From the Moderator…
“Know Your Church and Where You Fit”
We all know that you don’t
have to be ordained to be a
‘minister’. When you minister
to someone, you attend to and
take care of them. When you
participate on a Committee,
Board or Group here at ECC,
you are ministering to your
church. The ways to do that is
nearly endless.

(Continued from page 1)
“Know Your Church and Where You Fit”
Each month we have been featuring one Committee,
Board or Group within the church as a means of
introduction to ‘who they are and what they do’. So
far we have learned about Prudential, Christian Growth
and Nurture, Stewardship, Memorial and the Music
committees. This month we will learn more about
Diaconate and the important ministry they provide to
us. Because Ellington Congregational Church is such
an active and vibrant church, it will take nearly TWO
YEARS to introduce all the individual Committees,
Boards and Groups to you! Think about that. The
upside is we have so much going on that it will take
two years to tell you all about every group and
everything going on here at church. The downside is
that you may not hear about that one place where you
would ‘Fit’ best for a long time.
So that you don’t have to wait two years to find your
Fit at ECC, the Prudential Committee is hosting a
“Ministry Fair” on October 16th in the Social Room
following each service. No need to wait to hear about
Missions (Jan), Board of Christian Education (Feb) or
Women’s Fellowship (Mar) and all the other groups
we have scheduled in the coming months. All the
Committees, Boards and Groups will be represented at
the Ministry Fair.
Please join us in the Social Room on October 16th to
Know (more about) Your Church and Where You
Fit in your own ministry to ECC.
See you there!
Marsha
CHURCH OFFICE
NEWS
The Church Office will be
CLOSED on October 10th and 11th.
Please check the weekly Sunday bulletin
announcements for any changes/updates to the weekly
schedule as it is subject to change.
WHY WOULD I JOIN A COMMITTEE…if I don’t
know what the Committee does? Well, most people
wouldn’t, and there lies the basis of ECC’s new
initiative for 2016 and beyond:
“Know Your Church and Where You Fit”
(each month the Caller will introduce you to another
committee, then that committee will host Fellowship
on an assigned Sunday, stop by and meet the
committees)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
After several years of being "in charge" of the dining
room at ECC's Winterfest dinner, it is time for me to
step down. The opportunity consists of securing dining
room staff - wait and bus staff, hostess, and two
cashiers, helping set up the dining room, overseeing all
the volunteers during the dinner, and interfacing with
Scott Noble (who handles securing the cash) and a
point person designated in the kitchen.
I have a manual for the dinner, complete with names
and phone numbers, photographs of how the tables are
to be set up, a stack of menus and wait staff forms,
etc. It is a very "short" time limited opportunity - a
couple of weeks calling to secure volunteers, and about
4 - 5 hours on the evening of the dinner. Please
contact me if this is something you would be willing to
take on. You can reach me at 860-214-5315.
Blessings, Marcia Hesse

Prayer Shawl Ministry The next meeting of the prayer shawl ministry is
Thursday, October 27th at 9:30 a.m. in the social room. If
you would like the easy basic pattern or would like to
borrow pattern books, please call Jan at 860-875-1543.
In the room off of the Narthex, we have added a larger
container with shawls and also a container for lap robes
which should be helpful with the chilly weather of the
season.
There is also a container with a couple of pink or pink
tone shawls, as well as some pink pocket prayers, for the
breast cancer awareness month of October. Please help
yourself.
Friendship Class Tuesday, October 4th at 1:00 pm
Continuing on with the book discussion of The Faith
Club, the Friendship Class will discuss Judaism and
Priscilla’s beliefs on faith and religion on October 4th
at 1:00 pm.
The discussion last month on Ranya’s beliefs on Islam
was very lively. Join the group in October to compare
Islam and Judaism. Virginia Dzen will facilitate.
NOTES FROM GROWTH
AND NURTURE
REMINDER: Please be sure to wear
your name tag. The name tags help
make our church more welcoming
and are a small offering of Christian
hospitality. If you need a new one, there is a form to
request a name tag in the Narthex or call the Church
Office. Thanks!
Sacred Stitches Ministry
provides instructions and supplies and
meets on the second Monday of each
month (10/10) in the social room from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring a bag lunch and
your sewing kit and join us for a day of relaxed
sewing and fellowship. If you have questions, please
call Peg Doffek, 860-454-7360 or Judy White, 860-
875-6642.
Did you miss the display
in the Social Room on Sept.
18th? The Historians moved the
history memorabilia about the
churches to a showcase at the
Hall Memorial Library. It is
located in the section between the old part and the new.
This display will be there from now till the end of
October.

