Scripture: Jesus tells us today in the gospel from St. Mark, “If anyone leads astray one of these little ones, it would be better for him to be
plunged into the sea with a great millstone around his neck.” Each of us should take a deep gulp when we read this verse, especially if we
have not been teaching the truths of our faith as presented to us by the teachings of the bible and of the Church. Yes, today’s readings are not
easy to hear, but we must hear them. Sometimes what we want to hear and need to hear are not the same.
Our Lord tells us if we mislead others to sin, we will be held responsible. Let me give a few examples: swearing in front of children-- it would
be better if anyone who leads astray one of these little ones…parents who do not take their children to Mass on Sunday for whatever reason—
it would be better if anyone who leads astray one of these little ones… priests who do not honestly preach the gospel—it would be better if
anyone who leads astray one of these little ones… those who sell or give alcohol or drugs to minors-- it would be better if anyone who leads
astray one of these little ones… those who are in the pornography business or expose pornography to minors-- it would be better if anyone
who leads astray one of these little ones…priest and religious who are not faithful to their vows-- it would be better if anyone who leads astray
one of these little ones…those who profess faith yet are negative in their words and actions-- it would be better if anyone who leads astray one
of these little ones --those who wear religious jewelry that mocks the faith or whose words and actions are contrary to the gospel of Jesus
Christ-- it would be better if anyone who leads astray one of these little ones…Simply stated, we can bring others to Jesus or turn them away
from Jesus through our own words and actions. Jesus says there are consequences for both. We can lead others into sin through seduction,
encouraging them to sin, or scandal, through one’s own words and actions which might lead one to sin. Alternatively, we can lead others to
Christ by having positive attitudes, positive words and positive actions. How are you guiding others? Jesus said you’ll be held accountable.
Let’s all pray for a renewed faith in our Lord Jesus and true conversion of heart. It is ultimately through our relationship with Jesus and
opening ourselves to him that we turn from sin.
I would encourage you to say the following prayer.
Dear Lord Jesus
I love You
I trust in You
All my hope is in You
Fill my heart, my mind and my soul with Your love, peace and happiness
Help me be the person You want me to be
Help me to serve as a good example to others
Amen
Diocesan Annual Appeal: It’s that time of the year. Thank you to all who already sent their pledges in. It is my hope that all families give
to the appeal. Let’s pledge our support to the local and universal Church. Every family is encouraged to pledge. In order to make our goal,
we need you to pledge at least what you did last year (the first drive combined with what you may have given in June). Our goal is going up
about $2,500, so we need some folks to give a bit more. We need everyone to pledge something. Some folks have asked about a building
addition. We need to continue to make our appeal or the bishop will not allow us to build. Thank you for your generosity.
Involved in the parish? We have some great and exciting things happening this fall. You’ll want to take part. It will be good for the parish
community and good for your soul. Here are just a few ideas. At Mass; Reader, Usher, Eucharistic Minister, Mass Server, Greeter, Musician.
Through committees: Pastoral Council, Finance Council, Art and Environment, Buildings and Grounds, Military Committee, Sacred
Worship. Through prayer: Praying for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life, Daily Mass, Holy Hours, Eucharistic Adoration.
Men’s group, Ladies group. Teaching CCD. Helping with the prayer garden. Others? More to come…Ideally every person in the parish
would be involved in some way. Are you involved? Why not?
Want to know more about your faith? How about attending a Bible Study? We’ll be looking at the book of Revelation. Come for a part or
for the whole evening. Holy Hour is from 5:00 to 6:00. This week’s intention is for a positive spirit for all. Mass is at 6:00, followed by
supper. See the signup sheet in the gathering space, so we have enough food for everyone. Bible Study begins around 7:15 and concludes by
8:30. Want to watch the video presentation at home? See me as to how.
Welcoming: Did you make a point to say hi and smile at everyone you saw today at Mass? Someone could have been having a bad day and
your smile could have brought them just a little joy. On the other hand, a negative face or comment may make someone’s bad day worse.
Supper: Fall is here, technically. As I mentioned when I got here as pastor, I normally don’t like to eat supper alone. So far, for the most
part, I haven’t. I prefer to eat with parishioners. We can eat at the rectory, I can come to your house, or we can go out. I’m pretty booked up
through October and looking to book November and December. Give me a call or send me an email.
In Christ,
Father Jim Trempe
