The prophet (S.A.W.) possessed many good morals. He had the best morals that anyone has ever had or will have. In the beginning of one surah, Allah (S.W.T.) described the prophet after he swore by the pen and what the (angels) write: in what can be translated as, “And verily, you (O Muhammad) are on great Khuluq.” [surat Al-Qalam, (verse 4)] Ibn Abbas (R.A.) interpreted "khuluq" by saying that the prophet has "a great deen, which is the deen of Islam." Sa'ad Bin Hisham came to Ae'shah (R.A.), the mother of the believers and said: “Tell me about the morals of the prophet (S.A.W.), she replied: “He had the morals of the Qur'an, have you not read what Allah said? “And verily, you (O Muhammad) are on great Khuluq [exalted standard of character].” [Reported by Imams Abu Dawood and An-Nassai'] Imam Ibn Katheer said: “This means that every character trait in the Qur'an became a trait in his personality and his morals; whatever the Qur'an ordered him to do, he did it, and whatever the Qur'an forbade him to do, he would never do it, in addition to that, Allah (S.W.T.) created him with great morals like shy- ness, generosity, courage, forgiveness, wisdom, and every good moral and character trait.” The most ancient Muslim scholar that compiled the prophet's morals and characteristics is Imam At- Tirmidhi (one of the hadith collectors), who died in 279 Hijri. He listed the prophet's noble features, morals and characters in his book “Ash-Shamaa’il Al-Muhammadiyyah” or "The Traits of Muhammad." This is a wonderful book; most of this speech has been taken from it. The following are some of the manners and characteristics that I have chosen to reflect upon today: The prophet's manner of speaking: When asked about the prophet's speaking habits, Ae'shah (R.A.) answered with the following state- ment: “The messenger (S.A.W.) did not talk much, like anyone of you, but he used to speak very clearly and con- cisely so that every listener could memorize.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari and Muslim] Anas Bin Malik (R.A.) said: “The messenger (S.A.W.) used to repeat a word three times so that people would understand it well.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari and At-Tirmdhi] The prophet's manner of laughing: Abdullah bin Al-Harith (R.A.) said: “The prophet's laughter was only by smiling.” [Reported by Imams At-Tirmidhi and Ahmad] and in another version, “I have not seen anyone smile more than the prophet (S.A.W.).” And in another narration “He (S.A.W.) used to smile till his molars and his back teeth showed.” [Reported by Imams At-Tirmidhi and Ahmad] The prophet's manner in joking with his companions: Abu Hurairah (R.A.) said: “The companions asked: Oh messenger of Allah, you joke with us!? He said: “Yes I do,, but I do not speak anything but the truth.” [Reported by Imam At-Tirmidhi] Many ahadith show that the prophet (S.A.W.) used to joke with his companions, men and women, the young and old, and even children. One day, an old woman came to the prophet (S.A.W.) and said: “Oh messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me enter Paradise. He said: “Oh mother of so and so! Paradise is not entered by an old person.” Upon hear- ing that, she left crying. The prophet (S.A.W.) said, "Tell her that she will not enter Paradise as an old person.” Allah (S.W.T.) said what can be translated as, “Verily, We have created them (women in Paradise) of special cre- ation. And made them virgins. Loving (their husbands), equal in age.” [surat Al-Waqi’ah, (verse 35 to 37)] The prophet used to be humble: The prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Do not over venerate (exaggerate your reverence for me) like the Christians over venerate the son of Mariam; I am only a slave, so say: Allah's slave and His messenger.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, At-Tirmdhi and Ahmad] A woman came to the prophet (S.A.W.) and said to him: I need you for something: He said: "Sit on any road of the roads of Al-Madinah you want, and I will sit with you.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, Muslim and At-Tirmidhi] The prophet (S.A.W.) used to be invited for old barley bread and grease and he used to accept the invi- tation.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah] “There was no one who was loved more by the companions than the prophet (S.A.W.), and when they saw him, they did not stand up for him because they knew that he disliked it.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi] Ae'shah (R.A.) was asked about what the prophet (S.A.W.) used to do in his house. She said: “He was a human like any human; he cleaned his clothes, milked his cattle, and served himself.” [Reported by Imam At- Tirmidhi] And in another narration, “He used to keep himself busy by helping his family.” [Reported by Imam Bukhari] The manner in which the prophet dealt with others: On the prophet's dealings with his servants His former servant, Anas (R.A.) said: “I served the mes- senger (S.A.W.) ten years, he never said to me "Uff". He never questioned me about why I did something. Nor did he ever ask why I did not do something. And he was morally the best person.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi] Ae'shah (R.A.) also said: “The messenger (S.A.W.) never beat anyone with his hand except when he went for Jihad for the sake of Allah (S.W.T.) and never did he beat a servant or a woman.” [Reported by Imams Muslim, At-Tirmidhi, Ahmad and Abu Dawud] On the prophet's dealings with outsiders: Ae'shah (R.A.) said: “The messenger (S.A.W.) was neither foul nor corrupt, nor was he loud in the market, nor did he get a bad attitude with people, instead he always for- gave.” [Reported by Imams At-Tirmidhi and Ahmad] Ae'shah (R.A.) also said: “I have not seen the prophet (S.A.W.) try to get even with the people who oppressed him as long as that person did not commit any prohibited act. When prohibited acts were committed, he used to get angrier than anyone, and when he was given the choice between two things, he always chose the easier as long as it was not a sin.” Ae'shah (R.A.) also said: “The prophet (S.A.W.) used to accept gifts and he was thankful for them.”[Reported by Imams Bukhari, Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi] The prophet's manner in dealing with bad people: Ae'shah (R.A.) said: “A man asked the prophet (S.A.W.) to come in while I was with the prophet (S.A.W.), so the prophet (S.A.W.) said: “He is a really bad man.” But then he let him in, and when he came in, the prophet (S.A.W.) spoke kindly and softly with him, and when he walked out, I said: “Oh, messenger of Allah! You said what you said then you spoke with him kindly!? The prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Oh, Ae'shah, The worst person is the one whom the people avoid for his bad manners.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud] How the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) used to deal with his worst enemies when he had the capabili - ties to punish them: Ae'shah (R.A.) said: A group of Jewish people came to the prophet (S.A.W.) and said: “Assaam (Death) be upon you.” the Prophet replied [quietly], “Upon you.” And I understood it, so I said, “Upon you is Assam (death), curse, and the wrath of Allah.” The prophet (S.A.W.) said to me: “Wait Oh Ae'shah, be nice, and keep away from violence, and bad manners, because Allah loves kindness in everything.” I said: “Did you not hear what they said?" he replied: “Did you not hear what I said? I replied to them and said: The same to you. And Allah will accept it from me and He will not accept it from them.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari] The prophet could have punished them, but instead he quietly replied to their evil comment and continued to preach kindness to everyone, even enemies. These are a few of the good manners that the Prophet used to have. We should reflect on these and study other qualities of his so that we may follow them in our lives. He is the best example that ever lived, and will ever live. The Character of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) III 2008 1429 January Thul Hijjah 1428 / Muharram ôjÉæj-ÊÉãdG ¿ƒfÉc Ωôfi /1428 áé◊GhP

