“SERVING SENIORS”“SERVING SENIORS”“SERVING SENIORS”“SERVING SENIORS” [Some thoughts on “aging gracefully” -- Watch out! It could happen to you!]

Will Rogers once said, “If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have

anything to laugh at when you get old.” That’s an exaggeration, of course,

but I’ve spent a lot of years observing people and here’s what I’ve seen: those

who age best are the ones who can laugh at life’s little jokes on us.

Things we once nurtured and delighted in—rippling muscles, a silky-smooth

complexion, athletic prowess, a svelte silhouette—are long gone, but we’re

okay with that! Now, those characteristics we may not have been born with,

such as striking good looks, a quick wit, or any of the often superficial dis-

tinctives on which the world places a premium no longer seem as important

to us as they once did.

Instead, we’ve learned that life’s hard knocks have been good for us:

• The struggles have brought us moral stamina;

• The heartaches have enabled us to grow more sensitive to the

needs of others;

• The losses have made us more grateful for the blessings we’ve

been given;

• The knowledge we worked so hard to attain—quite a bit of which

we’ve now forgotten—has been enhanced by wisdom and the

more seasoned perspective that long experience provides.

Here’s a question to ask of some-

one 75-years-of-age or older: “If

you could be fifty years younger,

but had to give up what you’ve

learned about life to do so, would

you be willing to make the trade?”

When I’ve asked that question, the

answer has almost invariably been, “Absolutely not!”

The Mission Statement of Fallbrook Presbyterian Church: To bring people into a relationship with Jesus Christ, grow them up as His lifelong disciples, and gather them into a

Christ-centered community where they can experience and express God’s love.

At an earlier age, we vigorously collected lots of

“stuff.” Now, we’re finding that “downsizing” suits

us just fine, and we’re enjoying giving many of

those things to younger family and friends. We’re

also finding that it feels good to downsize our list of

hurts, grudges, and things that aggravate us. We’ve

discovered that we don’t have to pass these burdens

on to anybody!

The troubles of age are God’s way of hinting to us

that we shouldn’t hold on too tightly to the fading

glories of our lives here when he’s preparing a

much better home for us “over there.”

I’ve recently been given the opportunity to join the

fine pastoral and support staff of our church as a

“pastoral assistant.” The primary focus of my min-

istry will be on “Serving Seniors.” The aim is two-

fold: 1) to serve the seniors in our church family in

various ways, and 2) to encourage our older mem-

bers to continue serving the Lord and his cause in

this world.

If you’re a senior, have you ever said to yourself, “I

wish I knew someone who could help me with . . .

[name whatever you’re struggling with, such as a

computer problem, or advice on how to respond to

a solicitation phone call, et cetera]” I’d like to hear

about your need or other suggestions on how

“Serving Seniors” might help you. If you’re

younger and have talents or expertise that you

would like to use in “Serving Seniors,” I’d like to

hear from you also.

I invite you to join with me in an intergenerational

ministry that holds the promise of benefiting the

whole church, regardless of age.

Satchel Paige was the oldest rookie in Major

League Baseball. In 1948, he pitched his first game

for the Cleveland Indians at age 42. He pitched his

last game in organized baseball at age 60. He once

asked someone, “How old would you be if you did-

n’t know how old you are?”

Regardless of how old you are, there’s a way for all

of us together to be “Serving Seniors.” I look for-

ward to talking with you about it.

A Great Stabilizer!A Great Stabilizer!A Great Stabilizer!A Great Stabilizer! “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and

perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before

him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat

down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:2

We are all looking forward to the Olympics this

summer. During my High School years I competed

with our gymnastics team. Even though it looks

like an independent sport, the overall scores from

each event determined if the team would win the

gold, silver or bronze.

I was always intrigued with my sister who com-

peted on the beam. It is a four inch wide balance

beam on which a gymnast jumps and spins all

around without falling off. While watching Susi,

my sister’s routine of jumping, flipping and danc-

ing on the beam, I would always wonder how she

could perform her routine without getting dizzy?

How does she know if she has done two rotations?

“Simple,” she says, “I just fix my eyes on an object

in front of me. It’s my stabilizer. I count my

rotations by how many times I pass it.” “Yeah,

simple,” I said. But it is an interesting lesson on

trusting.

After thinking about what she said, it reminded me

of how we need to fix our eyes on Jesus. Lock our

eyes on Him, then He will be the stabilizing factor

no matter what else goes on in our lives.

