THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah rejoices over the light and glory that will shine upon Jerusalem. He describes how the wealth of nations will be brought to Jerusalem, and travelers will arrive bearing gifts and praising God. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul explains to the Ephesians that the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews. Through Jesus, they became members of the same body. Therefore, they would re-ceive everything God had promised the Jewish converts if they followed Christ's teachings. Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Astrologers from the east came looking for the newborn king of the Jews, which greatly disturbed King Herod. Herod wanted to kill Jesus, and asked the astrologers to return and tell him where Jesus was. The astrologers found Jesus and brought him gifts, but received a mes-sage in a dream telling them not to return to Herod.

This is January. It is a time when we reflect on the past year and look forward to the coming year. And as the New Year gets underway we celebrate also with the feast of the Epiphany. Everyone knows that the day celebrates the coming of the wise men, the kings, the magi, to the child Jesus. It is the celebration of a long and hard journey, which ends with the revelation of Truth Himself. When the magi arrive they find an ordinary house and an ordinary family - not so different from ours - and the house is blessed by their arrival, and their worship, and their gifts: the splendor of gold for a king, the luxury of frankincense for worship and the tenderness of myrrh for burial. The gifts express both hope and anxiety for the future. At the end of mass today there will be the blessing of chalk which we shall use to bless our houses. The number of the year indicates a prayer for God’s bless-ing as this year begins. The letters C M B refer to the three travelers who visited the holy house – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – but also are the initials of the Latin words “Christus mansionem benedicat.” “May Christ bless the house.” So we use the chalk to mark our front door: 20 + C + M + B + 16. As we enter a New Year let us bring all our hopes and anxieties to Him. In a way these are our gifts - Gold for hope, Myrrh for our worries, Frankincense for our prayer. We cannot foresee or predict what will happen. But we can bring our hopes and concerns before Him, and he will give us strength. May Christ bless our houses, our homes, our families, and our lives, now and forever. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Dear Parishioners, I would like to thank you for your prayers and support this past year. I pray for you every day and I wish you a Happy New Year filled with all the graces and blessings that you need in your lives. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, with whom we begin this New Year, intercede for us and help us to fulfill God’s will. THANK YOU I am grateful for our generous volunteers who beauti-fied our Church. I would also like to thank our Choir and Musicians who made our Christmas worship so prayer-ful. Thank you also for all the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors and Altar Servers who served at each Mass this Christmas season. God bless you all! Go Pats!!!
