ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK 2021 REGULATIONS

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted., and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. The law of abstinence obliges those who have reached the age of 14. There is no maximum age for abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

Page 3: The Catholic Faith Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help · 2021. 2. 5. · The Catholic Faith Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Oakland, New Jersey Served by each other and

3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 21st, to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, May 30th.

*Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

Our Parish Bible Study has resumed our consideration of the Acts of the Apostles. At our last gathering we examined the Chapters Thirteen, Fourteen and Fifteen. We met in Connors Hall where proper social distancing was maintained. Our next session will be this Monday, February 8th. We will convene at 7:30 p.m. Newcomers are welcome!

Statement of Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., on the Inauguration of President

Joseph Biden January 20, 2021

On the day of his inauguration, I congratulate President Joseph R. Biden and draw inspiration from his words, “With purpose and resolve, we turn to those tasks of our time, sustained by faith, driven by conviction, and devoted to one another and the country we love with all hearts.” The people of the Archdiocese of Newark join all Americans in working together for the good of our country and world.

As the new administration assumes office today, we pray for President Biden and support his quest to unite the American people at this crucial moment in our history. We ask God for peace and unity as well as the strength and perseverance necessary to address our nation’s most urgent issues, especially the deadly pandemic. I pray that American Catholics and all people of good will may respect each other and remain engaged in a peaceful and productive dialogue with our president and his administration for the sake of the common good. May the Holy Spirit protect and guide us in our shared pilgrimage. Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us.

Religious Education News Due to CoViD Guidelines, and in keeping with mandates from the Archdiocese of Newark, our Religious Education Classes will continue to be on-line through the end of February. All chapter review answers should be submitted online using the Christ our Life website. Each family should also complete two more family activities that were included in your family folder. Response sheets for activities completed can be kept in your folder until we meet in person or until folders are collected.

Early Childhood Center News Let it snow! Our Monthly Graph in the Center is a predictive graph, where our children had to make a prediction as to how many days it would snow in January and February. Our guesses ranged from 1 to more than 20! Yikes! By creating school-wide graphs the children are developing 1:1 correspondence skills, number awareness, counting skills, and adding skills. They are also using the graph to compare and contrast amounts. Math is snow much fun!

Scripture Reflection

Matthew 1: 29 - 39

Jesus cures Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, who is sick with a fever. When it was evening, the whole town gathered at the door to her house, where Jesus cured many who were ill with various diseases or possessed by demons. He rose before dawn the next day and went off to a deserted place to pray. The apostles found Him, and Jesus said they should go into the nearby villages so He could preach to them, saying “for this purpose I have come.”

The demons mentioned in the Gospels are real. They are fallen angels who seek to bring harm and ruin to human beings. Do you trivialize their existence or acknowledge it?

What is your prayer place and time? Where is your space to be alone with the Lord?

Do you know your purpose for existing? What is God’s calling for you?

Sunday Morning December 20, 2020

Early Sunday morning before the city awakes as I drive down to our Church I am touched by the sights of the city. A woman pushing a cart of laundry navigating the snow piles and ice patches, the snow-covered cemetery crying out as a reminder of the thousands who have lost loved ones, men and women in hospital attire waiting at the bus stops on their way to hospitals and nursing facilities, an occasional railing of garland or a second or third floor window decorated with Christmas lights. At the pantry I look around thinking back on the week – a week of coordination of deliveries, surprise food donations and an army of social distancing volunteers. They came determined to meet the packing need in spite of the surprise snow! And meet the challenge they did! Saturday morning another army of dedicated volunteers braved the frigid temperatures, set up tables and food stations to distribute all the prepared foods to the steady line of people coming with their appointment slips for some Christmas help. Bags of groceries, a scrumptious bread treat, fresh produce or fresh eggs and turkeys or chickens were welcomed into overflowing carts and car trunks. To help families create a Christmas for their families there was the added surprise of ShopRite gift cards and even some other cards to various stores for yet another treat. No one left empty handed! Now Sunday morning I look around the pantry. Of course there are a few unclaimed bags. Some clients will straggle in throughout the week. I often wonder about the stories of these struggling families. It always makes me sad that even though we had planned for them they were unable to come – then stories of family deaths, hospital visits, other unexpected happenings emerge in the chaotic lives of so many of our families. Sad, yes, but overwhelmed with joy and awe at the 300+ families who received so much loving assistance. It is no small thing when the Christmas miracle happens because of the love and care of so many. I am often struck that after all that work and preparing and then distributing – all the volunteers and donors just return home to their own busy lives. I often wonder if you realize the tremendous gift that you give to others – food, gifts/gift cards – love, presence, caring hope, respect – recognition that every single person is loved and valued!! Let this be a Christmas gift to your heart – that you have shared in this great act of love and care! Christmas peace to you and all whom you love. May the New Year of 2021 usher in a year of good health and true peace for all our world. May you and your family experience the great love of God now and into this New Year! With gratitude and love! Christmas Blessings, Sister Linda Klaiss
