Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
This weekend we celebrate the annual Solemnity of
Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus
Christ! This is the feast that we celebrate every day like last
week’s fest of the Holy Trinity, but we especially hold in high
regard this second weekend after Pentecost. It’s the feast day
that celebrates something special about our Catholic faith and
our belief in the special sacramental presence of Jesus Christ
in His Body and Blood that we have been invited to consume
to have intimate union with God.
This is a great occasion to announce further reopening of
our Churches for Mass and reception of Holy Communion:
1. Starting next weekend, 6/20 and 6/21, we will return
Oakmont and Verona Churches to their regular weekend
schedule. St. Irenaeus will be Saturday at 4 PM and Sunday
at 11AM. St. Joseph will be Saturday at 5:30PM and Sunday
at 8:30AM. We will also add one Mass on Sunday at Our La-
dy of Joy at 8 AM and one Mass on Sunday at St. Januarius
at 11AM. St. John the Baptist Masses will continue as they
have for the last two weekends: Saturday 4PM and 5:30PM,
Sunday 7:30AM, 9:00AM, 10:30AM and Noon. We will contin-
ue this modified weekend Mass schedule for the last two
weekends of June.
2. We will also introduce two parking lot Distribution of Holy
Communion services for those who are vulnerable next
weekend, 6/20 and 6/21 at St. Joseph Church at 10 AM and
Our Lady of Joy Church at 11:30 AM. These services are not
a substitute for participation at Mass. They will be brief and
exclusively for those who are at risk due to age or health
condition in an effort to help those connect with their faith in
the Eucharist, while watching or listening to Mass at home
during the continued pandemic. It is not for people who are
sick with a fever or cough. Those persons should stay at
home and all Catholics are still dispensed from any
requirement to attend Mass. These Communion Services will
have a few short prayers offered and distribution will take
place at a Communion station. Anyone attending will need to
wear a mask through the parking lot, exit the car and
approach the Communion station by foot where each can
remove the face mask only to receive and return to the
car. Everyone should stay parked and present for the
concluding prayer. There will be no “drive through” Those
arriving after Communion is distributed will not be able to
receive at this time. We will continue these services each
week until further notice.
3. Starting Monday, 6/29, we will resume our regular weekday
Mass schedule at each Church.
4. Starting Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5 all weekend
Masses will return to our regular schedule:
In order to maintain as many Masses as we are offering,
we still need people to help with cleaning/sanitizing and
ushering/greeting. I’m hoping that with the opening up of
more of our churches, parishioners can support this by
volunteering to help. Anyone who is planning to attend a
Mass can sign up to volunteer to clean/sanitize, including
lectors and altar servers. Contact Joyce Doyle if you are
willing to help as a usher/greeter. Preregistration is still the
best way to sign up to attend a Mass. Several of our Masses
are full with social distancing requirements and you may not
be able to attend the Mass you choose without preregistering.
Anyone can preregister by calling the parish office or going to
our website: https://www.opvcatholic.org/mass-times. You
can also see a link on this site for a video of what it’s like to go
to Mass under the new circumstances of social distancing and
more. We made a simple adjustment to the seating process
also from last week. We will now only assign row and section.
Please fill up the row assigned to you from first in to the left,
middle (if available) and center. The ushers and greeters were
asked to be extra friendly and welcoming last weekend, but
please allow them to seat people efficiently with limited
conversation.
It was so exciting to see people in Church last weekend. I
think all of the priests were very happy to be with folks who felt
ready to attend. At most of my Masses, people applauded
after the opening rite that they were so happy to be back in
Church again. The simple joy of something we took for
granted for so long was very visible. Please take your time in
feeling safe and ready to attend Mass again. Continue to
watch our livestream, and attend Holy Communion services to
keep healthy and safe. It is slowly getting back to some kind
of normal. But we need to continue to be cautious and patient
as we celebrate our faith in the continued pandemic
conditions. Thank you all for your cooperation and patience
as we work through this together. HAPPY FEAST OF
CORPUS CHRISTI!
In Christ’s love, Father Kevin

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST
READING I DT8:2-3, 14B-16A
Moses said to the people: "Remember how for forty years now the
LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to
test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to
keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger,
and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers,
in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every
word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.
"Do not forget the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided you through the vast and
terrible desert with its saraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and
waterless ground; who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock
and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion. For he has
strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children
within you.
R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he fills
you. He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his word!

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances
to Israel. He has not done thus for any other nation; his ordinances he
has not made known to them. Alleluia.
R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
READING 2 1 COR 10:16-17
Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a
participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a
participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one,
we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. JN 6:51
I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord;
whoever eats this bread will live forever.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL JN 6:51-58
Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: "I am the living bread that came down
from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread
that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man
give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to
you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you
do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true
food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my
blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and
I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will
have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from
heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this
bread will live forever."

MERGER PREPARATION…
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of
the Body and Blood of Christ. As we count
down two weeks to the merger of our new
parish, Holy Family Parish, let us remember
that we are a Eucharistic people. The Body
and Blood of Christ that we receive in the
Eucharist is what makes us into the Body of
Christ, the Church. As the Body of Christ we
are his body in our world today, and contin-
ue his mission of bringing the good news of
God’s love to all we meet. As we share in
this Holy Communion, let us pray for our-
selves and our new parish, that we will be
one living, vibrant parish, the living Body of
Christ and Temple of his Holy Spirit.
HAND SANITIZER
We are in need of more hand sanitizer,
specifically, we need 60-70% alcohol
gel sanitizer with NO moisturizer or scents.
If you spot a good product in your shopping and can
donate it, it can be dropped off at St. Joseph or
Our Lady of Joy rectory offices.