(Imam Mohamed Baianonie at the Islamic Center of Raleigh, NC, delivered this Friday speech on September 9,1995)

Loving the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) is an obligation upon every Muslim. The love that is referredto here is not the emotional type of love that we may experience in relationships, but the type that leads a per-son to sacrifice anything for the sake of the prophet. In order to have this level of love, one must follow theprophet (S.A.W.) and obey him. This love is based on the belief that he is a prophet and his message is authen-tic. This true love and respect for the prophet, will lead a Muslim to do what has been ordered, much like thecompanions of the prophet did. They knew the prophet (S.A.W.) well; they loved him genuinely and were willingto sacrifice everything for his sake.

We can gain a higher level of this love by learning more about the prophet and becoming more familiarwith the types of character traits he possessed. There are several special virtues and qualities that have beengiven to the Prophet from Allah (S.W.T) in this world and in the Hereafter. We have discussed these virtues andqualities in previous speeches.

Today we will discuss in detail, the manners and morals of the prophet Muhammad, so that we mayfollow his examples in our lives.

The prophet (S.A.W.) possessed many good morals. He had the best morals that anyone has ever hador will have. The nearby and distant people, his friends and even his enemies knew him for his high morals.

In the beginning of one surah, Allah (S.W.T.) described the prophet after he swore by the pen and whatthe (angels) write: in what can be translated as, “And verily, you (O Muhammad) are on great Khuluq.” [suratAl-Qalam, (verse 4)]

Ibn Abbas (R.A.) interpreted "khuluq" by saying that the prophet has "a great deen, which is the deenof Islam." Sa'ad Bin Hisham came to Ae'shah (R.A.), the mother of the believers and said: “Tell me about themorals of the prophet (S.A.W.), she replied: “He had the morals of the Qur'an, have you not read what Allah said?“And verily, you (O Muhammad) are on great Khuluq [exalted standard of character].” [Reported by Imams AbuDawood and An-Nassai'] Imam Ibn Katheer said: “This means that every character trait in the Qur'an became atrait in his personality and his morals; whatever the Qur'an ordered him to do, he did it, and whatever the Qur'anforbade him to do, he would never do it, in addition to that, Allah (S.W.T.) created him with great morals like shy-ness, generosity, courage, forgiveness, wisdom, and every good moral and character trait.”

