Dear Brothers and Sisters, Zaccheus wants to see Jesus and is unable to due to the size of the crowd and his small stature. He is humble and clever enough to climb up the sycamore tree, which is very easy to climb. He is not
put off by doing something foolish to see the Lord. He is short, perhaps somewhat fat, and he does not hesitate to do what he can to see Jesus. Maybe the reason we cannot see God in our life is that we are not willing to risk anything, especially anything that would make us look foolish, or might make us look “too religious.” So much emphasis today is about looking good and Zaccheus shows us that a Christian does whatever he can to see the Lord. It does not matter what people say. If I need to climb a tree, then I do so. And what great fortune comes to Zaccheus, not only does he get a chance to see the son of God, he also welcomes him into his house. He was lost in all his concerns and now he is found. Zaccheus is required by the law to return the goods he stole from others, and one-fifth more. He greatly exceeds what the law requires and gives back four-fold. Zaccheus gives us a wonderful example of conversion: he gives away half his fortune, and repays four times what he stole. What a great example for us! What we do with our wealth is a good sign of where our heart is. And true repentance also calls for restitution (to give back what we stole, or borrowed), when it is possible. Let us not be afraid to do what we need to do in order to see Jesus Christ. The Fathers of the Church said that Zaccheus stood on top of his sins to see the Lord. It is a wonderful image for us. With the mercy of God our sins and mistakes no longer kill us and they can actually lead us to see Jesus Christ. As this liturgical year comes to a close in a few weeks, let us contemplate the mercy of God and experience it in the sacraments of the Church.

FOOD PANTRY Don't look now, but Thanksgiving will soon be upon us! This is a good time to remember that it is not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, that is the true measure of Thanksgiving. So as you count your blessings
and shop for your feast, why not pick up an extra item or two for our dear guests at the
Food Pantry. The following items are especially needed for the holidays:

NEW SAN DAMIANO CROSS Ken Woo, a painter who has done many icons in New
York City churches (Church of Our Savior, Park Ave and 38th St.) has agreed to do a new San Damiano Cross
for our parish. It will cost nearly $10,000 and hopefully will be done in a few months. Ken was born in
Shaghai, China and moved to the US when he was five years old. I have a book of his art work if you would like to see it. Donations to cover this work of art will be greatly appreciated. May the Lord bless you and
your family.
THE TRIUMPH ENCORE SCREENING
Sacred Heart Church in Lyndhurst, faith on film series, will present an encore screening of The
Triumph on Thursday, November 7th at 7:30 pm at the AMC theaters in Clifton, NJ. Tickets are $15
each (cash only, please) and must be purchased at Sacred Heart Church, 324 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst, NJ prior to the show. Please call 201-438-1147 for

BEREAVEMENT GROUP Has the loss of a loved one left you
depressed, fearful, anxious or lonely? Perhaps you
can find help through sharing your feelings in the
Bereavement Support Group at
the Church of Saint Mary,
Rutherford. The group meetings
are held on Thursday’s through
Thursday, November 14th from
7:30pm to 9:00 p.m. in the Parish

Youth Meeting in the Parish – Nov. 10th
The youth are invited to attend a scrutatio (a study) of a verse from the Sunday Gospel of that
week and to look up parallel texts in order to discover what God is saying to us. There will be
many catechists on hand to help the young people (12-30 years). Then there will be a time of prayer
in the church and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a wonderful meal. All is free and it
starts at 4:15 PM until 8 PM.
GIVE BACK TO GOD! As you know we need help to grow the parish
and win back younger families who left the church or never started coming. This is essential for all parishes now that fewer than twenty percent of
Catholics attend Mass. Think about it! Can you give back to the parish
one hour a month?
Below we will feature some ways to help each week.
Environmental Committee – Men and women of all ages and abilities to help us set up and take down decorations in the church (and outside),
especially at this Christmas and Easter. We need help to make floral arrangements with real or artificial flowers, and making the church more
presentable and attractive. Contact Barbara Kittle at 201-935-2239 or Joan Palmieri at 201-933-6715.
CHURCH ROOF REPAIR Since water is still coming in on the side aisles a roofing company will be starting to make those
repairs so the new plaster work is not permanently damaged and the painting can be
completed. The cost is $21,000. Please pray that our insurance company will pay for this and
the new boilers in the school.

BABY GRAND PIANO
Dear Parishioners, We are in dire need of anyone who may have (or know someone who may have) a piano or “baby grand” piano at least five feet, eight inches long
they would consider donating or offering for a minimum dollar amount to the parish. The piano
that has been in use here for many years is literally falling apart. Strings are broken, hammer felts are
worn away, the pedals are actually coming detached, and there is little effective action left on the keyboard itself. The tuner's evaluation is that
it will cost more to repair than it is now worth, and in its present state is not fit for us.
Since our organ also needs to be completely overhauled or replaced we need your help in
finding an acoustic baby grand piano, with the substantial richness and quality to support and
sustain this congregation. Age is not a factor, if it was well maintained. If the instrument is a
donation, we will memorialize it with a plaque in the name of the donor or your family, or in
memory of a loved one! If you can help us, please see me or Fr. Joe after
any Mass, email me below ASAP, or call me at the parish office ext. 311. Thank you for your
consideration and you search efforts, and your ongoing dedication and loyalty to St. Joe's!

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK
Feasibility Study Announcement
Earlier this year, the Archdiocese of Newark began
a study for a possible capital campaign to
strengthen financially our Catholic elementary
schools, Parishes, Seminarians and Priests
Retirement Endowments.
Every pastor in all 218 parishes was contacted and,
currently, interviews are taking place with laity
throughout the Archdiocese to get their advice
and counsel. Additionally, a direct mail survey is
being sent out to approximately 10,000 Catholic
households to ask for their input and suggestions.
Your vital input will enable us to formulate plans
and, together, make educated decisions as we
continue to strengthen and build the Church.
Therefore, if you receive an invitation to
participate in the feasibility study process, please
give it your serious consideration.

and cooperation in this historic project.

ST. JOSEPH’S TRADITION A very practical and helpful tradition has been to say the 3 Hail Mary’s after Mass for the following
intentions: first, for parents living or dead, second, for priests who minister the sacraments to us and third, for someone in your family who has
fallen away from the faith. We invite you to follow this tradition in your own lives as well.
ARCHDIOCESAN CLOSING OF THE “YEAR OF FAITH”
The closing of the Year of Faith commemorating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second
Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church will be observed
at a Mass offered by Archbishop Myers in the Cathedral Basilica, Newark, on Sunday, November
24, 2013, at 3 pm. Everyone is cordially invited to participate in this
extraordinary celebration!
MOVIE AND PIZZA NIGHT The Community of God’s Love, Rutherford’s
Catholic Charismatic Community, invites everyone to a movie and pizza night on Friday, November
15, at 7:30 p.m. The movie, “Lars and the Real Girl” (PG-13), is a quirky film which portrays how
the love and affirmation of a community transforms a shy loner. The event will take place
at Visitation House, 70 West Passaic Avenue, Rutherford (corner of West Passaic and Mortimer Avenues). Reservations are not required. A free

ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY Our regular monthly meeting will be held
tomorrow evening, Monday, November 4th at 7:30 pm in the cafeteria. Hostesses will be Marge
Stallone, Cookie Evans and Janet Drago. Plans will be made for our Annual Harvest Bake
sale to be held after all masses on the weekend of November 23rd and 24th.
Also our Christmas party and Installation dinner will be discussed. Please try and attend.
