INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
PRAYING CIRCLES AROUND YOUR
BIGGEST DREAMS AND GREATEST FEARS!
“The prayer of a person living right with God
is something powerful to be reckoned with.”
James 5:16 (The Message)
***
“Who you become is determined by how you pray.
Ultimately, the transcript of your prayers becomes the script of your life.”
Mark Batterson, The Circle Maker
***
We’re all familiar with the popular question: “So how’s your love life?” But when
was the last time someone dared to ask you, “So how’s your prayer life?” Last
April someone gave me a book that asked this very question, and to be honest
with you, it left me reeling, and triggered some serious somersaults deep in my
soul! The name of the book is called The Circle Maker, by a pastor in Washington
D.C. named Mark Batterson. I took this book with me on my last prayer retreat
back in April. I was just hoping for a little inspiration. That’s all. Just a little
food for thought while I enjoyed some quiet time away from the hectic demands of
life and ministry. Little did I know, I was about to experience a spiritual earth-
quake that is still producing powerful aftershocks in my life to this very day!
Consider this challenging quote, for example: “It is absolutely imperative at the
outset that you come to terms with this simple yet life-changing truth: God is for
you. If you don’t believe that, then, you’ll pray small timid prayers; if you do be-
lieve it, then you’ll pray big audacious prayers. And one way or another, your
small timid prayers or your big audacious prayers will change the trajectory of
your life and turn you into two totally different people. Prayers are prophecies.
They are the best predictors of your spiritual future. Who you become is
determined by how you pray. Ultimately, the transcript of your prayers becomes
the script of your life.”
And this one: “The greatest moments in life are the miraculous moments when
human impotence and divine omnipotence intersect – and they intersect when we
draw a circle around the impossible situations in our lives and invite God to
intervene.”

When it comes to prayer, I have always been more of a “contemplative” than an “intercessor,” or
“prayer warrior.” I know very well how to be still and “know that He is God.” That’s just my natu-
ral spiritual temperament, and I gladly accept it as a beautiful gift from the Lord. But one thing
this book showed me is that if I truly want to be more like Jesus, it’s not enough simply to say:
“That’s just who I am and the way I’ll always be.” No, as a disciple of Christ, I long to be stretched
and fully shaped into HIS IMAGE in every possible way … and that includes learning how to pray
as he prayed.
Jesus certainly had a contemplative side. He loved to steal away to quiet, deserted places, or as-
cend to a mountain-top, and pray alone in solitude through the watches of the night (Mark 1:35:
Luke 6:12). But Jesus also knew how to pray big, earth-shaking, audacious prayers as well
(Matthew 17:20-21). And as a result, God’s miraculous kingdom was constantly breaking in wher-
ever he went, bringing hope to the hopeless, liberating the captives, opening blind eyes, and pro-
claiming good news to the poor! This is prophetic prayer. This is “marching around Jericho” type of
prayer. This is the kind of prayer that refuses to give up and instead, keeps on boldly asking, seek-
ing, and knocking until God’s abundant will and provision are fully revealed.
“If you aren’t desperate you won’t take desperate measures. And if you don’t pray like it depends on
God, the biggest miracles and best promises will remain out of your prayer reach. But if you learn
how to pray hard, like the persistent widow, God will honor your bold prayers because your bold
prayers honor God.” (Mark Batterson)
When I returned from my prayer retreat back in April, we promptly ordered a copy of this book for
all of our staff, elders and deacons. The message I sensed from the Lord seemed so clear to me at
the time: “Stop circling the wagons in fear and anxiety, and start circling my promises instead!”
Whatever we are facing as individuals or as a church – whether it’s relational, physical, or financial
concerns - God is challenging us to pray boldly and to invite him into our impossible situations.
Jesus said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God” (Luke 18:27). To not only believe
this, but to begin to pray like this on a regular basis, is to embark on a faith-building adventure
that will truly change our lives forever! Our session has already seen the miraculous fruit of such
bold prayer, and now we sense the Lord calling us DEEPER IN and HIGHER UP as we step into
the future he has prepared for our beloved church. But this isn’t something reserved for our church
leadership alone. We are all being called to participate together as the entire body of Christ!
Beginning on Sunday, August 4, we will be entering into a four week, all-church Bible-study and
Sermon series based on Mark Batterson’s book, The Circle Maker. For one month, we will saturate
ourselves in the biblical truths of this powerful book and video series. Every Tuesday night
throughout the month of August, we will gather at 6:00 PM to break bread together, fellowship and
worship in a spirit of gratitude and faithful expectation (Acts 2:42-47). We will then break into
small groups, gather around God’s Word, and discuss what it means to become “circle makers” who
dare to pray boldly in Jesus’ name! Each Sunday we will share inspiring stories and personal testi-
monies of how God is answering our prayers as we learn to seek first his kingdom in every aspect of
our lives.

From the Desk of Beth Ann Murray...
That special Wednesday at SonRise Christian
Fellowship, we taught 130 VBS children that one of
the striking aspects of Jesus’ teachings and His life
was the way He spoke of the value of children and
how we can learn from them. We taught them that
they are special and unique to Jesus and He loves
them very much.
You see my friends, God speaks to us through
children and that’s why our Children’s Ministry is so
effective.
Thank you to all my friends who helped with VBS
this summer. You are the heart, mind, hands and
feet of Jesus. Our Children’s Ministry cannot grow
without you! By volunteering at VBS this year you
truly made a difference. Thank You!
We want to personally thank all of our 100
volunteers who were unpretentious, willing to be
honest, respectful, reliable people, child-friendly and
leaders. Thank you for believing in God’s true vision
of our Children’s Ministries wanting to make a
difference in a child’s life and investing in their lives
and their eternal future.

