Charles, an avid skiier, had broken his femur and was on his way to a French surgical hospital. “I knew it wasn’t life threatening,” Anita remembers. “But I didn’t know it would become such an adventure.” On the medical flight from France, Charles developed interal injuries, and the couple stopped to get him treatment in Reykjavik, Iceland. By the time they met Charles’s orthopaedic surgeon, Sean Hanley, at the Portland Jetport, it was clear Charles would need rehabilitation before returning home. And the Stickneys’ home is a very special place. Since the 1950s, Charles and Anita have lived in the historic 1730 parsonage of Reverend Ammi R. Cutter in Yarmouth. Charles had first seen this lovely Colonial house when he was six years old, and its white chimneys and black roof captured his boyish imagination. Anita, a Georgia native, wanted horses, and room for their growing family. The Stickneys moved in with their son Andrew, and later welcomed their daughters Anne, Alice and Beth, while restoring and renovating the house. While they claim to be only its caretakers, every room shows their fine eye for art, antiques and craftsmanship, and their love of family. It is an extraordinary house—of course Charles could not wait to come home. It would be over three months, however, before he could. “I began my treatment at Brighton Medical Center,” Charles re- calls, “but I could only stay there two weeks. I wish I had gone straight to The Cedars, where I could get seven days of therapy a week at The Sam L. Cohen Rehabilitation Center. And the new therapy area at The Cedars is really great.” When the prosthesis to mend the break Charles received in France failed, he left The Cedars for surgery at Mercy Hospital. The feeling of community was particularly important to Charles and Anita after that setback. “I think it is important to find the good in any situation,” Anita says. “Everyone at The Cedars was so positive.” “I can’t say enough about the friendliness of the personnel and the quality of care at The Cedars,” adds Charles. “[President and CEO] Kathy Callnan is so personable, and the attention to detail for patients is wonderful.” The former owner of Deering Ice Cream, Charles’s eyes twinkle as he confesses to his favor- ite thing about The Cedars—“ice cream at the nurses’s station, whenever you want it!” he laughs. Now back at home with Anita, Charles expects to return to the slopes—and to serving as an instructor for the Maine Handi- capped Skiing Program in Sunday River—next winter. news the cedars "The I in illness is isolation, and the crucial letters in wellness are we." —Unknown Our Community Approach to Wellness TAKE A DEEP BREATH. MEET OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Have an IRA? Good News for Your Gift.

IN OCTOBER The Cedars community welcomed Beth Sheppard as our new director of development. She has three decades of not-for-profi t experience in communications, program management and fundraising, and worked most recently at Bates College. Beth has raised money not only professionally but also as a volunteer for her children’s schools, her college, the Maine Music Society, and the Auburn Public Library. Beth lives in Auburn with her psy-chologist husband, the youngest of their three children, and their labradoodle.

The Development Offi ce helps The Cedars build stronger rela-tionships with donors and prospective donors, raises funds for new projects and ongoing operations, and fosters public support of our aging population. The offi ce raises money by direct mail appeals, face-to-face solicitations, a planned giving program, and

special events, and oversees the ongoing work of The Cedars Auxiliary.

“We are delighted that Beth has joined our team,” said Kathy Callnan, President and CEO. “She brings a great mix of energy, experience, and a real excitement for our mission and we look for-ward to working with her.”

Donors who are age 70-1/2 or older can again make gifts to The Cedars and other charities directly from their IRAs, without including the IRA withdrawal in their taxable income. This provision, available now through Decem-ber 31, 2011, was passed into law recently. Who benefi ts?

• Donors who do not need the income of their minimum required IRA distribution.

• Donors who have already reached their giving limits based on adjusted gross income.

• Donors whose income level causes the phase out of their exemptions.

• Donors who don’t itemize their deductions.

• Donors for whom additional income will cause more of their Social Security in-come to be taxed.

In order to qualify under this new law, you cannot take a regular distribution and then

write a check to The Cedars. You must instruct your IRA administrator to transfer funds directly from your IRA to charity.

You should also contact The Cedars directly to inform us that an IRA distribution from you is coming, or ask your IRA administrator to disclose your name to us—otherwise we may not be able to properly acknowledge your generous gift.

You may make qualifi ed distributions to charity in 2011, with a limit of $100,000 for the year.

You must be age 70-1/2 or greater at the time you transfer the funds.

You can only use IRA funds to make an outright charitable gift—not to fund any form of life-income gift such as a charitable gift annuity.
