    The following "job description" entails 12 core responsibilitiesthat all college trustees share (John W. Nason). Boardmembers:

    Appoint, support, and assess the performance of thepresident.

    Clarify the institutions mission.

    Approve long-range plans.

    Approve the educational program.

    Ensure the well-being of faculty, students, and staff. Ensure strong financial management.

    Ensure adequate financial resources.

    Preserve institutional autonomy.

    Interpret the campus to the community.

    Interpret the needs of society to the campus.

    Serve as a court of last appeal.

    Trustees should not circumvent properchannels.

    Trustees should not violate confidentiality. Trustees should not represent special interests.

    Trustees should not speak or vote for politicalpurposes.

    Trustees should not have hidden agendas. Trustees should not engage in conflicts of

    interest.

    Trustees should not engage in surprises.

    Trustees should not say or do anything that isnot in the best interest of the College andcommunity.
