By Rabbi Annie Lewis
Growing up,whenever I
would come homefrom school, my mother would ask methe same question: “Did you ask anygood questions today?” One of my fa-vorite things about Judaism is thevalue we place on asking good ques-tions. My mother’s daily ritual of in-quiry led me to feel at home in theworld of Torah study. I am grateful forthe gift of Torah, forever unfolding - aninfinite web of questions and stories. Ibelieve all of our voices and storiesare part of the ongoing revelation ofwhat it means to be human.
We are entering the prime season
for questions and stories as Passovercomes closer. According to the kab-balists, the name of the holiday, Pe-sach, can be read as two words, PehSach, which mean “a speakingmouth.” The holiday invites us into di-alogue with stories, those of our an-cestors and those from our own lives. We place objects on our seder plateprecisely so that the children will askquestions. We fill our mouths withmatzah, known as lechem oni, com-monly translated as the bread ofpoverty. In a play on words, the Tal-mud teaches that matzah is calledlechem oni because “we need to(onim) answer many words over it”(Pesachim 36a). Finding our voice isan essential part of our story of libera-tion and it is through language that wefashion our identity as a free people.
On Rosh Chodesh Adar, I had the
privilege of participating in an inter-
generational gathering of GJC womenorganized by Melissa Klein, Dena Lakeand Anne Shlay. In a circle of chairs inAnne’s living room, a group of womenfrom different walks of life in our GJCcommunity shared stories of our fore-mothers and the lessons they havetaught us. I spoke about my grand-mother, Ann, my namesake, recountinghow she fought to go to college andhow she was known in her yearbook asthe Fanny Brice of the dorm. Listening toprecious memories of women from ourcommunity, I was reminded of thepower of stories to speak to the heart. Inthat circle, we experienced how storiesinvite laughter and tears and weavethreads of empathy for the mystery andmagic of human existence.
Marshall Ganz, a community organ-
izer and Professor of Public Policy atHarvard’s Kennedy School teaches thatstories tap into our search for agency inour lives and in the world. He writes,“We are all infinitely curious in learninghow to be agents of change, how to bepeople who make good choices undercircumstances that are unexpected andunknown to us.” The story we tell onPassover, our foundational story of theExodus from Egypt, gives us a glimpseinto how change happens. It offers ushope that like our ancestors, we, too, might have the courage to face the un-known, to come out of our most narrowplaces and to lead lives of dignity anddepth.
This month, as we stock up on un-
leavened products and scrub the cornersof our homes in preparation for Passover,I hope we will take some time to shareour stories with one another. At Kid-
dush, at the Co-op or over coffee, I in-vite us to discover the commonthreads and the colorful differencesthat infuse our community with life.Below are four(ish) questions for start-ing a conversation with someone youknow or someone you don’t yet knowin the GJC community.• What experiences in your life led
you to become part of the GJCcommunity?
• What is a particularly meaningfulmoment you have experienced inthe context of the GJC community?
• What are your hopes for our syna-gogue community and for our cityin the next ten years?

• What justice issues are you mostpassionate about? What storiesfrom your life move you to actionin the world around you?
In the spirit of generating new
questions, what questions are onyour mind this Pesach? I am eager toreceive your questions at [email protected]. I will compile them and sendthem out to the community to sparkstory-telling at our seder tables andin our synagogue halls.
This Peh sach season, as we
speak our truths, ask our questionsand share our stories, may we beblessed with a taste of redemption.
Connecting to what still needs to changeBy Mitch Marcus, GJC President
President’s Message
In early No-vember, soon
after the HighHolidays and Sukkot, Minyan Dor-shei Derekh invited the entire congre-gation to join it for a special Shabbatdavening and afternoon program inmemory of Stefan Presser z"l, as it hasevery year since his death in 2005.The Stefan Presser Memorial Shabbatcelebrates Stefan's passionate com-mitment to the struggle against socialinjustice; Stefan was the legal directorof the Pennsylvania ACLU for 21years and a long-time member ofGJC.
This year’s focus was “Transgender
Jews: Moving Toward the Blessing ofInclusiveness.” The afternoon pro-gram drew well over 200 people fromacross GJC, leaving standing roomonly. Our speakers were Nurit Shein, the executive director of MazzoniCenter, a health center servingPhiladelphia’s LGBT community, andour own members Rabbi DavidTeutsch, Yoel Solis and Leiah Moser.
The first two presentations framed
the larger issues. Nurit presented aprimer to the transition process frommale to female or vice versa, whileDavid showed us that the rabbis ofthe Talmud presumed that gender wasnot binary, and often presented Ha-lachic modifications for various gen-der categories.
