MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

WE DID IT!Congratulations! You did it. We achieved our capital campaign goal of $5.2 million, ahead of schedule. Over the last three years, we have celebrated several milestones within this campaign: a ribbon cutting for our new Mary and Michael Ozimek Arts & Science Wing, a newly refurbished track and field facility, a new STEM lab, complete renovation of our earth science, biology, chemistry and physics labs, expanded academic programs, and the list goes on. What is equally rewarding is that we have reached our campaign goal with the support of so many parents, alumni and friends of CBA. I encourage everyone to come to the CBA campus during the upcoming school year and witness the vibrant educational environment that you helped build.

A special thanks goes to Colleen Ward, CBA’s director of institutional advancement, for all her efforts in managing this campaign. Colleen and her team have done an exemplary job connecting so many supporters to this effort, which has enhanced and strengthened our CBA community. Yes we have reached our goal, but we are not stopping here. The momentum that we built should be perpetuated into the future. Everyone here at CBA is committed to keeping CBA at the forefront of academic excellence, educating our students in a spiritual and holistic environment.

This coming October, we will celebrate the completion of this significant campaign. During the celebration, we will showcase all of the named donations and their plaques. While we celebrate our success, CBA always seeks to enhance its academic and extra-curricular offerings, and there are other projects we would like to pursue. If you want to be part of this seminal campaign, please contact Colleen Ward.

I also want to acknowledge the incredible work of Dr. James Schlegel, the faculty and administrators. Once again, CBA has an operating surplus (9th year in a row), increased enrollment, and an impressive college placement for the graduating class. Enrollment is at 550 and is the strongest

it has been since the “new campus” opened 20 years ago. CBA is the only established private school that increased its enrollment year over year for the past five years.

I am extremely proud of all that has been accomplished by CBA this school year. My request for every parent, alumni and friend of CBA is that we never rest on the accomplishments we have achieved, but be part of the continuing journey of CBA on its path of excellence.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

Faithfully yours,

Chris Scaringe ’82 Chairman of the Board

THE CBA COMMUNITY JOINS TOGETHER TO MAKE OUR $5.2 MILLION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS!

Thanks to Mrs. Melanie Carroll and Ms. Alexis Hatch for their hard work and making these lifelong memories possible.

SPRING CABARETThe Theatre Department hosted the Second Annual Spring Cabaret on Wednesday, May 16. The evening featured a dozen Broadway hits performed as solos, duets and

ensembles. The students picked many of the songs and were excited to perform together one final time during the school year.

Graduating performers, George Franklin, Jacob Lehning, Aidan Pacifico, Colin Patricelli, and Nathan Raia, were celebrated and thanked for all they’ve added to our program.

On May 21, CBA held its annual Commissioning Ceremony. Members of the Class of 2019 were measured in seven different categories, ranging from GPA to merits and their ability to influence and train fellow classmates. This year, the top 10 went before an interview board made up of administrators, instructors and faculty, after which the board selected the commanders and assigned other positions based on their strengths and the needs of the brigade. Congratulations to Cadet Colonel Benjamin Curro (Brigade), Cadet Colonel Conor McGinn (Band), and the 2019 leaders.

OFFICERS’ COMMISSIONING STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY On May 2, 17 students were inducted into the National Honor Society, and 14 students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. Induction into this prestigious national organization is based upon student efforts and achievements in scholarship, leadership, character, service and citizenship.

JROTC LEADERSHIP AWARDSOn Monday, April 23, the JROTC department held the annual Leadership Awards Night in the Ned McGraw Gymnasium. Veteran, military, and civic organizations came together to recognize our cadets. Awards were given in leadership and academics, band, drill, color guard, and rifle team.

THE 5TH GRADE EXPLORES HISTORY IN ALBANYIn May, our 5th grade students toured the New York State Capitol Building and the Governor’s Mansion in Albany. The field trip was part of a US geography and civics unit taught by Dr. Andrade and Mrs. Leak. The boys had the opportunity to meet Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy just as the tour of the Capitol Building was about to begin. Assemblywoman Fahy graciously took time out of her schedule to stop and talk with the boys about the field trip.

