Congratulations were given to all those elected to positions on the executive and thanks to all those who had undertaken these roles over the last year. The Board also paid tribute to the work and contribution of the outgoing Welsh Board chair Gethin Kemp.

The Board received a presentation from Melanie Thomas MBE, the lead MacMillan lymphoedema physiotherapist specialist at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Local Health Board. Her presentation was entitled ‘Lymphoedema Services in Wales how we got from A to Z by winning awards.’ As part of her presentation, Mel charted the history of how she started out in Lymphoedema care and has progressed to now being the Welsh Government lead on Lymphoedema. Mel and her team was named overall winner at last year’s CSP awards and her presentation was a major inspiration to Board members. The CSP Welsh Board was very proud of all the Mel has achieved and it was clear that she now has more objectives in her sights in order to improve services for patients.

Above: Ruth Jones is pictured with Mel Lewis

During the meeting, Welsh Board members discussed a range of issues including two current consultations on statutory advisory committees in Wales and Plaid Cymru’s options for integrating health and social care. Links to these consultations are found here:

Welsh Board members reected on a successful Annual Representatives Conference (ARC) in Cardi including the Board’s drinks reception at the end of the rst day of business. Members were also pleased to note that all three of their motions were acted upon with two successful in the vote and one brought from the secondary agenda to the primary agenda thus remitted to Council. Thanks were given especially to Non Griths and Sian Powell for their contribution to the ARC event sub-group.

Stephanie Best updated the Board on the approach being taken by the minister for health and social services Mark Drakeford

(to which he referred at ARC) on ‘Prudent Healthcare’. Members are encouraged to read the Bevan Commission paper – ‘Prudent Healthcare – the Underlying Principles’ available on the Wales pages of the CSP website.

Margie Polden BursaryMargie Polden, FCSP, who died in 1998, worked at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, where she initiated and developed physiotherapy in obstetrics and gynaecology, and within ACPOG, now POGP, she made an enormous contribution to the education of physiotherapists and other professionals.

A bursary was set up in memory of Margie by the generosity of her husband to fund a place at the POGP conference for a student or newly-quali ed physiotherapist. This bursary will be awarded annually to an applicant who is able to demonstrate an interest in the eld of women’s health, obstetrics and gynaecology, and is keen to develop that interest further. This year is an exciting year as we are merging with the CPPC and rebranding ourselves and the conference should be a one o with lots packed in.

The applicant should be a pre-registration physiotherapy student, or have quali ed during the same year as the conference. He/she must also be a member or student member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

The bursary funds both the conference fee and accommodation costs, however it does not fund the travel costs for the recipient.Contact: Please follow the link below for further information http://acpwh.csp.org.uk/bursaries-awards
