Campus Ministry

My name is Elizabeth Czenczek, and I am a first year at Elon and studying

Elementary Special Needs Education! On campus, you can find me hanging out with my friends, going to sporting events, swimming on the club swim team, and participating in Catholic Campus Ministry. I am from Richmond, Virginia, and I am very involved in my parish back home. Coming to Elon, I was looking to find more connection in my faith and a church community where I was welcomed. I began going to Mass with CCM and made it a part of my Sunday routine like it was at home. It was at Mass that I first heard about the Fall Beach Retreat. Back home, I loved going on church trips such as retreats, Diocesan youth conferences, and Steubenville trips. I was looking forward to having a weekend away from campus and meeting others in the ministry. It was on the trip that I met some of my closest friends and really had a chance to reflect on my faith. In college, I am looking to stay focused on what truly matters in my life - a strong relationship with God - and with CCM, I believe this will be very possible. On the trip, I really enjoyed the small group discussions; we were able to share about our own personal experiences in the faith and help

one another grow. I was given advice on how to balance both my religious life and school life while at college, and the thing I learned was as long as you are trying to reach out to God, He will also reach out to you. While on the trip, I met Brittany Barton, a junior and Servant Leader in CCM. Brittany has helped me have a smooth transition in college and has served as a mentor for me. It is because of her that I am applying to be a Servant Leader myself to help the CCM community grow. CCM offers an amazing family; with events such as Sunday Suppers, Liturgy on the Lawn, and the Awakening Retreat, they help bring all ages together at Elon. My faith to me is my relationship with God and my relationship with my church. I find comfort and support in my faith and rely on it to live a positive life. On Sundays, my friends and I look forward to attending the 5 p.m. Mass; walking up to the church and seeing Father Peter is the perfect way to start our week. Going into college, I was nervous I was not going to have a strong faith community, CCM has proven me wrong and has given me a new home while at Elon. I look forward to becoming more involved in the CCM community and meeting new people.

Our 30th anniversary as an official, SGA-recognized student organization

has been quite the year! Kicking off last March with our Catholic Life Summit, where we established a new and bold five-year strategic plan to reach the 1,700 Catholic students on campus, we have gone full-steam ahead in our efforts. In addition, this fall marked the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the Holland House as the Catholic Newman Center. It was 11 years ago that Justin Sposato, class of 2010 and former CCM president, met with then-university president Leo Lambert to discuss the desire and possibility of Catholic students to have their own Catholic house on campus. Only a year later, on Family Weekend 2009, that dream was made a reality and Elon dedicated the former home of presidents J. Earl Danieley and

Fred Young as the new home for Catholic Campus Ministry! To celebrate the dual anniversaries, we held events on Family Weekend and Homecoming Weekend revolving around the theme, “Home at Holland” - to commemorate how the house has served as a home for students at Elon, a place where many have found community and belonging. After the annual Family Weekend Mass this year, students, families, and friends all arrived at the Holland House to enjoy a special dinner under the starry skies. It was here that Advisory Board chair, Mandy Nelson, announced that Jim and Jayne Field, parents of daughter Julia, class of 2020, had pledged a gift of $30,000 to CCM in honor of our 30th anniversary. This gift is a tremendous first step in being able to reach the goals of our strategic plan!

Then, in November, our community welcomed back many alumni and former staff members over Homecoming Weekend, including a special guest - former campus minister (and my predecessor) Fr. Gerry Waterman! Our annual Saturday tailgate outside the football stadium was incredible, with so many friends reconnecting; even President Connie Book made an appearance! The next day, we celebrated Mass and served a special, home-cooked brunch at the Holland House for all our alumni and their families. I look forward in five years, when the goals of our strategic plan have born fruit, and imagine how many more students, families, and alumni our ministry can have an impact on! I pray and invite you to join us in our mission as we build up the Kingdom of God at Elon.

Catholic Campus Ministry at Elon University is incredibly grateful for the generous financial support we have received over the past year. We rely on our donors as our primary revenue source to fund our programs, events, supplies, and personnel. The following list recognizes all donors who made a financial gift to Catholic Campus Ministry during the Elon fiscal year from June 1, 2018 - May 31, 2019. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list. Please send any questions to T Huynh-Duc at [email protected].

What made you choose to come to Elon?I graduated from Lewis University with a degree in Pastoral Ministry, and I knew based on my campus ministry experience that I wanted to work with students and help them on their faith journeys. The past three years, I worked at a retreat center outside of Chicago, running retreats for high school students. I loved my time with the high schoolers, but I felt called to work with college students. The Elon CCM opportunity has been an answered prayer.

What are some of your favorite things?I love to run and have been a runner since freshman year of high school. Last year, I completed the Chicago marathon for the first time, raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. I love to be outside and love how close North Carolina is to both the mountains and the beach. I love finding new books to read that help me to grow into a closer relationship with Jesus.

What is your role with Elon Catholic Campus Ministry?I am the Student Engagement Coordinator, which is a new position within CCM’s five-year strategic plan. I meet primarily with first-year students and build relationships with them by learning about their journeys with Jesus Christ and helping them find community within CCM. I love hearing where they’ve come from, where they are today, and where they hope to go. Getting to know someone personally shows they are loved and cared for, and I want to be a familiar face in CCM whom students can talk to. It’s been a joy meeting students where they are at and helping them to dig deeper into their faith journeys. I am looking forward to CCM launching the Student Engagement Internship program, because there is beauty in having students share their faith journeys with each other and build their own relationships. The possibilities of peer-to-peer engagement is boundless and I can’t wait to see how many more students we can reach.

My own campus ministers from college helped me to grow in my faith journey and learn more about my gifts and talents, and I am blessed to be able to minister to the Elon students now. A quote that I reflect on often is: “choose a job that you love, and you will never ‘work’ a day in your life.” My short time at Elon so far has proven true to this quote, and I am looking forward to the upcoming semester and years that follow.