The most ancient Muslim scholar that compiled the prophet's morals and characteristics is Imam At-Tirmidhi (one of the hadith collectors), who died in 279 Hijri. He listed the prophet's noble features, morals andcharacters in his book “Ash-Shamaa’il Al-Muhammadiyyah” or "The Traits of Muhammad." This is a wonderfulbook; most of this speech has been taken from it.

The following are some of the manners and characteristics that I have chosen to reflect upon today:

The prophet's manner of speaking: When asked about the prophet's speaking habits, Ae'shah (R.A.) answered with the following state-

ment: “The messenger (S.A.W.) did not talk much, like anyone of you, but he used to speak very clearly and con-cisely so that every listener could memorize.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari and Muslim]

Anas Bin Malik (R.A.) said: “The messenger (S.A.W.) used to repeat a word three times so that peoplewould understand it well.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari and At-Tirmdhi]

The prophet's manner of laughing:Abdullah bin Al-Harith (R.A.) said: “The prophet's laughter was only by smiling.” [Reported by Imams

At-Tirmidhi and Ahmad] and in another version, “I have not seen anyone smile more than the prophet (S.A.W.).”And in another narration “He (S.A.W.) used to smile till his molars and his back teeth showed.” [Reported byImams At-Tirmidhi and Ahmad]

The prophet's manner in joking with his companions:Abu Hurairah (R.A.) said: “The companions asked: Oh messenger of Allah, you joke with us!? He said:

“Yes I do,, but I do not speak anything but the truth.” [Reported by Imam At-Tirmidhi] Many ahadith show thatthe prophet (S.A.W.) used to joke with his companions, men and women, the young and old, and even children.

One day, an old woman came to the prophet (S.A.W.) and said: “Oh messenger of Allah, ask Allah tomake me enter Paradise. He said: “Oh mother of so and so! Paradise is not entered by an old person.” Upon hear-ing that, she left crying. The prophet (S.A.W.) said, "Tell her that she will not enter Paradise as an old person.”Allah (S.W.T.) said what can be translated as, “Verily, We have created them (women in Paradise) of special cre-

ation. And made them virgins. Loving (their husbands), equal in age.” [surat Al-Waqi’ah, (verse 35 to 37)]

The prophet used to be humble:The prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Do not over venerate (exaggerate your reverence for me) like the

Christians over venerate the son of Mariam; I am only a slave, so say: Allah's slave and His messenger.” [Reportedby Imams Bukhari, At-Tirmdhi and Ahmad]

A woman came to the prophet (S.A.W.) and said to him: I need you for something: He said: "Sit onany road of the roads of Al-Madinah you want, and I will sit with you.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, Muslim andAt-Tirmidhi]

The prophet (S.A.W.) used to be invited for old barley bread and grease and he used to accept the invi-tation.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]

“There was no one who was loved more by the companions than the prophet (S.A.W.), and when they saw him, they did not stand up for him because they knew that he disliked it.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi]

Ae'shah (R.A.) was asked about what the prophet (S.A.W.) used to do in his house. She said: “He wasa human like any human; he cleaned his clothes, milked his cattle, and served himself.” [Reported by Imam At-Tirmidhi] And in another narration, “He used to keep himself busy by helping his family.” [Reported by ImamBukhari]

The manner in which the prophet dealt with others:On the prophet's dealings with his servants His former servant, Anas (R.A.) said: “I served the mes-

senger (S.A.W.) ten years, he never said to me "Uff". He never questioned me about why I did something. Nordid he ever ask why I did not do something. And he was morally the best person.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari,Muslim, Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]

Ae'shah (R.A.) also said: “The messenger (S.A.W.) never beat anyone with his hand except when hewent for Jihad for the sake of Allah (S.W.T.) and never did he beat a servant or a woman.” [Reported by ImamsMuslim, At-Tirmidhi, Ahmad and Abu Dawud]

On the prophet's dealings with outsiders: Ae'shah (R.A.) said: “The messenger (S.A.W.) was neitherfoul nor corrupt, nor was he loud in the market, nor did he get a bad attitude with people, instead he always for-gave.” [Reported by Imams At-Tirmidhi and Ahmad]

Ae'shah (R.A.) also said: “I have not seen the prophet (S.A.W.) try to get even with the people whooppressed him as long as that person did not commit any prohibited act. When prohibited acts were committed,he used to get angrier than anyone, and when he was given the choice between two things, he always chose theeasier as long as it was not a sin.”