But the heart of the presentation
was the telling of the journeys, stillongoing, of Yoel and Leiah. Thepacked room was completely silentas Yoel and Leiah each told their re-markably moving and compellingstories of identity and change. Thequestions that followed were an-swered with open, powerful re-sponses. Rather than review thesejourneys in limited space, you canfind a portrait of Yoel and his partner
Matthew is January’s Centre Call;Leiah’s presentation can be found onDorshei Derekh’s blog.
Earlier, during the morning’s D’var
Torah, Rabbi Annie Lewis raised twoquestions that continue to echo withinme during these intervening months. They are central questions for GJC.
Rabbi Lewis began with Isaac com-
ing from Be’er Lechai Ro’i, “the Wellof the Living One who sees me,”named by Hagar after God showed herwater there after Abraham sent her andIshmael into the desert. Rabbi Lewissuggests that Isaac, almost sacrificed byhis father, went to the same placeHagar did to reconnect with life at thisplace of seeing. And Rabbi Lewisasked “what can we do to make our‘community of communities’ here atGermantown Jewish Centre best re-semble Be’er Lechai Ro’i, an oasis ofseeing and being seen?”
Rabbi Lewis asked us to wrestle
with a question her teacher Merle Feldonce asked her: “Are you more con-nected with what has changed alreadyor with what still needs to change?”The context of her teacher’s questionwas the struggle within the Jewish The-ological Seminary as it began to admitLGBT students, and Rabbi Lewis’s owncommitment to struggling for changewhile a rabbinical student.
But Rabbi Lewis’s question has
power for the entire GJC community, given our proud history of being in thevanguard of change within the Conser-vative movement, on women’s rights inthe 40’s and 50’s, on support for a fullyintegrated community in the 60’s and70’s, on support for multiple prayerservices since the 70’s, and most re-cently on full integration of lesbian andgay, and most recently transgender,Jews into our community.
Again and again, we have been
challenged to move beyond the signif-
icant change already achieved aseach generation at GJC has beenchallenged to even more change bythe next. We are proud of thechanges that we embraced long be-fore they became the norm, for goodreason. But we should be evenprouder of our willingness since thefounding of GJC to embrace contin-ual growth and continual change.Remarkably, even now we remainfirmly more connected to what needsto change than what has.
Unlike many other Conservative
shuls, we continue to thrive. Core toour vitality is our commitment tochange what needs to change, witheach change laying the moral foun-dation for the next. May we continueto change, and may we continue tothrive!(For Rabbi Lewis’s D’var Torah as well asLeiah Moser’s presentation, do an inter-net search for “Rabbi Lewis Leiah trans-gender.” For the text of David Teutsch’spresentation, search for “Teutsch mishnaGJC transgender.”)

and to the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelors and a Mas-ters degree. David didn’t decide to go tomedical school until late in undergrad-uate school, so when he wasn’t admittedthe first time he applied, he decided toget a masters in human genetics. Hethen went to Temple University medicalschool, training in internal medicine andanesthesia at Temple as well.
David did a fellowship in critical care
at Massachusetts General Hospital inBoston and returned to Temple where heran the surgical intensive care unit from1983-88. From 1988 to 2011, he wasdivision chief of anesthesia at Fox Chase.Since November 2011, he has been atCooper University Hospital in Camden, where he is section chief for critical carein the department of anesthesia. (Physi-cians will appreciate these carefullyworded titles, David notes, smiling.)David has two children from his firstmarriage, Rachel, 31, who lives in Madi-son WI and Andrew, 34, who lives inManhattan.
Marcy and David met at Fox Chase in
the fall of 1991 when she was assignedto a study on a drug for breast cancer pa-tients in the intensive care unit, a studyon which David was a consultant. “Oneday there was a knock on my door andthere she was. We met over a breast can-cer study about a year after my marriagewas breaking up.” Marcy was 34. Davidwas 40. They were married in the winterof 1994. Their daughter, Emily was bornin the spring of 1997.
They settled in Wyncote and began
looking for a synagogue. They looked atGJC because of Marcy’s connection tothe Arbel Chorale, a community-basedchoral ensemble, where she has sung for29 years. Sheldon Levin, then cantor atGJC, was the conductor.
“We were synagogue shopping,”
David recalls. “GJC was not the syna-gogue model I was familiar with. We
David and Marcy Fish, membersof the Charry minyan, have
developed strong ties to the German-town Jewish Centre and have a deep appreciation for the value ofcommunity.
Raised in Woodbridge, CT, a New
Haven suburb, Marcy is the youngestin her family. Her father was an attor-ney, her mother a hospital lab techni-cian. She had three older brothers, one of whom died in 1977. She grad-uated from Duke University School ofNursing and worked for two years be-fore getting a Masters in Nursing atthe University of Alabama at Birming-ham.