CBA-SIENA COLLABORATIVE WRITING PROJECTDr. Andrade’s and Mr. Gormley’s ELA classes recently traveled to Siena College to reunite with Fr. Kenneth Paulli and their collaborative writing partners. A group of 60 undergraduate and middle school students attended a workshop conducted by Mr. Jay Jochnowitz, senior editor at the Times Union. Mr. Jochnowitz provided an overview of the editorial writing process and introduced a framework for writing effective letters to the editor. The workshop marked the third and final event of the CBA-Siena Collaborative Writing Project for the year. Dr. Andrade, Mr. Gormley, and Fr. Paulli are looking forward to assessing this year’s program and planning the next phase of the project.

MOTHER/SON COMMUNION BREAKFASTThe annual Mother/Son Communion Breakfast was hosted on Sunday, May 6. The day started with Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, followed by brunch at the Albany Capital Center. This tradition is a beautiful way for our students to thank and celebrate their moms, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and other important women in their lives. Special thanks to the Parents Association for planning this event.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM COMPETES AT SUNY POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTEFifteen middle school members of the Lego Robotics Team competed at a First Lego League qualifier tournament at SUNY Polytechnic in Albany. The theme of this year’s tournament was HydroDynamics. CBA housed two teams: the CBA Bro Bots and the CBA Brick Brothers. Both teams prepared and delivered three presentations in front of a panel of judges. Presentations included researching a problem and solution within the water cycle, robot design, and core values. First Lego League core values include discovery, inclusion, gracious professionalism, and “cooperition,” a term coined by FLL that combines cooperation and competition. In addition, the boys built and developed computer programs to make a robot that they designed and built to autonomously complete tasks for a set point value. After several months of work, both teams performed extremely well, and the CBA Brick Brothers brought home 1st place for core values! “It was a prideful moment for the team and CBA,” said Coach Dr. Andrade.

Dear CBA Family,

As we enjoy the beginning of summer after the close of another successful school year, I am pleased to report that our tradition of excellence continues. Scholarship awards continue to arrive for the Class of 2018, and as our graduates move on to study at some of the best colleges and universities in the country, our 100% college acceptance rate is extended. To date, our graduates have earned more

than $16.5 million in scholarships to study at some of the nation’s finest institutions, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Villanova, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, Loyola University, Boston College, Connecticut College, RPI, Union, Bentley, Syracuse, Fordham, Northeastern, Providence, The College of the Holy Cross, and the United States Naval Academy. For the second year in a row, our Cadet Colonel will attend Harvard, and our valedictorian will attend the University of Notre Dame.

As our graduates leave Christian Brothers Academy to take on the challenges of college, they do so well-prepared for academic success. Their futures are launched from a solid foundation – a sound educational platform of a human and Christian education in the Lasallian tradition. This foundation was fortified through our $5.2 million capital campaign, Our Defining Moment. This campaign upgraded our facilities and programs to allow our graduates the opportunity to learn in cutting-edge learning spaces: an engineering lab to provide hands-on experiences, four beautifully renovated science labs, and a music suite designed with recording studio standards. These, and the many other building and program improvements, were made possible through the generosity of this CBA family. On May 15, Founder’s Day, we hosted our first online giving day,

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

BronationDay. Alumni, family, faculty, and friends helped raise more than $107,000 in 16 hours. This fun-filled day was especially exciting because we surpassed our initial campaign goal.

