As we begin this period of prayer and reflection, you are invited to pick up a copy of this year’s Lenten devotional booklet, “Fellowship of Prayer” (one copy per family, please). These devotionals, written by Julie Richardson Brown offer us a daily opportunity to “make the connections between the everyday ordinary things of our lives and the extraordinary moments of grace, when we are reminded that we do not live this life in a vacuum, but as part of a story so much bigger than us.” We are excited to announce that NC4 will be hosting an “Acoustics with Danish” Worship on Sunday, March 30 th at 11:00AM in Harlow Hall. The focus of our time together is to talk about updates to our NC4 Future Story strategic plan. But we'll also have a guest classical guitarist with us, as well as an interactive mission project to work on as we pack snack bags for our homeless brothers and sisters. Our January Jazz & Gospel Brunch Worship in Harlow Hall was a great success, and we are looking for- ward to more fun, fellowship, and conversation around tables in March. In contrast to our January Brunch Worship, however, we will just have coffee, croissants, fruit, and Danishes for folks to nibble on. THE SEASON OF LENT Beginning Ash Wednesday, March 5, we enter the liturgical season of Lent. Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednes-day marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fast-

ing, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection. As we begin this period of prayer and reflection, you are invited to pick up a copy of this year’s Lenten devotional booklet, “Fellowship of Prayer” (one copy per family, please). These devotionals, written by Julie Richardson Brown offer us a daily opportunity to “make the connections between the everyday ordinary things of our lives and the extraordinary moments of grace, when we are reminded that we do not live this life in a vacuum, but as part of a story so much bigger than us.”

We are excited to announce that NC4 will be hosting an “Acoustics with Danish” Worship on Sunday, March 30th at 11:00AM in Harlow Hall. The focus of our time together is to talk about updates to our NC4 Future Story strategic plan. But we'll also have a guest classical guitarist with us, as well as an interactive mission project to work on as we pack snack bags for our homeless brothers and sisters. Our January Jazz & Gospel Brunch Worship in Harlow Hall was a great success, and we are looking for-ward to more fun, fellowship, and conversation around tables in March. CHANCEL FLOWER UPDATE On of the most lovely ways to com-memorate an anniversary or spe-cial occasion, or to remember a loved one, is to provide flowers for our Chancel on Sundays. BUT, as with everything else these days, the prices have increased in this new year. In order for us to purchase a reasonable bouquet of flowers, the cost is $50 for the flowers plus a $14 delivery fee, for a total of $64 per arrange-ment. If you wish to provide flowers for the Sanctuary, but do not wish to pay the delivery fee, your family will need to make arrangements to pick up your flowers on FRIDAY and bring them by the church between 9am-3pm, or bring them with you when you come to the church on Sunday.

We always appreciate the beauty of the flowers provided!

The Book of Revelation Breaking the Code— Understanding the Book of Revelation

Six Sessions— Sundays in March-May

The book of Revelation contains passages of great beauty and

comfort, as well as passages that strike the casual reader as bizarre, bewildering, and sometimes frightening! SO what does it all mean? Beginning with an introductory session on Sunday, March 2, 12:45 in the Memorial Chapel, Rev. Jon Goeringer will take you through the seven churches, the seven seals and other “mysterious” and symbolic language from John’s vision. If you are interested in this class, but haven’t yet signed up, please call the church office so we can make sure we have enough materials for everyone.

“Faces of the Homeless” - Sunday, March 23 in

Harlow Hall following worship

Congregation Shirat HaNefesh, and Rabbi Gerry Serrota are inviting us to participate with them in the ancient traditions of Passover, by sharing a Seder meal with them on Monday, April 14 in Harlow Hall. The Seder tradition encourages children of all ages to participate and Rabbi Gerry works hard to make sure it is accessible and meaningful to them. The word "seder" literally means "order" in Hebrew. The name comes from the fact that there are 15 parts of the ritual service, all re-volving around the upcoming Passover dinner. Food is an important symbolic element of Passover. The liturgy is an ancient tradition that begins with about an hour and a half of liturgy before the meal and prayers following. The cost per adult will be $30 for adults, which includes the 5-course meal, including matzo ball soup, ge-filte fish, cabbage, roasted potatoes and much more! RSVP’s will be needed no later than APRIL 1! To make reservations, please respond to:

As we approach Lent and Holy Week starting on March 5th (Ash Wednesday), NC4 invites you to contemplate the Last Supper by taking in some art that portray the events of that fateful night over 2,000 years ago. Leonardo DaVinci's Last Supper hangs in the kitchens and dinning rooms of many houses, and you'll see some variations on his famous interpretation hanging in our art gallery too. Plus, we have a reproduction of an old photo of the Cane Ridge meetinghouse that birthed the Disciples of Christ movement over 200 years ago. The original Cane Ridge revival in 1801 was really one big Communion Service so the Last Supper is particularly meaningful for the Disciples. Some prints of the Holy Land round out our presentation. So stop by while you are coming or going from worship. The art will be displayed starting on March 5th for Ash Wednes-day until after Easter. If you have any pieces you'd like to loan us bring them in, we still have a few spots free!

Contemplate the Last Supper in our Art Gallery Hallway

Homelessness is a hard, degrading life and the reasons for how individuals and families become home-less is often misunderstood. Along with unpredictable housing comes hunger in which adults have to sacri-

fice their own nutrition to provide for their children.

North Chevy Chase Christian Church and Shirat HaNefesh invite you to a special program, “Faces of Homelessness”, sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless, on Sunday, March 23rd at 12:15PM in Harlow Hall, NC4. Sandwiches, beverages and dessert will be served.

This program is free to the public and will feature two extraordinary people who are committed to sharing their personal and powerful experiences of homelessness with us. The program will include a multi-media slide show or video about homelessness in America, a moderator to present facts about homelessness and two speakers who are or have been homeless. Join us and learn what you can do to support local, lasting solutions to the problem of homelessness.

Report from the BoardReport from the BoardReport from the BoardReport from the Board

Congregational officers and other church leaders met on January 12, 2014, in a short retreat and planning session in which they focused on the first six months of the year. Among the positive developments noted in the meeting were (1) the involvement and contributions of newer members to ministries such as Sunday School, the diaconate, and services to the bereaved; (2) the Treasurer’s Report noted that the 2013 ended with the church budget in black ink, and (3) the church is moving into the implementation stage of the Future Story planning process. A Leadership Development and Organizational Structure task force was approved by the Board at the meeting. There is a high level of willingness among members to assist the church; however, willingness to undertake high-level leadership responsibilities is lacking. The charge to the task force is to identify problems that make church members reluctant to assume top-level congregational leadership and suggest ways to address the problem; identify programs for congregational leadership development, and consider other ap-proaches to congregational governance that may be more effective at NC4 at the present time. Jewel Barlow, Jennifer Butler, Judith McManus-Murray, and Nancy Solomon are members of the task force. The task force will report to the Board in September 2014.

The 12th annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days (March 21-24, 2014) will see hundreds of Christians coming together in “Resisting Violence, Building Peace.” Guided by the image of Jesus weeping over a capital city that turned from the true way of peace (Luke 19:41-42), Advocacy Days events expose the violence that pervades our culture and world. Registration brochures may be found on the shelf in the Glass way. REGISTRATION = $210 All events are held at the Double Tree Crystal City 300 Army-Navy Drive Arlington, VA
