Suyuan and June (Jing-Mei)

• The main character is June (Ming-Na Wen)

• Her mother, Suyuan (Kieu Chinh), recently died.

• Suyuan abandoned her two twin daughters in China, but June later found out they were alive.

Lindo and Waverly• Lindo (Tsai Chin), the

mother of Waverly, was forced into a marriage at age 15 while living in China. Tricked her way out of her marriage.

• Waverly (Tamlyn Tomita), the daughter of Lindo, is the child who played chess and who falls in love with Rich.

Ying-Ying and Lena• Lena (Lauren Tom),

the daughter of Ying-ying, is married to Harold, the man who treats her like a child.

• Ying-ying (France Nuyen), Lena’s mother, fell in love with Lin Xiao. Lin Xiao cheated on her and she drowned their son.

An-Mei and Rose• Rose (Rosalind Chao), the

daughter of An-Mei, is the daughter who almost goes through a divorce with Ted. Rose also struggles with her role as a wife.

• An-Mei (Lisa Lu), Rose’s mother, leaves to live with her mother when she was the concubine in a household. An-Mei’s mother had her son stolen from her husband’s other wife, and later dies due to an overdose on opium.