Love,

Beth Ann

Children’s Ministry Happenings…

Our year is over and some of our children’s pro-

grams have taken a break for the summer.

We want to say “Thank You, Church Family for

volunteering your time in Children’s Ministry.”

This is a special gift that keeps on giving. The

Sunday School Staff, AWANA, Los Amigos,

Nursery, choirs, preschool staff and VBS Volun-

teers, we are so blessed that you so freely share

your faith, experience and God-given wisdom with

our children. Thank You, Thank You and Thank

You! We love you.

So what’s been happening around here?

Summer Sunday school is in full swing and we

have an awesome fun staff that volunteered to be a

part of your children’s lives this summer. Three

FPC students helped me pick out the next “Elevate”

series. On June 24th, we started “Heroes in Mega

City.” There are plenty of bad guys and, of course,

good guys. We are having a lot of fun with this

one. And thank you, staff, for continuing on with

us for the summer. The kids and Children’s

Ministry staff love you and appreciate you.

* Preschool Summer School ended on June 22nd.

The children and staff smiled the whole time. We

had a great big tent, called the Storybook Playhouse

set up in the Yellow door, where the children met

before their day began. Then they helped Jack get

rid of the Giant. They took home a golden egg and

some magic beans. Tuesday, they became Prin-

cesses who were saved by the pirates. Wednesday

they had their very own Olympics. I think the kid

from Botswana won the gold in the obstacle course.

Thursday they all looked like clowns on Circus

day, and Friday they had a Luau. Pastor Alex made

us a huge water tunnel that the kids absolutely

loved. Who wouldn’t, now you all know why I

love my job. Thank you, preschool staff for a job

well done.

*Come join us next fall for preschool. It truly is a

wonderful experience for your child. Just call the

church and ask for Beth Ann. You can always find

her somewhere around the church. 760-728-5804

*VBS- Was yet another awesome journey. God’s

word was shared by all the volunteers and the

children who participated soaked up every part of

Feature of the Month:

Brad Britton, Madison Britton and Alexis

Franks will be staying with the Greens in July to

help kick off the “Annie’s Closet” project.

Although they will bring as many suitcases of

clothing that they can, they can use funds they

raise above the cost of the trip to purchase

additional clothing in Malawi. They will be

working with the orphans and ministering in the

villages.

We need to keep them in prayer starting now for

the whole trip and support them in any way God

calls us to. They are raising their own funds for

this trip so any financial help will be greatly

appreciated.

Dear friends,

We are overdue in an update to you all! In a

nutshell, we love Malawi dearly and thank God

every day for this opportunity. Still, we’ve

struggled to do what is in our hearts’ desire—to

share updates with you in a timely manner on

daily blessings, local needs and prayer requests.

The good news is that we have been here a little

over three months and are finally feeling settled,

peaceful and focused to accomplish what the

Lord is ordaining.

Our blog is ready!

Finally … we have a Green Family blog to share

with you all:

Daniel’s experience while he was in captivity.

Susan Holthaus set the mood by making Babylon

appear right in our own Sanctuary. You are amaz-

ing, Susan. Terri Marroquin started our day every

morning with new songs and smiles. Betty Falls

and her drama team acted out many stories that

Daniel and his friends experienced while living in

Babylon. Catie Timme and her crew kept the

yummy snacks fun and delicious. Michael Mann

and company kept the kids laughing and giggling

while playing games at Playground Palace. Char-

lene Mann cracked the whip at the Market Place.

The kids loved having the freedom to pick their

own craft to make each day. The most visited

market spot was the Armory tent. Bill Saunders

and Walt Perry kept all the little soldiers at bay.

Well, almost, I saw a few sword fights. Not too

much blood was shed, just a band-aid or two

needed. Janel and Alex organized the Tribes and I

can’t even thank all the volunteers

who helped make our VBS the most

sought after event in Fallbrook.

God certainly has blessed this

church with a selfless group of

church family members. Thank

You! Thank You! Thank You!

You are the best and we love all of

you with our whole hearts. Enjoy

the rest of your summer. You

deserve it.

Beth Ann

Missionary Reports Missionary Reports Missionary Reports Missionary Reports The following is from Barbosa de Oliveira, a

missionary we support who is currently based in

Johannesburg, South Africa. He and his family

were in Fallbrook in June and he addressed the

congregation on June 17.

FURLOUGH: WHAT IS THIS, ANYWAY? Many still do not understand what “furlough”

means for missionaries. Please don’t get me wrong.

