MINISTRY OF THE WORD
1st Lesson: Job 38:1-7 Ms. Leyra Scantlebury
The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: ‘Who is this that darkens counsel by words
without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall
declare to me. ‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you
have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who
stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
This is the word of the Lord
ALL : Thanks be to God

Psalm 104:1-9, 25 (Congregation remain seated) Page 602 BCP
1. Hold not your tongue, O God of my praise; * for the mouth of the wicked, the mouth of the deceitful, is opened against me.
2. They speak to me with a lying tongue; * they encompass me with hateful words and fight against me without a cause.
3. Despite my love, they accuse me; * but as for me, I pray for them.
4. They repay evil for good, * and hatred for my love.
5. Set a wicked man against him, *and let an accuser stand at his right hand.
6. When he is judged, let him be found guilty, * and let his appeal be in vain.
7. Let his days be few, * and let another take his office.
8. Let his children be fatherless, * and his wife become a widow.
9. Let his children be waifs and beggars; * let them be driven from the ruins of their homes.
25 Help me, O LORD my God; * save me for your mercy's sake.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:* and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now* and ever shall be, world without end Amen
2ND Lesson: Hebrews 5: 1-10 Mr.Stephen Brathwaite
Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to
God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with
the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this
he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does
not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron
was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed
by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’; as he says
also in another place, ‘You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and
6
tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his
reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he
suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for
all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of
Melchizedek.
This is the word of the Lord
ALL : Thanks be to God
Gradual Hymn: He who would valiant be
1. Who would valiant be 'against all disaster, let him in constancy follow the Master. There's no discouragement shall make him once relent his first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.
2. Who so beset him round with dismal stories, do but themselves confound--his strength the more is. No foes shall stay his might, though he with giants fight; he will make good his right to be a pilgrim.
. .(Last verse (3) will be sung after the Gospel)
The Gospel: Mark 10: 35-45 (congregation remain standing for the Gospel)
PRIEST: The Lord be with you
ALL: And also with you
PRIEST: The Holy Gospel according to Mark Chapter 10, beginning to read at the
35th verse
ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, ‘Teacher,
we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.’ And he said to them, ‘What is it you
want me to do for you?’ And they said to him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at your right hand
7
and one at your left, in your glory.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you
are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism
that I am baptized with?’ They replied, ‘We are able.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘The cup
that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be
baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those
for whom it has been prepared.’ When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with
James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, ‘You know that among the
Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great
ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become
great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you
must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give
his life a ransom for many.’
PRIEST : The Gospel of Christ
ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord
Gradual Hymn: He who would valiant be (Final verse)
3. Since, Lord, Thou dost defend us with Thy Spirit we know we at the end shall life inherit. Then, fancies, flee away! I'll fear not what men say, I'll labor night and day to be a pilgrim.
THE SERMON:
Reflection: Open our eyes, Lord
Open our eyes Lord,
we want to see Jesus…
To reach out and touch him,
and say that we love him.
Open our ears Lord,
and help us to listen.
8
Open our eyes Lord,
we want to see Jesus
Open our hearts Lord,
we pray for your mercy…
Come into our hearts Lord,
And fill us with your love.
We’ll tell of your goodness
And always sing praises…
Oh, open our hearts Lord,
we want to show Jesus.

The Nicene Creed Page 104
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is seen or unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered, died and was buried.
9
On the third day he rose again
in fulfilment of the Scriptures;
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead.
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

PRESIDENT
Sovereign Lord and Father,
To you be glory and praise for ever.
17
In your boundless wisdom
you brought creation into being;
In your great love you fashioned
us in your image
In your tender compassion
you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour,
to share our human nature;
In the power of the Holy Spirit,
He overcame the power of sin and death
and brought your people to new birth
as first fruits of your new creation.
On the night that He was betrayed
He took bread,
and when He had given thanks to you,
He broke it and gave it to his disciples
and said: "Take this, and eat it:
This is my Body which is given for you,
Do this for the remembrance of me."
And after supper
He took the cup of wine:
and when He had given thanks,
He gave it to them and said:
"Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the New Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it,
do this for the remembrance of me."

