Internships The words “business” and “internship” are nearly synonymous at Southeast. Our students have had unique and remarkable internships. From a cocoa plant in South Africa to a castle in Germany to a stint in Parliament, our students have traveled the globe for the perfect opportunity! Others chose to remain at home with Walt Disney World, the Cardinals Baseball organization, American Express, Anheuser-Busch, Boeing, Coca-Cola, Merrill Lynch, and Maritz Marketing Research, one of the largest marketing research firms in the United States. One hundred percent of our students have the opportunity to complete internships, which is a strength of our University.

Southeast is the only university in Missouri to staff an outreach office in St. Louis. This office identifies internship opportunities and gives you career help as you near graduation. Internship sponsors rate our students highly on communication, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills. Frequently, internship assignments lead to permanent employment opportunities.

Accreditation by the Network of International Business Schools recognized Southeast for “deep” internationalization of all facets of its business program. Only four institutions in the United States made this international list.

XEconomics Economics is consistently among the top 10 in demand by employers. If you study economics, you have a variety of courses from which to choose, from business forecasting to law and economics. More importantly, you have a wide range of career opportunities, ranging from budget analyst to underwriter.

Economics majors enrich their education through college credit internships, experiential learning projects and study abroad. Students have completed exciting internships at organizations such as Bank of America and Northwestern Mutual Network. You have the opportunity to conduct research with faculty and present the research at professional conferences. You also have the opportunity to publish your work in an edited journal.

Many students study economics to prepare for law school. According to one article in the Wall Street Journal, economics majors score better on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) than most other majors. During the past five years, Southeast’s students have exceeded the national LSAT average score.

XManagement Management majors develop skills to make organizations successful in our increasingly diverse and global economy. Faculty work closely with you in and out of the classroom to improve your problem-solving skills, presentation abilities, leadership and team-building skills — all areas that are vital to your success. In addition, you network with business executives, broaden your knowledge, and apply your skills in an individual internship experience.

The management curriculum consists of a critical combination of theory and practical application that makes effective use of technology. Management majors are well prepared for a wide range of careers in business, education, government and not-for-profit organizations. You can choose a career path in organizations such as banks, hotels, hospitals or service organizations, or you can become an entrepreneur and start your own business.

XAccounting Numbers. Statistics. Spreadsheets. That’s what a major in accounting used to be. Times have changed. Recent scandals like AIG and others have made accounting the hot new major! According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), accounting is the most in-demand college major.

If you’re good with numbers and a stickler for details, you might want to consider accounting as a career. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median wage for accountants and auditors was almost $60,000 annually in 2008, and the demand for accounting graduates is expected to grow by 18 percent, faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016.

Our accounting curriculum teaches the rules and procedures of financial, cost, tax and governmental accounting. In addition, you sharpen your technology skills and learn to conduct an audit.

Many states, including Missouri, require 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA exam – 26 hours beyond the 124-hour accounting program. To meet this need, Southeast offers a 33-credit-hour track in the MBA program so you can fulfill this requirement while also working toward your master’s degree. A head start on your MBA can make you valuable in the job market. Our graduates are recruited by the Big 4, regional and local CPA firms, the Missouri State Auditor’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), large companies such as Boeing, the Missouri Department of Revenue and others.

XFinance In today’s competitive market, the demand for finance graduates continues to grow. At Southeast, we offer the broadest range of finance courses to support our international accreditation; however, one of the features that makes our program stand above the others is the opportunity for students to manage a “real money” portfolio in our Portfolio Theory and Management class. Students decide how to invest money for an entire semester, and then see how they did by semester’s end. Even non-finance majors want to get into this class!

You may also have the opportunity to visit the New York Stock Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade as many students do. These real-life experiences enhance your practical understanding of career possibilities so that you can begin to see where you fit in the corporate world.

You are prepared for and may complete the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, a sign of accomplishment to your future employer.

XInternational Business

Given the importance of the international component of our curriculum, it is not surprising that international business is a program in demand. Gain competencies in business, develop workplace skills, deepen your understanding of the global aspects of business and enhance your sensitivity to other cultures.

Spend winter break in Spain, Portugal or North Africa, enjoy spring break in London or Paris, or visit Western Europe in early summer. Develop new perspectives on international commerce in fascinating countries such as Cuba, France or others around the world. Study banking in Finland and Russia. Do you get the idea?

When you graduate from the international business program, you will be prepared for employment with companies participating in global commerce—from locally owned entrepreneurial enterprises to multinational corporations.

XMarketing In a volatile economy, employers value graduates with keen marketing skills. In fact, marketing is one of the top 10 degrees in demand for 2009 according to NACE. Our marketing graduates have a sound reputation for excellence based on numerous real world, problem-solving experiences built into the curriculum. Our marketing department is recognized as one of the Midwest’s leading departments.

Much of their success, and yours, is a credit to faculty who have extensive teaching experience and are leaders in their field, as well as active in local and national organizations. Faculty can help you secure an internship that could make the difference between you and another candidate getting the job you want after graduation. In addition, our curriculum provides you with entrepreneurial skills necessary to successfully launch your own business.

The field encompasses high-paying and challenging executive positions including brand and product management, sales, advertising, public relations, purchasing, transportation and international business. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual earnings in 2008 were $80,220 for advertising and promotions managers, $108,580 for marketing managers and $97,260 for sales managers. Employment in marketing fields is expected to grow by 12 percent in the decade preceding 2016. It is a great time to study the fast-paced and exciting field of marketing and plan a career in sports marketing, pharmaceutical sales, Internet marketing or fund raising, to name a few.

XOrganizational Administration

Managers are needed in all areas of business, whether it is retail, manufacturing, finance and banking, or health care. If you major in organizational administration, you are prepared to handle any of these career fields.

Consider the multifaceted responsibilities that come with a small business. This major provides you with the skills to successfully manage and lead a small business. It also provides a comprehensive understanding of the business process—in areas such as management, marketing, the economic environment of business, the practical use of accounting and financial information, and the latest business technology. This major also is offered online.

Study Abroad Picture yourself having lunch at a café in Paris next to the Eiffel Tower, adventuring in North Africa or touring mysterious Stonehenge in Great Britain. You can earn Southeast credit while you study in locations such as Brazil, China, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Russia or Spain!

Studying abroad prepares you to live and work in our growing multicultural world. It promotes independence and improves your future job prospects.

The Harrison College of Business offers an unmatched variety of study abroad opportunities for all majors and interests. You can participate in short-term programs which vary in length from one to seven weeks and are offered during the January break, spring break and pre-summer/summer. You can earn credit for the business capstone course in less than two weeks at the International Summer School–Schmalkalden in Germany.

Varying length programs, taught in English, are offered in more than 30 overseas locations. International internships also can be arranged. Exchange programs, where students pay only Southeast tuition, are available. Southeast offers financial aid and scholarships for many of our programs.

Benefits of studying abroad include: ● A broader academic outlook

● Better communication skills

● Increased self confidence

● Improved foreign language fluency

● A clearer sense of the U.S. role in world affairs

● A stronger job résumé

● Opportunity to travel and have fun!