The problem is that the word itself doesn’t convey

what it really is. Not for us, for many whom we

visit, and for most of those we leave behind. It is

often said on the field that “furlough is the mission-

aries’ vacation.” Sorry, I have to chuckle at this

comment. For some whom we visit, often it is

remarked that this is a “refreshing time for mission-

aries.” What is that for us? First and foremost, it is not

vacation at all. So much so that in OC we call this

time of ministry “home assignment.” Most of the

time it is taken as work—a very necessary part of

our ministry. We truly enjoy seeing our friends

whom we haven’t seen for a long time, get reac-

quainted with many, and

enjoy making new

friends. Being at the

churches who are the

backbone of our ministry

is always a joy and a plus.

The other side of it no

missionary will tell you

openly, and I will take the

risk here—just between

us. The hours of traveling, airports, roads, and fast

food on the road are exhausting and very draining.

As we hit the bed at night (generally two or three

different beds per week) we realize that it is abso-

lutely not a piece of cake. “Why do you folks do it, anyway?” That’s the

question of greater impor-

tance. Just between us? We

do it because we enjoy

being with you! The

opportunity to share with

friends like yourself and

the fellowship with you are

the thrilling part of it. The

uniqueness of letting you

know what the Lord of the

Harvest is doing in Africa

and how he is using ordinary men and women to

expand his kingdom is worth every step of the way.

Besides all of that, helping the family, especially

the kids, to be acquainted with those who are

behind us faithfully through the years is a joy that

we will not withdraw from anyone.

Sincerity is not guidance. Sincerity may say “I am sure this plane goes to New

York.” You believe this sincerely, but the plane will go to Miami if it is scheduled

for Miami and your sincerity will do nothing to change that.

There is a way which seems right to a man but its end is the way to death.

Proverbs 14:12 RSV “Father, we often sincerely believe we are doing right, even if we are wrong. Give

us wisdom through Your Holy Spirit, guide us so that we do Your will, not ours.”

July 2012 The Chimes page 9

So, there we were… my dear friend, Lowie, and I,

snail pacing our way home down PCH after an

exhausting visit with my oncologist, digesting

information we were dreading as Lo gave m “A

keep my mind positive and trust God” pep-talk. As

we drove, her voice faded as I turned interiorly

towards my God and I told him I didn’t know how

to process that my cancer numbers had nearly

doubled in a month and I gained almost 20 more

pounds of fluid. Just then an old, black beat up

Impala pulled in front of me and made a left hand

turn towards the ocean. On its lowered, black spray-

painted bumper was a dark grey sticker that simply

said Psalm 91 in stark white letters. I pointed it out

to Lois and said we had to look it up because I

believe God was answering my prayer in a most

unconventional way.

After downing a few Margaritas in Carlsbad with

dinner, we drove home and I didn’t think about the

sticker till the next morning when I was imploring

God with the same inability to process the news

about my cancer spreading. I was given a flash

back picture of the bumper sticker and went directly

to my Bible. I was using my 365 Day Bible which

gives you an Old and New Testament reading, a

psalm and proverb so it took a while to find the

Psalm. I began to read how we were to praise God.

Hmmmm, I thought to myself… wow maybe I need

to praise him for all the healthy times I have had…

then it was if someone smacked me upside the head

and I caught interiorly that I was reading the wrong

Psalm and sure enough I was! I had skipped a few

days by mistake! So, I flipped to the real Psalm 91

and as I read tears filled my eyes:

Psalm 91

“We live within the shadow of the Almighty;

sheltered by the God who is above all gods.

This I declare, that he alone is my refuge, my place

of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him. For

he rescues you from every trap, and protects you

from the fatal plague. He will shield you with his

wings! They will shelter you. His faithful promises

are your armor. Now you don’t need to be afraid of

the dark any more, nor fear the dangers of the day;

nor dread the plagues of darkness, nor disasters in

the morning.

Though a thousand fall at my side, though ten

thousand are dying around me, the evil will not

touch me. I will see how the wicked are punished

but I will not share it. For Jehovah is my refuge! I

choose the God above all gods to shelter me. How

then can evil overtake me or any plague come near?

For he orders his angels to protect you wherever

you go. They will steady you with their hands to

keep you from stumbling against the rocks on the

trail. You can safely meet a lion or step on poison-

ous snakes, yes, even trample them beneath your

feet!