Ae'shah (R.A.) also said: “The prophet (S.A.W.) used to accept gifts and he was thankful forthem.”[Reported by Imams Bukhari, Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi]

The prophet's manner in dealing with bad people:Ae'shah (R.A.) said: “A man asked the prophet (S.A.W.) to come in while I was with the prophet

(S.A.W.), so the prophet (S.A.W.) said: “He is a really bad man.” But then he let him in, and when he came in,the prophet (S.A.W.) spoke kindly and softly with him, and when he walked out, I said: “Oh, messenger of Allah! You said what you said then you spoke with him kindly!? The prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Oh, Ae'shah, The worstperson is the one whom the people avoid for his bad manners.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmidhiand Abu Dawud]

How the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) used to deal with his worst enemies when he had the capabili-ties to punish them:

Ae'shah (R.A.) said: A group of Jewish people came to the prophet (S.A.W.) and said: “Assaam (Death)be upon you.” the Prophet replied [quietly], “Upon you.” And I understood it, so I said, “Upon you is Assam(death), curse, and the wrath of Allah.” The prophet (S.A.W.) said to me: “Wait Oh Ae'shah, be nice, and keepaway from violence, and bad manners, because Allah loves kindness in everything.” I said: “Did you not hearwhat they said?" he replied: “Did you not hear what I said? I replied to them and said: The same to you. AndAllah will accept it from me and He will not accept it from them.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari] The prophet couldhave punished them, but instead he quietly replied to their evil comment and continued to preach kindness toeveryone, even enemies.

These are a few of the good manners that the Prophet used to have. We should reflect on these and study otherqualities of his so that we may follow them in our lives. He is the best example that ever lived, and will ever live.

Academic Excellence in an Islamic Environment

(Imam Mohamed Baianonie at the Islamic Center of Raleigh, NC, delivered this Friday speech on February 14, 1997)

Alhamdullah the month of Ramadan is over and we have finished fasting and praying during thatblessed month .We ask Allah (S.W.T.) to accept all our good deeds and multiply them in reward.

Now that fasting is finished, it is time to talk about yet another important pillar of Islam, whichhappens to be hajj (pilgrimage) to the sacred house of Allah in Mecca. Our deen will not be completed untilwe fulfill it.

Today, you notice here in our local community many Muslims who are physically and financiallyable to perform hajj; however, for one reason or another they have not done so yet. Allah (S.W.T.) saysin the Qura'n what can be translated as, “Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind wasthat at Bakka (Mecca), full of blessing, and guidance for Al-Alamin. In it are manifest Signs (for example),the Maqam (place) of Abraham; whosoever enters it, he attains security. And hajj to the House is a dutythe mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the way (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence);and whoever disbelieved [i.e. denies hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca), then Allah stands not in need of any ofthe Alamin (creatures).” [surat Al-Imran, (verses 96 & 97)]

There are many ahadith that tells us about virtues of hajj. Here are some examples of these:

1. Hajj is the best of deeds after Iman and Jihad. The Prophet (S.A.W.) was asked one time, which arethe best of deeds? He answered: “To believe in Allah and His messenger.” He was asked: Then what?He answered: “Then to perform jihad in the cause of Allah.” Then He was asked, what’s next? He said,“Next comes hajjon mabroor.” (Pilgrimage that is completes, pure and clear of any sins) [Reported by ImamBukhari]

2. Hajj is the best and the most beautiful type of Jihad for women, elderly and the weak. Aisha (the wifeof the prophet) asked him, O messenger of Allah, we see that jihad is the best of deeds, should we(women) perform it? He answered, “For you O women the best and most beautiful type of jihad is hajjonMabroor.” [Reported by Imam Bukhari]

The prophet (S.A.W.) also said, “Jihad for the old, the weak, and the women is hajj.” [A good hadithreported by Imam An-Nisa’i]

3. Hajj will wipe out the sins. The prophet (S.A.W.) said, “He who performs hajj and does not commit anyindecent acts and evil deeds, He will come back as clear of sins as if he had just been born.” [Reportedby Imams Bukhari & Muslim]*It is important to note that hajj will wipe out all minor sins and not the major sins. All major sins needspecial repentance to Allah.

4. The reward of hajj is Jannah (paradise). The prophet (S.A.W.) said, “From one umrah to another, thereis wiping of the sins that had been committed between the two of them, but for hajj mabroor there is noreward but Jannah (Paradise).” [Reported by Imams Bukhari & Muslim]

5. The pilgrims are the guests of Allah. In an authentic hadith the prophet (S.A.W.) said, “The pilgrimsand those who are performing umrah are the guest of Allah. If they ask Him for something, He wouldrespond, and if they ask Him for forgiveness He will forgive them.”

