The Church Bell Salem Lutheran Church PO Box 136, Longville, MN 56655 Volume 36, Issue 3 Pastor Trisha Jorgenson March 2016 EASTER JOY! Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.Romans 6:3-4 March 27 th is Easter Sunday – the most important Sunday and holiday of the church year. It marks the time of our Lords resurrection from the dead. It also marks the time of our resurrection from the season of Lent – a time of contemplation of our sinfulness and Christs atonement for our sin. Sin is the human condition of separation from God that arises from opposition to Gods purposes. It may be breaking Gods law, failing to do what God wills, or rebellion, says Donald K. McKim, an American Presbyterian theologian and editor. We learn in Genesis 3, the consequence of sin is death, but we dont really need to think terribly hard to see that this is true. When we hurt a friend, betray a spouse, speak derogatory words toward someone, or allow jealousy to seep into any type of relationship, we quickly experience the emotional, spiritual and even physical death that comes with our sinful choices. Through baptism, Jesus joins us to his death – burying our sin in his dying so that we may also be raised to new life – through his resurrection. For Jesus, this was a one- time eventyet its benefits and dare I say its reality are an on-going event reaching far into the future and beyond. Even as we proclaim one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, which is a one-time eventwe also recognize the need to remember Gods grace and work in our baptism on a daily basis, which is an on-going event. This daily dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ is both wonderful and challenging. So we gather each Sunday morning – like little Easters – to be encouraged by the Word of God, strengthened in the Lords Supper, forgiven and embraced in love by our brothers and sisters in Christ. Easter Sunday is the day we pull out all the stopsand celebrate with instruments and voices, loud hosannas, and He is risens,Gods gift of love and life given freely through our Lords death and resurrection. No matter where you are in your baptismal journey you are welcome here and we invite you to join us this Easter Sunday as we worship the One who sets us free to live in the power and the truth of the empty tomb. Easter Joy in Christ Jesus our Lord, Pastor Trish

EASTER JOY!

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

so we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:3-4 March 27th is Easter Sunday – the most important Sunday and holiday of the church year. It marks the time of our Lord’s resurrection from the dead. It also marks the time of our resurrection from the season of Lent – a time of contemplation of our sinfulness and Christ’s atonement for our sin. “Sin is the human condition of separation from God that arises from opposition to God’s purposes. It may be breaking God’s law, failing to do what God wills, or rebellion,” says Donald K. McKim, an American Presbyterian theologian and editor. We learn in Genesis 3, the consequence of sin is death, but we don’t really need to think terribly hard to see that this is true. For Jesus, this was a one-time event…yet its benefits and dare I say its reality are an on-going event reaching far into the future and beyond. Even as we proclaim one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, which is a one-time event…we also recognize the need to remember God’s grace and work in our baptism on a daily basis, which is an on-going event. This daily dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ is both wonderful and challenging. So we gather each Sunday morning – like little Easters – to be encouraged by the Word of God, strengthened in the Lord’s Supper, forgiven and embraced in love by our brothers and sisters in Christ. Easter Sunday is the day we ‘pull out all the stops’ and celebrate with instruments and voices, loud “hosannas,” and “He is risen’s,” God’s gift of love and life given freely through our Lord’s death and resurrection. No matter where you are in your baptismal journey you are welcome here and we invite you to join us this Easter Sunday as we worship the One who sets us free to live in the power and the truth of the empty tomb. Stewardship in Daily Life By Lynn C. Miller

www.covenanttrust.com/legacyplanning/stewardshipdailylife.aspx

Martin Luther summarized stewardship like this: “I have held many things in my hands and I have lost them all. But whatever I have placed in God’s hands that I still possess.” For Christians, stewardship should be a way of life. It applies to time and the talents God has given, as well as to money and possessions. Stewardship includes: time management

doing everything possible to stay in good health caring for the environment money management current charitable gifts legacy charitable gifts

Some say the church talks a great deal about money. That’s because money and possessions play such a large part in our life. How we handle money is a good barometer of our relationship with God. Billy Graham has said, “A check-book is a theological document—it tells you who and what you worship.” …

“Stewardship is the act of organizing your life so that God can spend you."

March Food Share

Friends, the 2016 Campaign starts March 1st. We are once again asking congregations in our area to join in the effort to support

our local food shelf during the month of March.

Many in our community - elderly, children, friends and neighbors - continue to suffer from hunger and food insecurity. Your contributions - no matter the size -

help us to wage the war against hunger.

This is the perfect time to donate to the food shelf. During the month of March, we are able to stretch your donation by leveraging additional dollars from Minnesota Food Share. This increases our purchasing power

even more! We also take part in the Feinstein Incentive Foundation during March and April to receive extra monies.

The Longville Food Shelf budget is $52,000 dollars for food costs in 2016. The majority of this money comes to us in the March Campaign. Remember - every dollar you donate is spent on food purchases!

All overhead costs (heat, electricity, phone, etc.) are covered by proceeds from Tossed & Found Boutique. Please send donations to:

Longville Area Food Shelf PO Box 308

Longville, MN 56655

We remain grateful for your compassion and continued support.
