Angels' Army is a Jesus Youth initiative intended to guide small children to grow in loving relationship with God right from the early days. It also gives tips to the parents to bring them up in holiness right from the moment of conception. Pregnancy is a period when mothers should be in total prayer and God reliance. During this time, whatever the mother goes through, will be transferred to the child too. For this very reason it is very essential that parents be in the fullness of God's love, during pregnancy period. Angels' Army provides precious help for this.

Elizabeth Ann Bailey was born on August 28, 1774 in New York. Her parents were Richard and Catherine Bailey, b o t h m e m b e r s o f t h e Episcopal Church. Having lost her mother when she was just three years old, Elizabeth shared a special bond with her father, who was a doctor. She was deeply touched by the compassion that her father showed to the patients under his care. Her stepmother, who walked later into her life, encouraged her to pray and study the Word of God, thus empowering her to grow in faith and virtues. By the time she turned 20, she was the most beautiful girl in New York. She married William

Magee Seton, a wealthy businessman of noble birth. They had a joyful marriage and led an exemplary married life in which they were blessed w i t h 2 s o n s a n d 3 daughters.

Through most of their married life, William Seton suffered f rom tuberculosis. To help him with his recovery, they moved to Italy but soon the family business fell apart and they became bankrupt. Finally in 1803, William died in Elizabeth's arms, leaving the family in deep financial crisis. Elizabeth who soon became attracted to this faith, joined the Catholic Church. Because of this, she was rejected by her friends and family, but she moved on with her life, placing her trust in God, even in the midst of great suffering and adversities. She had a deep devotion to the E u c h a r i s t , S a c r e d Scripture and the Virgin Mary.

In order to support her

family, Elizabeth started an academy for young girls, the first of its kind in the US. In the following months, she established a religious community for women. With five women joining her with the intention of leading a consecrated life, this congregation came to be known as "Sisters of Charity of St.Joseph". They opened schools, orphanages and hospitals in various parishes; they paved the way for women to serve the world that was waiting for them. They started teaching in schools and serving in orphanages, hospitals and even in military camps.

Before going to bed, he prayed "My Jesus, please ease my pain and let me sleep well." After a while, I saw him sleeping peacefully, but the next morning his ear started aching again and I took him to his doctor. The doctor said that he had an ear infection and prescribed him some antibiotics. Later that evening his throat started hurting, and when he took a glass of hot tea to relieve the pain, it spilled on him and burnt his leg. I reached home from work, and applied honey and anti burn ointment on his leg. When I saw that the skin had come off from the burnt area, I started crying and my tears fell on him. Then, he said to me, “Mom, why are you crying?, Jesus gave me this suffering because He loves me dearly.” I was

One day an old man bought a parrot. He wanted the parrot to talk to him and spent a lot of time trying to teach it to talk. However he had no luck, and the parrot did not utter a single word. Finally he gave up and continued with his daily chores.

Evening came and darkness set in. Church bells rang; and our old man was not a man of prayer. He had forgotten all the prayers that he had learnt as a young boy. But as soon as the church bells rang, there came a sound from the parrot cage! The parrot was praying! It had come from a family who prayed regularly, because of which the parrot had learnt 'The Angelus prayer'. The old man was ashamed of himself. He decided to visit the church which he had abandoned long ago. Thus a little parrot taught an old man to pray and to go to church.

But was the parrot actually praying? Does it have a heart and mind to lift unto the Lord?

Don't we sometimes pray like a parrot? At times we don't focus or think about what we are praying, but let our minds wander. We just keep repeating the words, till the prayer is over. But our God wants us to pray with diligence. Five words said thoughtfully is worth much more than a thousand words said thoughtlessly. We must guard our senses, and raise our hearts and minds to the Lord; only then will our prayers be fruitful. If distractions persist, ask our Lord to help us focus on Him. Let us begin the new year with the resolution to pray diligently.

-A Parrot's prayer

Family prayer is Holy Mass at home.

It is a great way to nurture our family's faith.

Every member of the family should participate from beginning till the end.

It is better to take a shower and be fresh before prayer time.

Just like we have a fixed time for Holy Mass at Church, there should also be a fixed time for family prayer.

Please make sure not to do any other work during prayer time.

amazed at his words. Later I took him to the hospital for an examination. When we reached home, his leg was still burning with pain and I wondered if my child would be able to sleep that night, but he did, and I could feel the Lord's presence with him.

After three days, seeing that the burnt area still looked pretty bad, I took him to a plastic surgeon. He wiped my son's burnt leg and applied some ointment on it. The pain was excruciating, yet he looked at me and said "It's just like demolishing a building with a JCB, right Mom?" While in pain, he clutched the crucifix on his Rosary tight and wept silently. I was praying the

Rosary throughout the p r o c e d u r e , a t t h e hospital. They dressed his leg from his thigh to the knee. We were told that the bandage could be removed after 8 days. I was worried that the wound might become infected if it is not exposed, but my son comforted me with these words “Why are you worried Mom? Jesus, Mother Mary and St. Joseph are with us.” When the bandage was removed on the 8th day, the wound had completely healed. During those days, we had also been praying for all those suffering from serious burns. We firmly believe that the Lord is b l e s s ing our f ami ly abundantly.

Experience:

I have always dreamed of becoming a teacher, who could win the hearts of students through love. My prayer was to help me be a fine teacher who could balance mercy and discipline in the right measure for each student. I encouraged my students to share their troubles with me and I tried to comfort them in my own little ways. My students were offered up in every Holy Mass and Rosary to Jesus and to the blessed mother Mary.