6. Spending during the hajj journey will be rewarded by seven hundred fold. The prophet (S.A.W.) said,“Spending in the hajj journey is like spending in the cause of Allah, each derham (dollar) is rewarded byseven hundred times.” [A good hadith reported by Imams Ahmad, Tabarani & Bayhaqi]

Those were some of the virtues of hajj. Now let’s talk about some of the things related to theperformance of the hajj.

Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime. The prophet (S.A.W.) once stood up and delivered a speechsaying, “O people, Allah has prescribed upon you hajj (pilgrimage) so perform pilgrimage.” A man said, “Isit mandatory to do it every year O messenger of Allah?” At that point the prophet remained silent, but theman insistent and asked the question three times, and then the prophet responded, “If I said yes, it willhave become mandatory, but you would not be able to bare it.” [Reported by Imams Bukhari & Muslim]

Who has to perform hajj? Hajj is an obligation on every Muslim male and female who has reachedthe age of puberty and is mentally sane and able. Allah (S.W.T.) says what can be translated as, “pilgrim-age to the house is a duty of people to Allah for those who has the means to do it.” [surat Al-Imran, (verse97)]

Now let us know talk about the means that one has to have? How is the person defined as able to per-form hajj? There are four indicators:

1. A person should be in good physical health. If he/she is unable to perform hajj for chronic illness or oldage they have to have someone to perform hajj on their behalf.

2. Route to the pilgrimage is safe so that the pilgrim will be secured over him/herself as well as their pos-sessions.

3. A person should have enough money to spend on themselves and their family while they are away onhajj. They should have enough money to spend on travel, lodging and other necessary expenses.

4. A person cannot go for hajj if he has a loan due at once, however, if he has permission from the partyof person who gave them a loan. Only then will they be allowed to go to hajj.

However, when a person has delayed payments (installments) due on their loan and the loan isnot due all at once then the case is different. The person is ONLY required to pay that month’s paymentbefore they can go for the hajj journey.

For women, on in addition to the previous mentioned conditions, they should be accompanied bytheir husband or a Mahram (male family member that can never marry her Islamicly).

One might ask the question: Can hajj be postponed or does it have to be done immediately after a personhave fulfilled above conditions? There are two opinions of the scholars:

1. The first opinion states that hajj has to be performed immediately without any delays. This is the opin-ion of Imams Abu Hanifa, Malik, Ahmad, and some of the Shafe’es, they base their opinion on ahadithfrom the Prophet that talk about the urgency of making hajj. Here are two examples: the prophet (S.A.W.)said, “He who wants to perform hajj, let him perform it as soon as possible because he might get sick orhe might lose his means of transportation or some thing might come up and distract him.” Also in anoth-er hadith the prophet said, “Do not delay performing hajj, because one of you does not know when something might come up and distract him.”

2. The second opinion is that one can delay performing hajj indefinitely and they will not be sinful as longas they have performed it before death. This is the opinion of Imams Ash-Shafe’i, Ath-Thowri and Al-Awza’i. They base their opinion on specific events that happened during the Prophet’s life. In specific, theymention the Prophet himself delaying performing hajj until the tenth year of Hijrah, in which he took withhim his wives and many of the companions. Now we know that the obligation of hajj was revealed in thesixth year of Hijrah, so if it was a must to be to perform hajj immediately then the Prophet wouldn’t havedelayed it until the tenth year.

Now that we’ve heard both opinions, it is safe to say that the best thing to do is to perform hajj once wemeet all the condition for it because no one knows what obstacles might come up in future that will delaythem from performing it. It is also important to note that no one knows when they will die. If one dies anddidn’t perform hajj during their lifetime and was able to do so then they would die sinful because they failedto complete their deen by leaving out one of the pillars of Islam.

Now suppose someone dies and had not performed hajj during their lifetime. In that case, the guardianover their inheritance will have to make hajj for them of pay someone else to perform hajj for the deceasedperson. A woman once asked the prophet (S.A.W.), my mother died and has not fulfilled her nadhir, (vowto Allah) to perform hajj. Can I make hajj for her? The prophet answered, “Yes perform hajj for her, would-n’t you think that if she had a debt and had not paid it before she died wouldn’t you have paid it off forher? She said, “Yes.” The prophet (S.A.W.) said, “Pay off your debts towards Allah, because Allah is moreworthy of paying your debts too.”

Hajj is one of the Pillars of Islam
