Harry Van Doren, 55, Dies While Returning to Akron Home

Betty VanDoren of 550 More-ley Ave., Akron, Ohio, writes of,the death of her husband, HarryMorris Van Doren '21, on Aug. 26,1953.

She says, "I know this is oldnews but in going through themany papers, I found this letterand thought that you might liketo know of the death of my husband.

"I would like his fraternity Brother C. C. Toppscott of St. Louis toknow this sad news. I am sendingthe newspaper clipping for it tellsthe story and makes it easier forme."

Harry Loved FunThe clipping reads: Harry Van

Doren loved fun. "If you can't havefun," he loved to tell friends, particularly at social gatherings, "thendon't live."

One Wednesday afternoon Harry M. Van Doren, 55, quit havingfun.

Quickly and quietly he died in hiscar as he and his wife, Betty, near-ed the end of a short vacation tripto his familv home at Litchfield,111.

Had Heart AttackMrs. Van Doren was driving. She

had taken the wheel at Mount Ver-non. Instead of going directly hometo 550 Moreley ave., they headedfirst for the Bath kennels wherethey had left their dog, Sraokey.

Along route 21 near Ghent hereached for a piece of candy. Mrs.Van Doren asked for some, too. When her request went unanswered, she turned momentarily. Vanalready was dead.

Dr. C. D. Biei-y at Bath said deathwas instantaneous, the result ofa heart attack. Van Doren's healthhad declined for about a year.

In February he was hospitalizedseveral weeks with a lung ailmentassociated with his heart condition.

But that didn't stop "Tubby,"as many called him. With characteristic optimism he had been "feeling fine" in recent weeks and loved ,to say he was obeying his doctors!to the extent he had given up golf, j

Van, 55 in May, had been at var-1ious times a musician, newspaper jreporter, editor, politician, public!relations man, radio commentator,'disc jockey and a highly success-1ful business executive. I

In recent years he was best'known foi' his work as vice presi-,dent and director of public relationsfor the J. Gordon Gaines insurance.

firm, which specializes in underwriting trucking concerns.

He started out as a river boatdrummer while attending the University of Illinois. He organizedand played in numerous musicalcombinations here and was amongthe earliest of Akron's broadcasters.

Every trucking meeting here fea-ured a musical aggregation assembled by Van Doren. Through

the years he built up one of thebiggest collections of jazz recordsin the city. For several years heconducted a Saturday afternoonrecord show over Radio StationWAKR.

Van was born in Litchfield. Aftera short newspapering stint atChampaign, 111., he served in theNavy in World War I and cameto the old Akron Press as a reporter.