At the onset of this campaign, we identified a few of our dreams to enhance the school. Now that we have achieved them, we can admit that our dreams are bigger than that. Our goal has been to be the school of choice for young men in the Capital District, and our enrollment and waiting lists show our progress. While we have grown, our vision has been to get better, not just bigger. We are blessed to have such a strong community with undying love for CBA, and we are grateful for their generous support. Our Defining Moment has been a resounding success, and we will celebrate our victory in the fall. We honor the history of CBA by ensuring its future, and we honor our alumni by continuously working to improve the experience for today’s students. I wish you a wonderful summer, and thank you for everything you do in support of Christian Brothers Academy.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

Sincerely,

Dr. James SchlegelHead of School

UNLOCK YOUR IRAWhile there have been many changes to the tax law this past year, the Charitable IRA Rollover provision has remained permanent law. Donors continue to be able to take advantage of this opportunity to support their favorite charities; have the gift count against their required minimum distribution; and not have the amount included in their income. This is especially valuable for donors who do not itemize their tax deductions as well as high net-worth individuals who lose the full value of their itemized deductions.

Here’s how it works:

1. You must be age 70½ or older on the day of the gift(s).

2. The funds must be transferred directly from your IRA to the qualified charity.

3. The gift must be an outright gift and can be used to satisfy an existing pledge or be a new gift.

4. You can make multiple gifts to charities as long as the total amount of gifts do not exceed $100,000. If your spouse has their own IRA, they can give up to $100,000.

For more information on how you can make your gift using your IRA and help continue the CBA legacy, contact Colleen Ward at (518) 452-9809 ext 113 or email [email protected].

CBA’S SAINT LASALLE SOCIETYTodd Mesick ’85TWO GENERATIONS, ONE COMMON THEME!

CBA holds a special place in my heart, as it played a critical role in my development to adulthood. The school had an incredibly positive influence on my life in my formative years, which was surpassed only by the influence of

my parents and family. Most importantly, in addition to providing a great education, CBA fostered a sense of community and belonging that is not easily replicated. As I have progressed in life, I have had the fortune to remain active in the school community in a variety of ways. Most recently, this has been through my experience as a parent with my son now attending the school in addition to two of my nephews who have graduated in recent years. During this time I have observed, first hand, the positive impact CBA has had on their development.

I know that CBA will continue to positively influence students for generations to come, as it has for me and my family (my brothers also are graduates). I wanted to do something to help ensure that the school is able to continue this legacy. That is why I have become a member of the Saint LaSalle Society.

Honorable Howard C. Nolan, Jr. ’49 MEMORIES HELP CREATE A LEGACY GIFT TO CBAMemories….Aside from my family, CBA provided the foundation to my life. That foundation was built upon the guidance from the Brothers, teachers and students who instilled in me moral character, a quality education and friendships that have lasted a lifetime. My memories are fond ones and include tough lessons about winning and losing and having the faith to rise above.

I remember entering the freshman class at CBA with 225 boys and graduating with 175 classmates. I loved the sports, I played them all, but my education was what was most important. Brother Leo, Brother Eugene and Mr. Collins all had a profound influence on my education at CBA.

It was important to my family that I have an education that included a strong faith component. This faith would carry over to my college career at Holy Cross, where I continued my development as a young man. It eventually led me to Albany Law School and three years in the United States Marines. During my senior year at law school, I would cross New Scotland Avenue to CBA as an assistant football coach to Coach Bob Forrester, one of the finest teachers and men I knew. During my career, I founded Nolan and Heller Law Firm and also began a career in public service becoming a NYS senator guided and strengthened by my pride and joy, my family.

I experienced the power of a CBA education and thought of how important it was for me and my family. I want other families to benefit from the CBA experience. That is why I am leaving a legacy gift in my will.

The Saint LaSalle Society is a community of CBA faithful who share the original ideas and vision of our founder Saint John Baptist de La Salle to provide young men with a balanced education through challenging academic and broad co-curricular programs in a safe, faith-filled environment.

When someone joins the Saint LaSalle Society by including CBA in their long-term financial and estate plans, it reaffirms Saint John’s promise to our young men about the future that with an education, it will be better, that they need to make it better, and that the legacy of an education will serve them.