After graduate school, Marcy de-
cided she wanted to be closer to Con-necticut, so she looked up and downthe Atlantic seaboard and decided onPhiladelphia, where she knew threepeople, that was three more than sheknew in Boston, New York or Wash-ington.
Her first job here in Philly was at
the Hospital of the University of Penn-sylvania. She also worked at the FoxChase Cancer Center, where she metDavid. Marcy’s last full time job wasas a nurse at the breast care center atthe now-shuttered MCP (Medical Col-lege of Pennsylvania). More recently,Marcy has worked as a nurse at CampRamah for the past eight summers. David was born in Philadelphiaand raised in Havertown. His late fa-ther, Richard, was in advertising de-sign and a well established artist. Hismother, Fran, is living at the Quadran-gle in Haverford. He has two sisters,Aimee and Suzanne. He went to pub-lic school at Haverford High School

walk in, the Friday night service is notin the sanctuary, but in a small undec-orated room. There was a man walkingaround the room talking, but no rabbiwas standing in front of the congrega-tion, so initially I was confused aboutwho was leading the service. Turnsout, the service was being led by acongregant and the person walkingaround was Leonard Gordon, nowRabbi Emeritus, who was greeting peo-ple. In three minutes,” David says em-phatically, “Rabbi Gordon’s D’varconnected with me, I was moved.”
David grew up in a Conservative
synagogue in Havertown, the Subur-ban Jewish Community Center, whichclosed its doors several years ago.Marcy’s background was similar.Marcy’s family belonged to a conser-vative synagogue and she attendedUnited Synagogue Youth and CampRamah. “She could speak Hebrew andI couldn’t,” David says.
They joined GJC in 1994. Their
connection to Rabbi Gordon is filledwith affection. “We say that he’s veryconnected to Emily because doingEmily’s naming was one of his first life-cycle events at GJC and officiating ather bat mitzvah was his last,” Marcysays.
Asked how she became involved at
GJC, Marcy remembers helping withthe decorations for the auction in1998. It was the beginning of her con-nection to Women’s Club. Now she’sinvolved with the Purim Bash, she vol-unteers with the Little Shop and serveson the board of the Women’s Club.
Their daughter, Emily, attended
Perelman and Saligman Jewish DaySchools and is now at CheltenhamHigh School. She reads Torah on YomKippur in the Charry and regularly atCamp Ramah, and is in her fourth yearwith Rosh Hodesh, It’s a Girl’s Thing

with three other GJC girls, whose par-ticipation is partially funded byWomen’s Club. The program is oper-ated by Moving Traditions.
David’s involvement began in
2003, when he got a phone call askinghim to organize a Red Cross blooddrive at GJC. He now sends emails, postcards and makes phone calls tobring blood donors in three or fourtimes a year and appreciates help inthis from Justin Fink. He stays the en-tire time and contributes his iPodmusic mix to keep the atmospherecongenial. David is now serving hisfirst term on GJC’s Board of Directors. He’s also a member of Men’s Club, where he is a vice president and vol-unteers with their activities.
Both David and Marcy gradually
came to their involvement in GJC andnow that they are involved, they findtheir lives are intertwined with the syn-agogue. “It’s something that’s grownon me: the friendship, the inclusive-ness of the people who are here. It’snot something I necessarily recognizedat the very beginning,” David says. “Ifeel very much at home at German-town. That’s more important than any-thing else. I feel part of it. I’m verycomfortable.”
Marcy agrees and looks back to
two periods in her life when she wasn’tso connected and would have appre-ciated the community’s support. “Be-fore I was connected to the synagogueand Jewish day schools, I was put onbed rest for six weeks when I was preg-nant with Emily. And, when Emily wasa year and a half old, I was diagnosedwith breast cancer. I had a mastectomyand breast reconstruction,” she says.“My activity was restricted. I wish I’dhad the community. We were mem-bers but we weren’t well connected.Had the timing been different and hadI already been involved, help would
have been overflowing. I have regrets. Not that I could change anything, but ifthe timing were different, it would havebeen a lot easier.”
David and Marcy take different posi-
tions on what it takes to get people in-volved. “If you let yourself get involved, you find that there’s a lot more therethan you thought, but you have to get tothat point,” David reflects. “And that’s areally tough barrier to break. People’slives are so busy between kids, jobs andother communal activities. The syna-gogue isn’t a high priority for a lot ofpeople. But if you can break throughthat, and allow yourself to become in-volved, the impact is extraordinarily sat-isfying. It worked that way for me.
