Programs
Lastweek’smeeting
Last week’s meeting was moved from Tuesday to Thursday to accommodate the District
Foundation Roadshow which the RC Croydon was asked to organise and host. The meeting
was for all clubs in the Eastern and Northern clusters.
PDG John Barnes, District Foundation Chairman, chaired the meeting which had an
attendance of 182, which was a great result considering 120 was the muted figure.
The idea of the meeting was to highlight some of The Rotary Foundation programs by asking
participants to speak rather than an information night. It also proved to be a successful
approach.
The first speaker was Mathew Ford a former Peace Scholar who spoke about his life after
peace and conflict resolution studies and where it has taken him.
The next speaker was Linda MacKenzie from – Rotary Club of Templestowe who spoke about
not one, but two District Simplified Grants which were used to assist clients of Odyssey House
and improve kitchen facilities there for their use.
Linda was followed by Liz Tarquinio a Group Study Exchange team member who went to
District 5790 in Texas. Liz was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Box hill. She is a Police Officer
in the Whitehorse area and specialises in youth programs through Victoria Police. Liz admitted
that she could not figure out why she was chosen as she believed she did not have the
confidence, or the personality required by Rotary. She is very grateful for the opportunity and
in the short time she has been involved in the program she has developed confidence and
come out of her shell. Linda gave a very good presentation and will certainly be in demand
from clubs looking for a speaker.
Next speaker was PP Liz Guiver from Rotary Club Warrandyte/Donvale who spoke about a
Matching Grant benefiting disadvantaged children in Thailand. The project is based around
assistance for families of HIV/Aids sufferers and helping them live as a family and yet cope
with the illness of their loved ones.
The final speaker was PRIT (Past Rotary International Treasurer) and Trustee of the Rotary
Foundation Ian Riseley. We are fortunate to have a Trustee of the Rotary Foundation in the
District who can address meeting about the workings etc of the Foundation. Ian chose to
focus on Polio Plus and informed the meeting that we are virtually within striking distance of
our aim in 1985 to eradicate polio. There are now only 3 countries which have reported cases
of polio and the number of new cases reported this year to 7th August has been 111.
Compared with 365 last year and 375,000 in 1985 it shows how far we have come.
The belief is that our aim will be reached in 3 or 4 years time. There is still a need for around
$600m so we cannot afford to relax.
The proceeds of the night’s raffle for Polio Plus raised well over $600.

President’s ReportMeeting of Thursday August 16, 2012.
District 9810 Foundation Cluster Meeting
Approximately 180 Rotarians from the Northern and Eastern Clusters of District 9810 gathered at Dorset
Gardens Hotel for the Foundation Road Show. PDG John Barnes chaired the meeting and was ably
assisted by a number of speakers who spoke on Foundation programs including Matching Grants, District
Simplified Grants, Group Study Exchange, Peace Scholarships, Polio eradication and the Centurion Club.
In my opinion it was a great evening and I am certain that those who were able to attended were rewarded
for their time. A special thank you to Brian McDaid who attended to all the arrangements for the evening on
behalf of the Club.
Meeting Tuesday September 4, 2012
During this Rotary Year we plan to have a number of representatives from local businesses come to
meetings as guest speakers. The reasoning for asking local businesses to come to Rotary is many fold but
includes building relationships between our Club and local businesses, joint community service projects,
possible new members etc. On Tuesday September 4 we will have a representative from ARB as our guest
speaker. ARB is a local success story from humble beginnings in a garage to a company that now employs
700 staff. I am told that the company’s first employee is still working with the company.
I urge you to come to this meeting to hear a business success story. Why not bring along a friend or
neighbour. Anyone interested in the “great outdoors’ will at least know of ARB. If they own a 4x4 or a
caravan they will probably own an ARB product.
District Simplified Grants
It is that time of the Rotary year when Clubs can apply to District for a District Simplified Grant (DSG). Over
the past 5 years our Club has applied for and received 5 DSG’s. All DSG’s have been gone towards
Literacy Programs at local Primary Schools, the most recent being Ruskin Park Primary School.
DSG should be used in one of the major areas of concern as selected by Rotary International these include
Literacy, Clean Water, Health, Peace, Community Development.
The District has $22,000 available to DSG applications during 2012-2013. District 9810 will match 50 cents
for each Dollar contributed by the Club up to a maximum of $2,000.
The Club needs you ideas and suggestions for DSG projects. Please do not leave it all to me. The Club has
decided not to pursue Literacy this year therefore we need fresh ideas. Act now as this year DSG funds will
be awarded on a first come first served basis.
Partner’s Night Tuesday August 21, 2012
The redevelopment of the Croydon Market is the subject for this Partner’s Night. This is a topic in which all
Croydon residents should have an interest. Why not use this meeting as an opportunity to invite you
neighbours and friends to learn from our guest speaker someone very close to the redevelopment of the
Croydon Market and to enjoy a night at a Croydon Rotary meeting. Let us think and act a little outside the
square after all we are a Community Service organisation and this is a subject of community interest.
Ross Taylor.