Don’t let all of the closings
this summer stop the fun!
Register for Vacation Bible School now!
Kids will see the familiar faces they are used to seeing each
summer and hear the message that in no matter the circumstance,
“Jesus’ power pulls us through!” At home kits will be packed and
made available to include all of the crafts, saint cards, and
activities for the week.
On Fridays from July 10— August 5, kids will be able to dance to
fun music, hear bible stories, and watch other testimonial videos
from kids their own ages. Each station will be brought to life in
your own home.
The cost to register is $10/child and the deadline is June 29.
Registrations after that date will be accepted, but there may be a
delay in getting you materials.
For any questions or to register, please email [email protected].
A note about Parish Leadership: While our clergy team has already
been appointed by Bishop Zubik with Father Dalton, Father DeWitt and me as
priests, and Deacon Vannucci and Deacon Noca, I have started the process
of lay leadership selection. Every registered parishioner received a form to
nominate any parishioner in good standing to the Parish Pastoral Council.
The criteria were listed and a prayer was on the page also. Please continue
to pray and carefully discern who you might think would be a good parish
pastoral leader. This process will be a spirit-led discernment with everyone
nominated. We will not be voting. Those whose names are submitted will be
invited to an information meeting to find out more about what the leadership
would entail and how the discernment will proceed. Please submit any names
by next weekend, Sunday, June 21. Names can be submitted by email or by
form drop off or mailed to the parish office. Because the Finance Council is a
more specific skill set, I have selected those to serve on the Finance Council
and appointed them to either a 2 year or 4 year term. There are seven
finance council members, with at least one from each former parish and most
have served on finance council prior to this new parish merge. The Finance
Council, like the Pastoral Council, are advisory councils. There are never
votes or polls. They simply advise the clergy team. The Pastoral Council is
invited to work with the parishioners more, to hear what their joys and con-
cerns are and to bring those issues to the clergy. The Finance Council is only
to work with the clergy team on parish finances. While they will interact with
the Pastoral Council, Finance Council members don’t directly interact with
parishioners in their status as council members. Therefore, I don’t intend to
announce their names publicly, but it’s not a secret either. They may each
share with friends or fellow parishioners if they are serving on the Finance
Council, but it is up to them to disclose that. For both Pastoral and Finance
Councils, I will follow the Diocesan directives and any canonical regulations. I
look forward to working with our new Holy Family Parish Council members!
In Christ’s love, Father Kevin

Holy Family Parish
PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBER CRITERIA

Our parish needs Christian leadership to help make decisions about our pastoral life and growth. According to the
2010 Parish Pastoral Council Guidelines, One Body, One Mission, the pastoral council will enable us to develop
our sense of Eucharist, Evangelization, Worship, Catechesis, Formation and Stewardship.

Leaders should have the following characteristics:
Desire for spiritual growth in themselves and in the parish
Enthusiasm about the future directions of our parish
Willingness to listen, to speak honestly, and to work toward consensus
Ability to inspire and empower others and to delegate
Flexibility and openness with people and ideas

In order to be considered for the ministry of parish pastoral council leadership a parishioner must:
Be a registered member of our parish (Anyone registered in our former five parishes).
Be a fully initiated baptized Catholic.
Be a participant in the ongoing worship life of our parish, especially Sunday Eucharist.

Since this is not a Council of representatives there is no need to emphasize representation of age groups. There is
more weight given to individuals whose maturity level allows them to be secure, confident and comfortable in
dealing with consensus and conflict. This comes with experience and age.

Please list the names of parishioners whom you identify as having the gifts for Pastoral Council leadership. These
people will be contacted to inform them that they have been named and to ask them to participate in an information
session. They will have the option to remain in the selection process or not.

Thank you for your suggestions. Please pray for the selection of Pastoral Council leadership in our parish.

Come, O Holy Spirit of the living God, and show us your ways. Guide our parish discernment of those who are called to the
ministry of leadership in and through the work of the parish pastoral council. Grant us wisdom to know our gifts. Call us
to put those gifts at the service of your people. Give us zeal and holy courage to respond generously to your invitation. And
grant your grace to all in our parish faith communities as they seek to live out the mission of Jesus. We pray this in his
name, who with you and the sustaining Father is one God, forever and ever. Amen.

NOMINATION FORM FOR LEADERSHIP MINISTRY

I suggest that the following individuals be invited to consider leadership ministry through service on our new
Holy Family Parish Pastoral Council. I will continue to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during the

nations or cash donations to purchase gift cards. Since
local businesses in the Oakmont, Plum, Verona and
Penn Hills areas are struggling, we can help them by
purchasing local gift cards. Some things requested are
gift cards from hardware stores, restaurants, grocery
stores, hair and nail salons, gift shops, entertainment
venues, and car repair/maintenance shops, to name a
few. We’re hoping for an assortment of baskets with
wide appeal, from Mr. Fix-It to Family Fun to Date
Night. Baskets which any parishioner would be happy
to win and support our local businesses.
Please drop off donations by noon June 12
at either the St. Joseph office,
Mon 1PM – 4PM or Tu - Th 8AM - 4PM
or Our Lady of Joy office,
Mon-Th 8AM – 4PM, Fri 8am – Noon
Please include your contact information.
Thank you for your generosity,
together we will get through this!