From the Historian
You probably noticed that we dedicated our 100th
Anniversary of the Fourth Meeting House Booklet to
Nellie E. McKnight who was our first historian. John
T. McKnight, secretary of the Building Committee
1915-1916, was Nellie’s uncle. He also had a sister
named Nellie. Our Nellie was named after her.
We found this document “In Memoriam” in our
archives:
Nellie E. McKnight 1894-1981
Photo courtesy of the Ellington Historical Society
“Strength and dignity are her clothing. She opens her
mouth with wisdom, and teaching of kindness is on her
tongue.” Proverbs 31:25
Nellie McKnight lived and labored among us as a
servant of the Lord, here in Ellington. The record
indicates that she joined the Ellington Congregational
Church in 1909. She served her church faithfully;
sharing her dedicated spirit in the positions of
Deaconess, Librarian, Historian, Clerk, and friend to
all.
We will miss her special charm; the warm twinkle
of her eyes when she spoke. We will miss seeing her at
her librarian post each Sunday morning, assisting
people to find a book to read. We will miss the
wonderful bits of information that she shared with us
as historian, reminding us of the importance of our
heritage and of those whose lives helped to build our
church. As we pass by her home, we will miss the
familiar sight of Nellie lovingly tending her garden.
We always felt secure in the knowledge that, like a
loving mother, she was keeping an eye on us.
We will remember Nellie McKnight as we gaze
upon the lovely summer flowers in our Sanctuary, or
the autumn arrangement at Thanksgiving. We will
remember her as we gather to carry on the work of our
church. We will remember her as we come together to
worship God. Although she will be gone from our sight, Nellie
McKnight will not be gone from our midst. She is part
of us, and that will always remain.
Nellie, we thank you for living and sharing among
us, the spirit of Jesus Christ that so wonderfully
enriched your life, and in turn, made our lives joyous
and full.
I remember Nellie at the Farmhouse Fair selling
brooms. I still have the one I bought so many years
ago. She was also the keeper of the church key. When
you needed to get into the church, you would go to
Nellie’s house which is next to our church now, the
Nellie McKnight Museum. Just knock on the back
door and she would give you the key. Nellie was never
without her sweet disposition and a smile on her face.
I thought you would enjoy seeing Nellie in her younger
days.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
We've learned from listening to our members that sharing our time and talents and treasure with the church
makes us feel good. It gives us joy when we express our faith by supporting out pastors, their vibrant ministries,
our youth programs, and the wonderful music that enriches our worship every week.
Our theme for this year's campaign, as for last year, is The Joy of Generosity. We've been having fun with this
by showing a series of cartoons, like the one above.
To be sure, our church's finances are no laughing matter. This is why we ask that you prayerfully examine your
giving. Has the benefit of your church experiences grown and can your pledge grow with it? If we each
increased our pledges by just $5 a week, the additional $50,000 income would provide:
Well-deserved salary increases for our pastors and staff
Reduced reliance on endowment funds to balance our budget
More resources to help those in need here in Ellington and beyond
Needed repairs to our building
and more
“…for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9.6
Being part of this wonderful church means that each of us has an opportunity and a responsibility to share. Your
2017 Pledge Card will be available for pick-up on Stewardship Sunday, October 30th, before and/or after both
services. Your faithful commitment of support by pledging will enable our programs and ministries to grow.
Please complete your card after taking time to reflect on your gratitude for the love of this church, the many
blessings you have received, and the joy you feel when the offering plate reaches your pew.
Please bring your completed Pledge Card to worship on Consecration Sunday, November 13th, or mail it to the
church in the enclosed envelope.
Yours in Christ,
The Stewardship Committee

THE FARMHOUSE FAIR
CRAFTS and FOOD
The 55th Farmhouse Fair is coming…
Friday, November 4th 5:00 - 8:00pm
Saturday, November 5th 9:00am - 2:00pm
Here is a list of all the rooms at the fair and the contact person for each room. If you need or want more
information about any room, or have a craft that you think would fit one of these rooms, contact the person
listed.
Farmhouse Café - Joann Scott: 860-454-4189, will be chairing the kitchen.
Pantry - We are looking forward to lots of yummy goodies being baked for the Pantry table! The most popular
item is always PIES! PIES! PIES! Other items that sell well include coffee cakes; quick breads such as
pumpkin, banana, apple or any other different flavors and yeast breads. PLEASE WRAP BAKED GOODS IN
CLEAR PLASTIC WRAP OR PLACE IN CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS. When you bring items to the table there
will be labels for you to use to mark what items are -- it is particularly important to know if an item has nuts.
Thanks in advance for making our Pantry a success again this year. Laurie Hazleton: 860-878-9223,
Raggedy Ann and Andy - Andy and Ann are ready for the fair. But they always need help with donations of
fabric that is in good condition with small print. Also, help is always needed in assembling the dolls - sewing,
attaching hair, stuffing and embroidery. Penny Gates: 860-749-5293 and Dianne Durgan: 860-872-6090
The Doll Corner - Clothes for 18-inch dolls will be a great seller as usual. We always welcome knitters and
those who enjoy sewing. Jan Danforth: 860-432-2808
Cookies In a Can – Cookies galore! What a delicious assortment we had last year and the cookies sold out
early so please bake a few more. If you haven't baked in the past or you are a new member your contribution is
always welcome. Marcia Hesse: 860-214-5315
Christmas Décor - Many Christmas theme items will be available. Debby Wallace: 860-872-0106
Fabulous Fibers - We look forward to a successful room again this year and welcome all your contributions.
All contributions can be placed in the "red box" outside the Social Room and I will pick them up each Sunday.
If you are thinking of starting a new project, we can use donations of handmade baby things (including blankets
and clothing); hand created adult and child sized sweaters, mittens, socks, and hats; and hand crafted household
items (including wash cloths, afghans, blankets, and lap robes); or anything else you think would sell well. If
anyone needs ideas, patterns, or supplies, please call me. Thank you so much for your time and effort. Carolyn
Bunick: 860-871-8689
Kids Korner - The “Kids Korner” is looking for donations of gift items that children under 13 can purchase for
their parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, etc. Items can be dropped off in the red Fair Bin (please mark it
for Kids Room) or call Beth for pick-up. Thank you! Beth Cocuzzo: 860-872-2918

We welcome all “seasonal” items and decorations, especially some for “other” seasons, e.g. St. Patrick’s Day,
