Golden Fork Award

The Lunchroom Teacher Assistants have created a new award to be given at the end of the year called the “Golden Fork Award.” The Golden Fork Award will be awarded to the class who has the best lunchroom behavior. They will be judged weekly on their table manners, how well they clean their messes and trays, and how quiet they are in the hallway to and from their classrooms. The best class is a surprise and will be announced every Friday. There will be a chart in the lunchroom to keep track of points earned for each class. The class with the most points at the end of the year will be awarded the Golden Fork Award. This project is only for 3rd – 6th grades. –Morgan

Fall Festival News

On October 10th, the CRS Fall Festival, organized by Mrs. McDowell, was held from 11 am to 1 pm. At the Fall Festival there were food, inflatables, and a lot of games. They also had themed basket bidding made by each class. Some of the games were a cakewalk, corn hole, face painting, a toy store, and even a haunted house! Prizes and candy were given out to winners in the games as well as cake for the cakewalk. At the cafeteria, teacher and parent volunteers served foods like pizza, chips, pop, and corn dogs. When the time turned 1 pm, everyone was tired but had a good time. Money raised went into the PTA fund. –Amy Moore

Toying with Science 4th grade went to the Paramount on October 15th. They went to see Toying with Science. The man who did the show was Garry Krisinsky. He talked about simple machines. He called one person from the audience and taught them to balance a feather on their hand and head. Then he performed a trick that it took him seven years to do. After that he balanced two ladders on his head, then he balanced a ladder with two hula hoops, an umbrella and two little ladders on his nose. After that he made a song up about the six simple machines. That was what the show was about. –Abigayle Crites

School Lunch Week

School Lunch Week was celebrated October 12th-16th. Most everyone each day wore: Monday – inside out clothes; Tuesday – dressed like a hillbillies; Wednesday – blue jean clothes; Thursday – pajamas; and Friday – Tomcat clothes. –Cassandra Holbrook

COSI on Wheels

On October 20, COSI on Wheels came to CRS to teach everybody about science. COSI on wheels demonstrated with science equipment and showed how much fun science can be. Some science topics taught were about energy, renewable resources, and non-renewable resources. The children helped COSI charge a segway and make it work again. A segway is a two wheeled scooter charged by us powering it with hand cranked electricity. They also demonstrated the working of a scrubber and uranium. A scrubber is an object that cleans pollution like smoke for electricity. Uranium is a radioactive substance and very dangerous. When COSI on Wheels left, the kids had learned a lot about science and had a great time doing it! -Amy

Food Feud The week of October 26th thru the 29th, the annual Food Feud was held between Ashland and Boyd County schools. They do this every year at the high school football game, where they announce the schools that bring the most food. Hager Elementary of Ashland, Boyd County Middle and Boyd County High School brought in the most food. Charles Russell contributed 936 items of food. Boyd County Schools won the Food Feud but Ashland won the game 46 to 0. –Cassandra Holbrook

The Hazards of Tobacco Use

On Tuesday, October 20, Dr. Aaron Fein, a 3rd year medical student from the University of Kentucky was a guest speaker in Mrs. Ledford’s 3rd grade class. He came to talk to our class about the hazards of tobacco. When you smoke you put your self at risk—smoking is an addiction! Cigarette tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. You can become addicted in less than two weeks and it can shorten your life by ten years. It has been proven that smoking causes cancer, emphysema (breath problems and infections in your lungs) and heart disease. Smoking restricts the blood vessels and keeps oxygen from flowing through your body properly. Not only does it do damage to the inside of your body, but it can also been seen in your appearance—yellow teeth, bad breathe, yellow fingernails, facial wrinkles, and not to mention smelly clothes! As awareness of the serious health issues smoking causes, tobacco companies were told they could no long advertise their products on television or radio. You may, however, still see ads for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco in grocery stores and some magazines. On the average a pack of cigarettes costs around $5.00—with most smokers spending thousands of dollars a year. Also, in the last several years, smoking has been banned in most public places, such as restaurants, sports stadiums, school facilities and many more. This decision was made based on the fact that second-hand smoke is harmful to others. Many people who live in a home with smokers are affected by their smoking, commonly suffering from asthma. Dr. Fein grew up in a home with smoking parents and he told us he has asthma. Unbelievably, most people start smoking between the ages of 12-17. There’s nothing cool about smoking! If you NEVER want to worry about quitting smoking—DON’T START!!! -Jake Damron

Miss Kentucky

On October 21, Miss Kentucky came to Charles Russell Elementary in the gym. She came to teach us to work hard in school and that dreams will come true. Miss Kentucky made a speech to Kindergarten-6th grade. She sang the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” She gave us some steps to help us with school. They are: 1) work hard in school; 2) be healthy; 3) we all have different talents—you can do anything. One kid at Charles Russell, Aaron Simpson, got sung “Happy Birthday” to and got to wear Miss Kentucky’s crown. MaKenzie Lucas