It’s amazing to think how our society has changed
because Jesus said,
“Let the little children come to me.”
We had a wonderfully successful Vacation Bible school
(VBS) this year. On June 24th, at 12:15, all 91 volun-
teers who signed up to help with The Polar Expedition—
Staying Cool with Jesus, our VBS program, all went
home feeling good about our first day. The majority of
the volunteers spent an hour-and-a-half the day before
the program began, in an extensive training meeting.
We all performed our duties and I was feeling so proud
of how well we all did!
While praying for the second day to be like the first, it
dawned on me that we were not the ones who were
good—it was God who deserved the credit. I thought
since everything was going so well, it must have been
our planning and execution of our assigned jobs that
made our day so easy. I innocently believed that it was
by our abilities that allowed us to achieve success. I for-
got that behind it all, is our good God who prompts, pre-
vents, provides and protects.
On the third day, our Bible story and verse was Jesus’
love is for you and the story was shared how Jesus repri-
manded His disciples about not allowing the children to
come to Him. Back in the day, children were not heard
or seen. Not until the birth of Jesus and His ministry
did children get elevated from the bottom of the social
ring. In the ancient world, dignity such as King Herod
was a man of distinct social status; And we all know
Jesus came into this world not wearing His crown.
Dignitaries like King Herod were associated with having
power, high status, wealth and not having to be a
servant. Jesus, on the other hand, came to us as a
servant. You see, humility is a character we admire, but
way back then, it was not so. Jesus redefined humility.
It is because of His servant-hood life, His crucifixion and
resurrection that led to humility being a virtue that is so
widely admired.
When Jesus came to this world as a little baby, the
birth of every human being having equal worth, was con-
sidered; And because of how Jesus impacted our world’s
view of children during His ministry, it helped change
our views and helped people have a sense of empathy for
children back in the day. Many died of exposure, many
were aborted, countless were brought into slavery,
poverty or both. It made me stop and think about our
children in this great big world who are suffering today.
Jesus started a social revolution where children went
from hardly being considered people, to becoming more
valued and protected.

Teresa & Garrett Johnson, Jordan Hargrove, Heather Simbro and all the people who brought in VBS snacks, needs
and materials—there were plenty of you. Last but not least, thank you family members who allowed their family to
help in VBS this year; And a special thank you church family for praying for the children who attended and for the
people who volunteered.
If I forgot to mention you in my note here, please know I love you and thank you for everything you did for our VBS
to be as spectacular as it was.

MISSION SAN LUIS REY TOUR
RESCHEDULED
Last month’s visit to the recently refurbished Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside had to be rescheduled. We are now planning to visit the mission on Thursday, August 22.
Bring a sack lunch (you get to choose your favorite menu that way). We’ll eat at the church at 12:00 noon before going to the mission. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and we’ll enjoy a good time together. Cost of the mission tour will be $4.00. We’ll provide transportation.
A sign-up sheet will be available as the time approaches, or call Chuck Boatman at 760-731-1421 if you wish to go.
For those who bemoan the fact that “church ain’t what it used to be,” here’s a humorous look at what the future might hold!
Church Sermon Of The Future Or Is It Now?
PASTOR: "Can we please turn on our tablet, PC, iPad, cellphone, and Kindle Bibles to 1 Cor 13:13. And please switch on your Blue-tooth to download the sermon.
"Now, Let us pray, committing this week into God’s hands. Open your Apps, BBM, Twitter and Facebook and chat with God . . .
"As we take our Sunday tithes and offering, please have your credit and debit cards ready. You can log on to the church Wi-fi using the password Lord909887. The ushers will now circulate mobile card-swipe machines among the worshipers. Those who prefer to make electronic funds transfers are directed to computers and laptops at the rear of the church. Those who prefer to use iPads, flip them open. Those who prefer telephone
banking, take out your cell phones to transfer your contributions to the church account.”
[The holy atmosphere of the Church becomes truly electrified as ALL the cellphones, iPads, PCs and laptops beep and flicker!]
Final Blessing and Closing Announcements:
“This week's ministry cell meetings will be held on the various Facebook group pages where the usual group chatting takes place.
Please log in and don't miss out.
“Thursday's Bible study will be held live on Skype at 1900hrs GMT. Please don't miss out.
“You can follow your Pastor on Twitter this week for counseling and prayers. God bless you and have a wonderful week!”

God does not do certain things without the cooperation of man. We continually ask, “Why doesn’t God do the thing
instead of waiting for me?” The answer is that He chooses not to do so. It is like the difference between God’s order and His permissive will. His permissive will allows the devil to do his worst and allows me to sin as I choose, until I choose to resist the Devil, quit sinning, and come to God in the right relation-ship through Jesus Christ. It is God’s will that human beings should get into moral relationship with Him, and His covenants are for that purpose. “Why doesn’t God save me?” some ask. He has saved them, but they have not entered into relationship with Him.
All the great blessings of God are finished and complete, but they cannot be ours until we enter into relationship with Him on the basis of His covenant. Salvation is not an edict of God; Salvation is something wrought out on the human plane through God becoming man. Waiting for God somehow to do something in us so we can trust in this is incarnate unbelief; it means we have no faith in Him. We have to go out of our-selves to enter into the covenant with God, just as God went out of Himself to enter into His covenant with man (Phil. 2:7, 8). (NKW) - Oswald Chambers