The following incident occurred while I was teaching my third batch. One of my students was caught for cheating in exams. I was the proctor in the adjacent class and was greatly disturbed, to see the boy walk out of his class with a gloomy face. He was my favourite student; a well behaved boy in class. I went on with my work, however I was a little upset with the blessed mother. I

questioned her saying, “Mother, didn't I pray for all my students today, asking you to protect them from all evil? Why did you not keep this child, safe under your blue mantle?” I didn't want to face him that day and tried to stay away from him. As I was going down the stairs from the teacher's lounge, I saw him standing near the rails. Now I had to face him. I was worried, wondering what to say to this troubled child. My eyes fell on the Rosary around his neck and I asked him "Were you cheating with a Rosary on? Do you have any idea how much grief our Blessed Mother would be in right now? Don't repeat this, son.""I will never do it again, teacher", he replied with teary eyes. I knew that this child had only his mother at home. I prayed intently for him during those days. Time went by and I had forgotten the incident.

Many years later, I received news that the same boy, through his academic br i l l iance, had gained national attention. My heart

greatly rejoiced. After ten years, there was a reunion of his class, as well as all the teachers that had taught them. Everyone shared their beautiful memories of the old days at school. When it was the boy's turn to speak, he brought up the cheating incident causing me to recollect my own memory of the situation. He said that my words, “wearing the rosary” and “cheating”, had struck him hard and made him think about what he had done. He stated that ever since that day he has never cheated in his life. Whenever he felt like cheating, my words came into his mind. He said that he would prefer to fail than to win by cheating. My eyes overflowed with tears of joy! At that very moment, I clutched my rosary tight and thanked our blessed mother.

My dear teachers, God has placed our students in our care. Let us strive to touch and know their minds and help them grow in virtues. Our prayers and sacrifices for them will never go in vain.

“Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8) We live in Thankamani, in the district of Idukki in Kerala. With

the love of a living God glistening before our eyes, this experience we had about 20 years ago, seems like happened yesterday. Our hearts get radiant when we think about it. The joy and sweetness of our married life multiplied several folds when we realized that a new life has sprung in my womb. Those days I had to commute for about one and a half hours daily to work. The continual recital of the Rosary, even while travelling and working, strengthened me and helped me pull along without getting sick or weary.

During the 6th month of my pregnancy, I had a rough ride as the bus in which I was travelling fell into a gutter. I felt uneasy, and was taken to a hospital. The doctor advised me to take bed-rest until the 9th month of pregnancy. After this mishap I took a decision to go before the Lord to a retreat centre and allow the baby in my womb to hear the word of God. Every day my husband would place the Bible on my growing belly and read aloud and pray. Within one month, I was able to get out of bed and do my daily work.

A week elapsed after the expected due date, but there was no signs of labour. I went to the hospital and stayed there for another week. Examinations revealed that the baby was in breech position. All my near and dear, went down on their knees before God. When I was being prepared for a C-Section, Holy Mass was being offered in the hospital Chapel. My anxious father attended that Mass and prayed fervently. During this time the baby turned in the womb and came to right position! I had a normal delivery and gave birth to a cute baby girl. As she came out, she did not move at all and this scared me. From the depth of my heart I cried out to the Lord, "Oh Jesus, won't I have my child?!" The God who hears our cries responded. The baby suddenly started showing signs of life. In a few days we were home with our little bundle of joy. All thanks and praise to Jesus. May His name be glorified forever!

I belong to St. Raphael Cathedral church in Palakkad, Kerala. The Christmas material prepared by Angels' Army this year was received with much delight, by our Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Mathew Vazhayil. He inspired everyone during his homily to use this material as an Advent preparation and distributed it among the Catechism students. He also read out the reflection, daily during his homily and explained it well such that we found it easy to contemplate on it after our Family Prayer. This material was even followed by the seminarians for

streflection. On the 21 , all Catechism students went to visit three orphanages on his initiative. We express our sincere thanks to our dear parish priest and to the entire Angels' Army team members who helped us to prepare a manger for Jesus in our hearts.

The Christmas preparatory named 'To the Manger with our Families' was helpful, to experience how God revealed himself through various prophets to regain what was lost in the

The Christmas preparatory named 'To the Manger with our Families' was helpful, to experience how God revealed himself through various prophets to regain what was lost in the

thparadise. From November 30 , we read the Bible passage and contemplated on the reflection, every morning at 5:30am, during adoration. During breaks, we tried to memorize the Word of God and every evening, we shared about, how we practiced the Word of God. This helped to make our relationships deeper. We were also able to meaningfully prepare for Christmas. We appreciate those who put time and work into this material. Let the Lord Almighty shower his blessings upon you.

Our son, Joseph, who is only 7 years old, showed much interest in the Advent Preparatory- “To the Manger with our Families”. After the reflection about the Prophet Ezekiel on December 17th, I asked my child to pray for the kids who were killed in Peshwar, Pakistan. I was surprised by his response. He said, “Mamma, Why should I pray for them? If the Prophet Ezekiel intercedes for them, they will be covered with flesh and they shall live.” “How deep was his faith!” I thought. He got a glimpse of the Bible as we read about the different prophets. Now, he has asked me for his very own Children's Bible. I give my sincere thanks to the Angels' Army team for moulding my child in deep Christian faith.

Wishing you all the blessings of Christ,