Outreach is so important. I run theblood drive because I was asked to.Then I got a call inviting me to benominated for the Board of Directors.I never thought of asking to be nomi-nated. If the synagogue gets people in-volved, they’ll stay with you. It’s amatter of reaching out.”
Marcy’s perspective is that the bar-
riers to involvement in synagogue lifelay more with the individual than withthe institution. “I don’t think the barri-ers are created by the synagogue,” shesays. “Each person has his or her ownpersonal barrier to break through toallow themselves to commit sometime. That’s probably the biggest thing.Show up.”

THE BUTTERFLY poem by Pavel Friedman, whilean inmate in the Terezin concentra-tion camp, 1942
The last, the very last,So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.Perhaps if the sun’s tears would sing against a white stone....
Such, such a yellowIs carried lightly ’way up high.It went away I’m sure because it wished to kiss the world good-bye.For seven weeks I’ve lived in here,Penned up inside this ghetto. But I have found what I love here. The dandelions call to meAnd the white chestnut branches inthe court.Only I never saw another butterfly.
That butterfly was the last one.Butterflies don’t live in here, in theghetto.
About Pavel Friedman: Born inPrague on Jan. 7, 1921.Deported to the Terezin Concentra-tion Camp on April 26, 1942. Died in Aushchwitz on Sept. 29,1944 On January 30, student perform-ers from the locally-based Wolfe Per-forming Arts Center (PAC) graced thebimah / stage in the Charry sanctu-ary with their interactive productionof the play “I Never Saw AnotherButterfly.” More than 15,000 chil-dren passed through the TerezinConcentration Camp (Theresienstadtconcentration camp, also referred toas Theresienstadt Ghetto) in theCzech Republic during the Holo-caust. Less than 100 of those chil-dren survived. Wolfe PerformingArts Center honors the memory ofthose children, and keeps their spirit
and story alive, with the touring pro-duction of the play. The short play provided us with a“snapshot” of the children and teensand some of their caretakers at Terezin. We learned that they studied in secret, produced a newsletter in secret, fell inlove, supported each other through thefear, loneliness, cold and continuingtransports. Beyond that story lies thepower of art to heal and transformboth the actors / artists and their audi-ence. The interactive session with theremarkable group of teen actors andactresses, one of several Wolfe PACgroups performing this play, expandedour (the audience’s) understanding ofthe story and showed us how art trans-forms both the actors and the audi-ence together. We heard how thegroup of young actors and actors, byworking together, grappled first withlearning about the Holocaust and thenwith portraying characters who, in theend, would die. We learned how thisgroup, by working together, deepenedtheir understanding of human behav-ior and related to the hope and spiritof the characters they portrayed. Theactors, many of whom are not Jewish, understood that the lessons of theHolocaust are universal, and are stillbeing written, performed and learned.
dIVrAY CHInUCH
Following the performance anddiscussion, we had the privilege oflistening to Trudy Klein Gompers, achild survivor of the Holocaust. Herfamily’s story, like so many others, was one of tragedy, hope and tri-umph. Her message to the students,in particular, was simple: you are allour witnesses. You are now thekeepers of these stories. Take the les-sons to heart, and work for peaceand understanding and tolerancewherever you are.

Shavuot Memorial Plaque dedication
Throughout the ages, Jews have re-sponded to the loss of loved ones
by committing themselves to remem-bering those who have died and to per-petuating their memories throughdevotion to the values that they helddear in life. Memory, that most insub-stantial of experiences, is in fact thething that stays with us the longest; it istruly our most lasting possession. Thecustoms of mourning – including therecitation of the kaddish prayer, the ob-servance of yahrtzeit on the yearly an-niversary of a death, and the yizkormemorial service on holidays – are allintended to help us keep the memoriesof those whom we have loved and lostalive in our hearts and in our lives.
In medieval times, people began in-scribing the names of those who haddied on the walls of their synagoguesso that they would be remembered bysucceeding generations. This custom, which grew out of the losses of the Cru-sades and other hard times for the Jew-ish people, finds its moderncounterpart in the memorial plaquesthat hang on the walls of the CharrySanctuary. The names on theseplaques, dear to so many of us, serve asa reminder of those who have come be-fore us and the many blessings they
have passed on to us. The lights be-side their names are lit on the weekof the yahrtzeit and at the yizkorme-morial service on holidays as a markof love and respect. Please consider adding the name
of a loved one to those on our me-morial plaques. We will hold a ded-ication ceremony for the newplaques on the second day ofShavuot (Thursday, May 16, 2013)when we remember the encounter ofthe people with God at Mt. Sinai.
