Liturgical Ministers
Dear Friends in Christ,
1) Please remember that when school is delayed or canceled due to winter conditions, dai-
ly Mass will be canceled. On the weekends, when conditions are unsafe for you, make
smart choices about whether you should be going to Mass. There's no need to risk a car
crash or slipping and falling in the parking lot. We all have to find that balance between
not excusing ourselves too lightly, but also not being stubborn or imprudent.
2) The weekend readings tell us that God is a "lover of souls." This is one of my favorite titles or descriptions
of God and what he is like. Sometimes I think the word "soul" is a little underused or underappreciated. I
like it when a ship or a plane is said to have a certain number of "souls" on board. What a neat reminder of
our human nature! We aren't just cells and tissue. As we celebrate Halloween, we also see a cultural
reminder of the spiritual plane. In the Gospel, Jesus comes upon a lost soul, high up in a tree, in need of
saving. Zacchaeus is a figure for human nature, wounded by sin, but still looking for something or someone
who can help. In the moment when the Lord offers him the mercy of friendship, Zacchaeus is changed and
converts. God's kindness is in full effect in these scriptures; he offers us such compassionate help. How
could a "lover of souls" do anything else?
3) As of this writing, the home team in the 2019 World Series is 0-6. There has never been a Series
Champion who lost all of their home games in the series. I had been rooting for the Astros up to now, but
now I kind of want the Nationals to win so that this weird thing takes place. The longer and more boring
baseball games get, the more important it is for the sport itself to be unpredictable!
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Nick