For the Lord says, “Because he loves me, I will

rescue him; I will make him great because he trusts

in my name. When he calls on me I will answer; I

will be with him in trouble and rescue him and

honor him. I will satisfy him with a full life and

give him my salvation.”

So, do I really believe the Lord placed that old

Impala in my path? You bet’cha! I think there are

a thousand million Impalas in our paths if we keep

close to the Lord and trust him with all we’ve got.

He is always there to reassure us and give us his

peace. I don’t know why my cancer has gone wild,

nor do I need to know… all I need to know is that

the Lord is my rescuer and deliverer and I love him.

End of story.

Then if that was not enough… the Madden family

left me a beautiful get well card on my porch a few

days later. They inscribed the following: “When

Marcy is confronted with grief, uncertainly, fear or

pressure, remind her of Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear,

for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am

your God… I will strengthen you and help you: and

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

My heart filled again. Little did the Madden family

know that above my chair is that very verse, bought

in a beautiful frame to encourage our Grief Group

members who used to meet in my house. God again

smiling down on me and reassuring me during this

goofy set back.

My friend Porry said she got a word for me from

the Lord. The word was “pause.” I believe this set

back is a time to pause and reflect on the goodness

of the Lord, to share this love of his with you and to

give my trust muscles full reign in my heart.

Then yesterday my friend Jean Tiffany and Diane

Ice took sign ups from you to pray for me for the

past 24 hours. Jean told me how far the line of

faith-filled prayer warriors extended and as you

waited to sign up for your hour. I can’t tell you how

much your prayers mean to me… how I feel them

as the peace that radiates from here to heaven. I

thank you and am humbled by your love! Prayer is

our answer, God is our answer and you are God’s

conduits of love!

So, keep your eyes open, your heart ready to be

filled and “Trust the Lord your God with all your

heart and soul and do not lean on your own under-

Is it really a vacation? If we don’t purposely

schedule time away (which we will do at the very

end prior to our return to Africa), vacation won’t

happen. Actually, in many ways we work more and

harder at home assignments than in any other time

in our homeland, Africa! As we come to many of you during this month, we

come with a great sense of expectation that the

Lord would meet together with us. We come in

frailty but at the same time in his strength. We

come with the understanding that we are doing

“this together” with the great expectation that he

will honor us with fruits that last, eternal dividends,

results that we will know fully only on the other

side of eternity. Yes, we are excited. We come to share our hearts,

look at yours, and rejoice together in His goodness

to count us worthy to participate in such a ministry.

Thank you! 005

Latest Update from the Green Family in Malawi

(continued from page 5)

A slight change in our course … We also wanted to share with you that we’ve made

an agreement with Miqlat to modify our working

and living arrangements: we have moved into a

different house and are working in a more inde-

pendent role. Upon arrival to Malawi, we found

Miqlat to be staffed with capable administrators

already here and living in the Miqlat house full

time. It made sense, therefore, to have our own

home in lieu of sharing one full time … as much as

we have valued the friendships of those living in

the house.

So what does this change really mean? We are

living fairly close to the Miqlat house, and will still

be there should a team from Fallbrook arrive (and

we will rejoice in that family reunion)! We are still

working with Miqlat in a variety of projects,

including “Annie’s Closet” in July/August, where

we will be hosting Brad Britton, Madison Britton

and Alexis Franks. We are counting the days for

their arrival! Also, we will be involved in the

October short-term mission trip to build play-

grounds at the hope centers, among other projects.

However, we will now be involved in other minis-

tries in Malawi as well, as the needs here are

abundant and we feel a calling to venture outside

the walls of Miqlat.

Hope Center stories are coming

Rest assured, we will continue to be involved at the

Kogoya Hope Center — continuing to bring news

of the Kogoya children to the sponsors at Fallbrook

Pres. We’ve spent many days at both Kogoya and

Thuchila Hope Centers, although not as much as

we’d hoped in the beginning due to fuel shortages

and priority projects at the new Miqlat Mission

House. The good news is that we have accumu-

lated many sweet stores, pictures and videos of how

God is working in the lives of the children and staff

at both hope centers. Many of these are or will be

posted on our new blog site.

In closing, the transition to living in Malawi has not

been difficult (except for missing Matthew tremen-

dously!) We feel we are “at home” here and

consider many of our new Malawian friends as

brothers and sisters. They have not taken the place

of our friends and family from Fallbrook whom we

miss dearly, but they are enriching our lives daily.

Thank you for your continued prayers and interest

in our work here. Your friendship is a treasure we

value greatly.

With love,