Med Student

Today, October 23, my class (Rowlett 3rd grade) had a medical student come in. His name is Chandler Wilfong. He taught us important things. He was teaching us about Health and Safety. He was teaching us about not to smoke. He was telling us about when he was little his parents smoked and his clothes smelled bad but he didn’t smoke. I just thought

that was weird. He told us that it wouldn’t keep us healthy or be a good athlete, if we smoked. He made us raise our hands if we knew someone who smoked. A lot of us raised our hands, even I raised my hand. He told us what smoking does to us and it sounded pretty bad to the class and me. I just found out that every time you smoke a cigarette shortens eleven minutes off your life. Every eight seconds of your day somebody dies of smoking. So I asked Dr. Wilfong how many subjects you need to know to be a doctor and he said pretty much every one of them. I think that’s hard to believe that you need to know social studies to be a doctor. I think it would be fascinating if you were a doctor. The United States is probably one of the countries that has a lot of people who smoke in it. A cigarette has medicine that makes you addicted to smoking. I know I will never smoke. Tobacco is in the cigarette. You have to be eighteen or older to smoke but in my book you shouldn’t smoke one day in your life even though your eighteen or older. I wonder who invented the cigarette. The companies who make cigarettes make a lot of money. Even though they put warning signs on them people still buy them. I just don’t get why they put the warning sign on them because if the customer wanted them they would change their mind and say “no” because there’s a warning sign. The medical student, Chandler Wilfong is a good medical student. Well, that’s what I think. Now I have the courage to tell that person in my life who smokes to stop and think of what he’s doing to his body. That medical student, Chandler Wilfong gave me some courage today. –Olivia

Pumpkin Project

On Monday, the 26th, in Mrs. Bonner’s class, her kindergartners did a project on pumpkins. They made pumpkin decorations for home and learned some facts about pumpkins. After that they read a book called “The Tiniest Pumpkin.” After they read their book, they got to have a special Halloween snack. Their snack was an orange and black cake made out of cupcakes and orange colored juice. It looked like they had a lot of fun. –Casey Walter

Halloween Centers

On Thursday, October 29th, Mrs. Amy Ledford’s 3rd grade class did different Halloween activities that were brought to school by Preston Ledford’s grandmother, Janice Ledford. They did this to celebrate Halloween. They drank orange Hawaiian Punch and had black treat bags to represent Halloween. In their centers they talked about how the leaves change and how spiders live in their habitats. –Cassandra Holbrook

Red Ribbon Week

October 26th-30th was Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a week that children celebrate being drug free. This year our theme for Red Ribbon Week was “Our School Rocks Drug Free!” We had a poster contest for Red Ribbon Week. The winners were: Katie Mullins-4th grade; Ashlee Salley-6th grade, Ethan Ratliff-kindergarten; Shelby Elkins-2nd grade; and Preston Ledford-3rd grade. During Red Ribbon Week, we had different dress-up days. Monday, we had to wear red; Tuesday was wear your Halloween costume day; Wednesday was Hippie Day; Thursday was Punk Rocker Day; and Friday was Tomcat Day! During counseling class, Mrs. Slater taught the students about drugs. Mrs. Slater showed 4th-6th grades a video about drugs and people’s lives. The video was called Natural High. I think that everyone learned something from Red Ribbon Week! -Morgan Scherer

The teachers will be working the registers, lobby, making shakes and cones, and the drive-thru! A percentage of the sales will be donated to the school. So come to McDonald’s and let the CRS staff serve your dinner. You’ll help the school at the same time. Save your receipts—the class that brings in the most receipts the Friday after (Nov 20) will win prizes from McDonald’s.

Arachnids

On October 28, in Mrs. Amy Ledford’s room, Mrs. Janice Ledford taught about arachnids. She taught how to tell insects from arachnids, like arachnids have 8 legs and 2 fangs while insects have 6 legs and 2 feelers. Did you know how to tell if the arachnid is a black widow? You can tell if it is a black widow by the back. The black widow will have a red hourglass on its back. After that she read “Diary of a Spider.” Later they made eatable arachnids. They used pretzels, crackers, peanut butter, and chocolate chips. They broke the pretzels in half and put peanut butter on both crackers and laid 8 pretzel halves on it. Put it together and laid chocolate chips on it then ate it. It was really good; I got to eat one! -Abigayle Crites

Conservation Education

A Conservation Leader, Mr. Kenny Skaggs, of the Kentucky Conservation Education Program, came to talk to the 5th grade about Kentucky and Kentucky’s wildlife. Mr. Skaggs talked about snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, salamanders, and fish. He also talked about safety in the wildlife. He asked questions to the 5th graders and gave out prizes for correct answers. He will visit the 5th grade classes once a month for five months. –Noah Roberts
