TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An ancient title for this Sunday is Dominica in Al-bis, or Sunday in White. During the Easter Vigil, the newly baptized are invested with a white gar-ment, a sign that they have put on Christ. At one time, the garments were worn for a full week of celebration and reflection, and on this Sunday the newly baptized would appear in their robes again in their new place among the faithful for Eucharist. In later centuries, the energy of new life at Easter was largely forgotten, and this Sunday was re-named Quasimodo Sunday, or Low Sunday. In re-cent years, with the recovery of the insight that Easter is the privileged time for celebrating and renewing baptism, there is nothing Low about this Sunday. At a week’s distance, the beauty and grace of our Easter celebration is sustained by joyful al-leluias, the blessing and sprinkling of holy water, and the comfort of the Lord’s presence to us. He is risen, and he summons us together, opening up the scriptures for us, breaking the bread, filling us with new life. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

Life Week

The Respect Life office of the Archdiocese of New York has planned a week of events called Life Week to run from Divine Mercy Sunday, April 28th to May 4th. The devastation of the Reproduc-tive Health Act cannot be adequately measured. This law has awoken many. Now, New York is facing Physician Assisted Suicide. On April 9th, Governor Cuomo, for the first time, publicly ex-pressed in a radio interview his wish to sign into law Physician-Assisted Suicide. We need to work in partnership to ensure that this does not happen. Please call your legislators throughout this week using the script on the enclosed flyer that expresses your opposition to Physician Assisted Suicide. The “Alive from New York” event on Saturday, May 4th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. is expected to draw thousands to Times Square to celebrate the sanctity of human life, with live music and guest speakers. Jeanne Mancini of the National March for Life in Washington, D.C. will host the after-noon, and His Eminence Cardinal Dolan will give a video message on jumbo screens.
