Literacy and Learning for Children and Teens at The Center for Literature and Theatre Launched in fall 2012, Generation Genius gathers The Center’s existing literacy and learning programs for children and teens – adding, transforming and building on past successes – and brings them under one banner.

Generation Genius’ interdisciplinary programs will encourage learning and imagination through reading and writing, storytelling, art-making, music, theater and other activities that can lead to learning and discovery in the various subject areas, such as English, math, history, geography, the sciences, the visual arts and others.

Our goal is to foster literacy within our community, rearing the next generation of engaged world citizens.

The names of some Center and Miami Book Fair programs will change to better reflect this new direction:

Paz Prize for Poetry Winner Announced

A historic and cultural landmark in Miami, the Koubek Center is swiftly becoming Miami Dade College’s locus for the exploration and celebration of the myriad cultures that thrive in in South Florida. Workshops, art exhibitions, theatre and music performances, literary readings and more will take place at the Koubek Center this year, many in partnership with other local organizations, as well as with the consulates of the many countries represented in Miami’s multicultural population. This roster of multidisciplinary events and programs is following through on the Koubek Center's mission – highlighting our community’s cultural expressions and encouraging dialogue. The Center @ Miami Dade College in partnership with The National Poetry Series established The Paz Prize for Poetry in spring 2012. The winner of the award — named in the spirit of the late Nobel Prize-winning poet Octavio Paz — is Dinapiera Di Donato. The Venezuelan native lives in New York.

Judge Victor Hernandez Cruz called the winning manuscript, Colaterales, a “text exhibiting tremendous control of language, as well as a warm eroticism mixed with history … reminiscent of Lorca."

Colaterales will be translated and published in a bilingual edition by Akashic Press. Di Donato will present the book at the 2013 Miami Book Fair.

The Paz Prize was established in partnership with the National Poetry Series to celebrate The Center’s 10th anniversary. More information can be found at www.thecenteratmdc.org.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. The Center has adopted the national organization Wounded Warrior Project during the month of The Big Read. We will collect monetary donations at various events. The Big Read: South Florida Veterans’ Oral History and Visual Art Project The Center will work with MDC students and other trained volunteers to record the life stories of South Florida veterans, sharing them on our website and through social media. In partnership with Key Art & Health Alliance, a South Florida organization, The Center will match veterans with visual artists who will interpret their story as artworks in various media. An exhibit of the works to take place in April will include oral history listening stations.

The Big Read: Young Authors’ Essay ChallengeMiami teens will write essays answering a question inspired by The Big Read official selection, The Things They Carried: “If you were leaving for war tomorrow and could only bring one personal item to carry with you, what would be the thing that you carry and why?” Selected essays will be published on The Center website. In partnership with Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, a South Florida nonprofit working to encourage reading, writing and the arts among young people.

Writing Fiction and Nonfiction: The Truth About Structure with Jacquelyn Mitchard: So you think you know your story? In a story-changing, interactive workshop, New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Mitchard uses a simple but profound exercise to reveal the truth of your story to the one who needs to understand it best – you. You'll learn a new way to think of the structure of your narrative, even in its newborn stages. You'll see how every story, in fiction or creative nonfiction, can be distilled to interlocking events. Once you've completed the template, you'll see what it means if you cannot “fit" your own idea into a structure that adapts to everything from The Maltese Falcon to To Kill a Mockingbird. You'll want to keep the outcome of this workshop above your desk, and refer to it again and again as you write.

Four-day workshop: Meets daily: Wednesday, May 8 - Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Writing Memoir with Rosecrans Baldwin: This workshop will focus on all aspects of personal memoir writing. Over the course of four days, students will learn and practice narrative techniques to add dimension and persuasive power to their memoir writing. We’ll specifically focus on how to create scenes; develop themes; establish characters; write vivid, realistic dialogue; research and use news sources; interview subjects; learn how to edit yourself; and develop structure, particularly for longer works.

A series of in-class writing exercises will assist students practice, hone and improve the majority of these techniques. All exercises will be read out loud by the author in class. Each student must submit a 10-page sample of memoir writing by April 19. Feedback on an attendee’s submission is essential to this workshop. All submissions will be workshopped in class, with verbal and written critiques from Rosecrans and the other workshop participants.

Three-day workshop: Meets daily: Wednesday, May 8 - Friday, May 10, 2 - 5 p.m.

Building The Novel with Mat Johnson: This course will analyze the structure of the novel, engaging in participants' novel-length manuscripts of fiction to identify and build on their strengths. Writers will exchange their works, share narrative strategies, and conduct the discussions vital to craft and the practice of fiction writing. Registrants should submit the first chapter of their novel by April 19.

Q&A Editorial: El mercado editorial y tú, con Teresa Mlawer: Si tu escribes en español y quieres publicar tu libro, Teresa Mlawer, líder veterana en el mercado editorial Hispano te proveerá una visión general comprensiva del mercado de editoriales en español en los Estados Unidos, España y Latino América. Ella cubrirá la diferencia entre las funciones de una pequeña y una gran editorial; como los libros son enviados y adquiridos; el papel de un agente literario y cómo uno puede adquirir representación; qué sucede cuando un libro es aceptado; y cómo, tú, el autor, participas en el mercadeo de tu libro. Teresa Mlawer también se reunirá individualmente con cada escritor que escriba en español y esté actualmente trabajando en un proyecto.