and unending life, may your Holy Spirit
establish us as a royal priesthood
with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. N-

in your eternal inheritance;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
With Him and in Him and through Him,

During the singing of the Communion Hymns, we invite to the Lord’s Table all those
persons who are communicant members in this church and in their respective churches.
“Please remember to place your arms across your chest if you are taking communion by

21
Communion Hymn: CH 538 O thou who camest from above
1. THOU Who camest from above The fire celestial to impart, Kindle a flame of sacred love On the mean altar of my heart.
2. There let it for Thy glory burn With inextinguishable blaze, And trembling to its source return In humble prayer, and fervent praise.
3. Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire To work, and speak, and think for Thee; Still let me guard the holy fire And still stir up the gift in me.
4. Still let me prove Thy perfect will, My acts of faith and love repeat; Till death Thy endless mercies seal,
And make the sacrifice complete
Communion Hymn 293 Spirit of God descend upon my heart
1. Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
draw it from earth; through all its pulses move;
stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art,
and make me love thee as I ought to love.
2. I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away.
3. Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
22
4. Teach me to love thee as thine angels love. One holy passion filling all my frame; the kindling of the heaven-descended dove, my heart an altar, and thy love the flame.
Communion Hymn 119 Lord Jesus think on me
1. Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin; from earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within.
2. Lord Jesus, think on me, with many a care opprest; let me thy loving servant be, and taste thy promised rest.
3. Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through darkness and perplexity point thou the heavenly way.
4. Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past, I may the eternal brightness see, and share thy joy at last.
Communion Hymn CH 281 Lord God the Holy Ghost
1. Lord God the Holy Ghost, in this accepted hour, as on the day of Pentecost, descend in all thy power.
2. We meet with one accord in our appointed place,
23
and wait the promise of our Lord, the Spirit of all grace.
3. Like mighty rushing wind upon the waves beneath, move with one impulse every mind, one soul, one feeling, breathe:
4. The young, the old inspire with wisdom from above; and give us hearts and tongues of fire, to pray and praise and love.
5. Spirit of light, explore, and chase our gloom away, with luster shining more and more unto the perfect day.
6. Spirit of truth, be thou in life and death our Guide; O Spirit of adoption, now may we be sanctified.
During the singing of the next hymn, all children who are not confirmed are invited to the
Altar for a Blessing.
Hymn for the Blessing & Recommitment: CH 664 Loving Shepherd of thy sheep
1. Loving Shepherd of thy sheep, keep thy lamb, in safety keep; nothing can thy power withstand, none can pluck me from thy hand.
2. Loving Saviour, thou didst give thine own life that we might live, and the hands outstretched to bless bear the cruel nails’ impress.
24
3. I would praise thee every day, gladly all thy will obey, like thy blessèd ones above happy in thy precious love.
4. Loving Shepherd, ever near, teach thy Lamb thy voice to hear, suffer not my steps to stray from the straight and narrow way.
5. Where thou leadest I would go, walking in thy steps below, till before my Father’s throne I shall know as I am known.
Post Communion Prayer: Page 147/148

2. Jesus! The name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; ‘tis music in the sinner’s ears, ‘tis life and health and peace.
3. He speaks; and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive, the mournful broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe.
4. Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, your loosened tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Saviour come; and leap, ye lame, for joy!
5. My gracious master and my God, assist me to proclaim and spread through all the earth abroad the honours of thy name.

What is prayer?
Has this question ever crossed your mind? Is it the words that we say or the mere act of saying the words? The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines prayer as “a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or another deity.” I have also heard that prayer is the language used to communicate with God. These are certainly very good descriptions. However, I would like to suggest that prayer is also a state of being.
Prayer is a place of absolute obedience, where we submit to the will of God. Prayer is a place where we abandon all our human pride, adopt humility and recognise that we are totally dependent on God. It is no coincidence that the one of first things in the Lord’s Prayer is the acknowledgement that God’s will is supreme.
