Moab or, the rest of the forty year journey, and why it took that long (ca. 1250 – 1210 BC) Deuteronomy 1–34: Moses’ Last Words or, a reiteration of the law and a second giving of the covenant (ca. 1210 BC) Joshua – Judges: the Settling of the Land or, how God wiped out everyone before the Israelites, who nevertheless ignored him (ca. 1210 – 1030 BC) I and II Samuel: the Rise of the Monarchy or, how and why Israel got a king, in Saul and David (ca. 1030 – 970 BC) I and II Kings: the Kings from Solomon to Jehoiakin or, how those kings ignored God and led Israel into exile (970 – 586 BC) I and II Chronicles: from Creation to Solomon the Temple Builder (Creation—970 BC) Ezra and Nehemiah: Rebuilders of the Temple and of Jerusalem (5th Century BC)
