Chamber Perspective

It is hard to believe it is October already, where has 2019 gone, just 3 months remaining in the year.

September was a busy month for the Chamber and the County as a whole.

September was Dorchester Goes Purple month. We kicked off the program with a concert at the Sailwinds Amphitheater and closed it out with the Purple Boat Parade on the Choptank River. Students are currently working on the Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest and hopefully we will announce the winner by the end of October.

September was busy with many Member events.

We held another Member Orientation Session that was well attended and had great sharing of information.

We teamed up with Angie Hengst, IRONMAN Race Director to offer a session to help businesses prepare for Race Week.

The Ribbon Cutting at Anahata Yoga was well attended and informative. We even had a Delegate from Baltimore join just for the event.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Dave Bromwell gave an inspiring presentation on the direction of our public schools.

The Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament had the best weather and great golfers making for a fantastic event.

A huge crowd turned out for the Business After Hours and Ribbon cutting for Bed and Biscuit, the new boarding kennel at Cabin Creek Animal Hospital.

We were also able to fit in a very productive Past President’s Meeting and 2019 Strategic Planning Session.

There was also a little event called IRONMAN Maryland. 64 Countries were represented. The 64 Country Flags were carried at the opening ceremony by select students from DCPS. The Maple Elementary Band blew the roof off the Hyatt after Darlene Holiday brought tears to everyone’s eyes with an a cappella version of the National Anthem. The US Flag flown over the US Capital in honor of Gerry Boyle was presented to Angie Hengst to be flown at Long Wharf during the race. Turns out October is not a month for resting and catching our breath.

On Saturday, October 5th we will be working with the Dorchester County International Council (DCIC) on the 2019 Crabtoberfest.

We will be at the Hurlock Fall Festival with Purple materials on October 5.

On Wednesday, October 9, Al Redmer, Maryland Insurance Commissioner will be our speaker for the October Business Lunch.

On October 17th Harvesting Hope Youth and Family Wellness will be celebrating 3 years in business.

On October 25th Minty’s Place will be hosting a BAH and Ribbon Cutting celebrating their opening.

On October 29th we will be at the Packing House to celebrate the completion of the smoke stacks renovation.

On October 30 the first Cruise Ship for the fall will be docking.

As stated on the cover, now is the time to sign up to be a Chamber Corporate Sponsor. Our ability to execute on our strategic objectives is directly related to support from our members. Corporate Sponsorships are one great way to support the Chamber. It allows you to lock in low cost advertising and to reduce your costs for Chamber events for 2020. We offer a 10-month payment plan for corporate sponsorships which allows you to lock in the lower rates and pay over the course of the year in 10 equal monthly payments. You can find Corporate Sponsorship forms on the Chamber Website: www.DorchesterChamber.org. Please take a few minutes to review the options and consider signing up to be a Corporate and/or Event Sponsor for 2020. As always, thank you for your support of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce. If you have any business-related questions or concerns, or just want to get to know us better, feel free to visit, call, or e-mail us. We will always do our best to assist you. Bill, Robin and Robin

On September 25, 2019, Cabin Creek Animal Hospital hosted a Business After Hours celebrating their new “Room and Board” addition, BED and BISCUIT, to their facility. Dr. Donna Flaggs and staff were excited to see everyone come out and show their support and love. Mayor Caroline Cline, Senator Addie Eckardt and County Councilman Lenny Pfeffer gave words of encouragement and praises to Dr. Flaggs. Goodies, treats and tours were giving to those in attendance. You can reach them at 8 Cambridge Avenue, East New Market, MD, call 410-943-8387 or visit their website at www.cabincreekanimalhospital.com.

On September 24th we held our Annual Past Presidents Meeting and then the Past Presidents joined the current Board of Directors for the 2019 Strategic Planning Session. Our Hyatt facilitator led the impressive team of local business leaders through exercises that generated close to 200 ideas on how to continue moving the Dorchester County business community forward. That list was then filtered down to 9 that we will work on to further define and create action plans for in the coming months. Key themes for the session included advocacy, workforce development, education, engaging younger members, marketing and technology. The work of defining the action plans will be done by the various Chamber Committees. One of our key objectives is to continue to increase participation of Chamber members on our committees. If you would like to serve on any of the Committees, please reach out to Bill Christopher via email at [email protected] or by phone at 410-228-3575. Or contact any Chamber Board Member.

No Matter What. . . You Matter Campaign Targets Suicide

Prevention

Suicide does not discriminate, affecting people of all genders, ages, and ethnicities. Many different factors may contribute to someone making a suicide attempt, depression being one of the lead reasons. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 54.

This fall, to help create awareness about this community mental health issue, For All Seasons kicks off its 3rd Annual NO MATTER WHAT . . . YOU MATTER Suicide Prevention Campaign the week of October 4 through 12, 2019. The Campaign kicks off on Friday, October 4, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Bartlett Pear Inn at 28 South Harrison Street in Easton. The free event will include champagne, hors d’oeuvres and live music. The event is part of the First Friday stroll through the local galleries and shops in Easton and provides the opportunity to learn more about what For All Seasons is doing to help those in crisis. Local artist Josepha Price will create chalk art on Harrison Street as part of the international “Let’s chalk about mental health movement (#letschalkaboutmentalhealth),” which aims to raise awareness for suicide prevention and reduce stigma by encouraging the public to write messages of hope in chalk to let others know they are not alone.

In 2018, the campaign raised $20,000 from 21 participating Easton businesses which helped to support same-day mental health crisis appointments offered by the agency. This year, 24 Easton businesses are participating in the weeklong event, donating a portion of sales on specific dates during the campaign week, along with 26 business sponsors.

This year there are 26 business sponsors of the Suicide Prevention Campaign. Visit the website for a list of names.

For All Seasons hopes that by discussing the signs and symptoms associated with suicide that it can raise awareness about the issue in our community. Because

family and friends are often the first to recognize the warning signs of suicide, they can be critical to helping an individual find treatment with a provider who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), for every suicide, 25 suicide attempts are made. For All Seasons wants people to know that if they think a friend or family member is considering suicide, they should reach out and start a conversation. Talking openly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can save a life. The following are three steps to help people begin the conversation: 1) Ask directly - “Are you having suicidal thoughts?” – Let them know you care. 2) Stay and Listen – Let them share their thoughts and feelings. 3) Get help – Connect them with a friend, family member or a therapist at For All Seasons.

Beth Anne Langrell, Director of For All Seasons, comments, “For All Seasons hopes through this campaign to engage the community in ways that it can help with suicide prevention. This year, our campaign coincides with a new community offering by our staff – our Mental Health First Aid training. This community training prepares individuals to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis.”

Starting October 1, For All Seasons staff will provide an eight-hour training course which provides the tools for members of the community to identify when someone might be struggling with a mental health or substance use problem and connect them with the appropriate care. The training is available to churches, businesses, coaches, and civic organizations.

Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. A 5-step action plan guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support. In just 10 years, Mental Health First Aid has become a full-blown movement in the United States – more than one million people are certified Mental Health First Aides.

Throughout the year, For All Seasons brings awareness to the community about such issues as suicide, sexual assault, trauma, human trafficking, and mental health needs. To find out how to get involved with the NO MATTER WHAT . . . YOU MATTER Suicide Prevention Campaign contact Denae Spiering at 410-822-1018, email [email protected]. To request Mental Health First Aid training through the For All Seasons Center for Learning, contact Katie Pittsinger at 410-822-1018, email [email protected]. For further information about participating businesses in the Shop and Dine event, visit forallseasonsinc.org/youmatter.

For All Seasons serves Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne, and Talbot counties. For All Seasons Rape Crisis Center offers certified sexual assault victim advocates; counseling and support groups, free and confidential services in English and Spanish, support in the hospital, police department, and court, and referrals to social and legal services. For All Seasons English Hotline is 1-800-310-RAPE (7273) and Spanish Hotline is 410-829-6143.
